Use broad, diffused light instead of a bare lamp or on-camera flash. LEGO’s shiny plastic reflects small, bright light sources, so soften the light with white fabric or a softbox, then check a test photo for hotspots and sharp shadow edges. A practical first setup is two diffused lamps in front of the model, slightly to either side.
Set up the model and background first
Choose a surface that suits the picture you want. For a clean display or listing photo, curve a large sheet of neutral poster board behind the model to create a seamless background. A tabletop or LEGO-built setting can work better when the scene is part of the story. LEGO Life’s 2023 Galactic Photo Shoot activity likewise encourages staging a creation against a folded ground and backdrop and experimenting with lights.

Light the model before adjusting the background. If the backdrop looks too dark, add or redirect light toward it rather than flooding the bricks with more light and creating new reflections. An overhead light may help even out the background, but assess the subject and backdrop separately. There is no single best background for every build: a plain sweep suits straightforward product-style images, while a contextual scene can communicate scale or atmosphere.
Soften light to reduce glare and hard shadows
LEGO bricks’ shiny plastic can produce conspicuous reflections. Brick Architect recommends placing white fabric between the light and model or using a softbox; its guide says that “diffuse lighting can greatly reduce glare and make for better-looking photos.” See Photographing LEGO. Avoid pointing a bare lamp directly at a shiny surface. Take a test frame, then move the light or model if a bright rectangular or circular reflection falls in a distracting spot.

Try two diffused lights
For a small model, start with two lamps in front, one slightly to each side. Use diffusers and move the lamps until the model is evenly readable without distracting highlights. Games Workshop’s model-photography guide recommends a similar two-lamp arrangement for miniatures. It is transferable advice rather than a LEGO-specific test, so adapt the positions to the build’s size and shape.
Read the shadow edges
Inspect the test image as well as the live setup. Crisp, sharply defined shadow edges indicate hard light; softer, less-defined edges indicate more diffused light. If you see harsh shadows, enlarge the apparent light source, diffuse it, or reposition it. Avoid on-camera flash for this goal: Games Workshop cautions that it can produce harsh, high-contrast light.

Choose a setup that fits the model and scene

Keep color consistent across photos
When using multiple lamps, choose the same type or color temperature so the two sides of the model do not take on visibly different casts. For a quick check, photograph a neutral-colored brick and see whether it still looks neutral in the image.

If you need consistent color across a batch, Brick Architect recommends using manual color settings, taking occasional frames with a neutral gray card, and synchronizing calibration across the series. This is a more involved workflow than most single photos need, but it can help keep a sequence consistent.
Keep the camera steady and choose a useful viewpoint
A tripod or another stable support can help keep a photo sharp when the exposure is slow. A timer can reduce movement from pressing the shutter. These steps address camera shake, not reflections: keep adjusting the lighting separately to control glare.

Leave a little room around the build for cropping, and choose a viewpoint that shows its shape naturally. For rectangular architecture, consider how camera angle affects the visible edges and vanishing lines. For small figures, aiming near eye level can feel natural; for a larger model, raising the viewpoint slightly may reveal more of its form.

- Take a baseline photo. Check whether the model and background are both visible, and note bright reflected spots, sharp shadows, or uneven color.
- Change one thing at a time. Diffuse or reposition a light to address glare; alter its size or direction to soften shadows. If the background is too dark, adjust its light separately.
- Check the next frame. Look at the reflection and shadow edges, not just the overall brightness. A brighter image is not necessarily a better-lit one if the highlights obscure details.
- Stabilize the camera if needed. Use a tripod or stable surface, and a timer if pressing the shutter causes movement.
