A case is optional for a foldable phone, but it can add a layer of protection to the phone’s exterior and help if you are concerned about drops. Choose one made for your exact model. What a case can—and cannot—do
A foldable-phone case is an extra layer around the phone’s exterior. Case options vary by model and design; some cover the hinge, while others leave it exposed. Added coverage may also mean more bulk. There is no controlled comparison here showing how much a case reduces damage or whether hinge-cover designs prevent hinge failure, so treat coverage as a design choice rather than a proven durability upgrade.

Samsung describes cases as protection for its foldable phones, but its separate care guidance for the flexible screen still matters. The screen protector supplied on Samsung foldables is designed for folding and unfolding and helps protect against scratches and debris. Samsung does not recommend or authorize user removal; it directs owners to an authorized service center for replacement, which may have a cost. Check the exact model and generation before buying. Foldable phones can have different dimensions and case options across generations, even within the same product family. Then compare the practical trade-offs:

- Coverage: Decide whether you want protection on the exterior panels and whether a hinge-cover design matters to you.
- Grip and bulk: Consider whether the case feels secure in hand and whether its added thickness is acceptable.
- Fit and function: Check that buttons and ports remain accessible and that the phone opens and closes normally with the case installed.
These are useful fit and preference checks, not experimentally ranked measures of protection. A case marketed for a related model may not fit yours, so confirm the precise phone name and generation in the listing.
Care for the screen and hinge even with a case
A case does not replace careful handling of the flexible display and hinge. Before closing the phone, check that fine particles such as crumbs, sand, or dirt are not on the display or in the hinge. Google gives this advice for its Pixel Fold models, and Motorola warns that dust exposure can reduce hinge life or damage the display on the Razr Fold.

Follow the screen-protector instructions for your specific device. For the original Pixel Fold, Google says not to remove the preinstalled protector or apply a third-party protector. Samsung likewise recommends authorized replacement of its foldable screen protector rather than user removal. The maker’s instructions for your model should take precedence over generic accessory advice.

Ingress ratings come from defined tests; they do not make a phone waterproof or dustproof in every circumstance. The guidance also differs by model:

Samsung’s 2023 page about the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Galaxy Z Flip3 says those models were tested for “over 200,000 folds” under certain temperature conditions and measured against Samsung’s quality standards. Samsung also says it does not guarantee that life cycle under other conditions. That older internal test is not evidence about current foldable models, drop resistance, or how effective cases are. Samsung’s durability explanation is scoped to that test.

The manufacturer care sources describe handling risks and available cases, but they do not establish how much a case reduces damage risk or repair costs. Nor do they establish that hinge-cover cases outperform other designs.
