Photograph the object, but include enough of the surrounding sky to show where it appeared. Record the time, location, direction, duration, apparent movement and brightness, and the camera or phone you used. Preserve the original files and describe any edits. A photo can document what you observed; by itself, it cannot establish an object’s identity, distance, size, speed or origin.
Before you decide what the light is
A bright or unfamiliar point in the sky may be a planet, star, satellite, aircraft, balloon, rocket, meteor, cloud or camera artifact. NASA notes that Venus, Sirius, Jupiter and Mercury are often mistaken for unusual objects, alongside rocket launches, satellites, fireballs, weather balloons, military jets and lens flare. Check ordinary explanations against the date, time, direction and duration of your sighting before calling it unidentified. NASA’s skywatching guide gives a useful starting point: NASA’s “What’s Up” skywatching guide.

“Unidentified” can accurately describe an image or an observation without implying an extraordinary origin. NASA says there is no evidence that UAP are extraterrestrial, and that limited data make scientific conclusions difficult. See its UAP frequently asked questions.
How to frame and capture the scene
Include context, not just the light
If it is safe and practical, make one broad image that includes the horizon or recognizable landmarks, then a closer image of the object. A short sequence may also preserve how the scene changed. A tight crop can make it impossible for someone else to tell where in the sky the object appeared or how it related to nearby features.

- EF Mount; Aperture Range: f/4-45; DC Autofocus Motor; 4.9' Minimum Focus Distance; 58mm Filter Thread Diameter
- 4.9-foot closest focusing distance; 32- to 8-degree diagonal angle of view
- Measures 2.8 inches in diameter and 4.8 inches long; weighs 16.8 ounces
- Improved mechanism makes zooming smoother; front part of zoom ring sports silver ring.
Use zoom cautiously. Lens choice, framing, focus and exposure all shape how a scene looks; wide-angle and telephoto views can alter perspective. Digital zoom or a very tight telephoto frame is not proof of an object’s size or distance. NASA’s general photography guidance explains these limits and warns that photographs can misrepresent scenes: NASA NPR 8621.1 Appendix B3. This is procedural photography guidance, not a specialized sky-object manual.
Keep the capture honest
- Use the camera or phone you have; the useful comparison is whether it preserves the original image, available metadata and enough context—not whether it is expensive.
- Note the device and, if known, relevant camera settings or specifications. Focus, exposure, lighting and lens choice can affect the recorded appearance.
- Do not treat a phone’s location or timestamp metadata as guaranteed: whether it is recorded depends on the device and settings. Write down the time and location separately when possible.
- If you cannot safely or clearly capture a close view, prioritize a contextual image and written notes over a dramatic but tightly framed shot.
Record the observation separately from the picture
As soon as practical, write down what you observed rather than relying on memory or file metadata alone. AARO says that time-stamping and geolocating the observer and observed object, where possible, can help compare a report with aircraft, balloon and satellite data. Its public evidence guidance also identifies cellphone GPS and timestamp metadata as potentially useful: AARO’s guide to submitting a UAP report.

- 【Unleash Your Creative Potential】Go beyond your phone's standard camera limits. This Phone macro lens and telephoto combo empowers you to explore new perspectives, from vast landscapes to intricate close-ups. It’s an ideal tool for content creators, photography enthusiasts, and fans who want to capture professional-level shots
- Date and local time, including the time zone if you know it.
- Your location, as precisely as you are comfortable recording it.
- The direction you faced, using a compass direction or a landmark as a reference.
- How long the object remained visible and the direction it seemed to move.
- Its apparent brightness and any changes you noticed.
- Whether these details come from your direct observation, the camera recording or a later interpretation.
Describe movement and direction as apparent observations unless you used a reliable reference and method to measure them. A single image usually does not provide the calibration or context needed to turn apparent motion into a speed or trajectory.
Preserve originals and disclose processing
Keep the camera’s original photo or video file, including available metadata. Make a separate copy for sharing or analysis, and identify any crop, edit, recompression or other processing. AARO advises retaining uncompressed imagery with useful camera specifications because compression can introduce artifacts.

- Get Closer To Everyday Distant Moments: Bring distant sports events, birds, boats and travel landmarks closer when your phone camera cannot reach. The 28X optical telephoto lens is designed for stable outdoor subjects approximately 49–262 ft / 15–80 m away, making everyday long-distance observation and smartphone photography more accessible.
- Wider, More Natural Telephoto View: Compared with many higher-power phone telescopes, the 28X design provides a wider field of view and makes distant subjects easier to find and frame. It is a practical choice for beginners who prefer a more natural telephoto view instead of an extremely narrow image.
- Smaller Edge Darkening—Phone Models May Vary: Designed to reduce edge darkening on many smartphones. Because camera position and sensor size vary, some newer multi-camera phones may still show slight dark edges at 1X. Center the lens over the main camera and apply a small amount of phone zoom when needed.
- Manual Focus For Clearer Distant Detail: Rotate the focus ring slowly until your subject appears sharp. At 28X magnification, even small hand movements become visible, so brace your arms or use a tripod for clearer photos and video. For moving subjects, set your position and focus before the moment begins.Tripod is recommended and sold separately.
- Universal Clip For Popular Smartphones: Works with many iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and Android main cameras. Remove thick phone cases, identify the main 1X camera, center the lens carefully and disable automatic macro or lens switching when possible. The aluminum body also works as a compact handheld monocular for travel and outdoor observation.
If the only recording is a phone video of another screen, say that it is a secondary capture. AARO notes that this can lose fidelity, resolution and visual quality, and may introduce blur or flicker artifacts. Do not present such a recording as if it were the camera’s original file. AARO’s reporting guide explains why original files and capture details matter.

A photograph can preserve visible details and help document an observation. It does not, on its own, establish what produced the light, how far away it was, how large it was, how fast it moved or where it came from. NASA’s UAP study materials emphasize that sightings often have too little usable data to support scientific conclusions: NASA’s UAP study materials.

Use language that keeps the claim within the evidence: “unidentified in this image,” “I could not identify it at the time,” or “the available photo does not establish what it is.” Avoid turning an apparent direction, brightness or shape into a confident identification or measurement. NASA’s caution is apt: “Photographs can easily misrepresent a scene and lead to false conclusions or findings about a mishap.”
