You can freeze cooked meat-free chicken pot pie and reheat it later. Get it into the fridge or freezer within two hours of cooking or serving (within one hour if the temperature is above 90°F), package it airtight, and reheat it to 165°F throughout. You can reheat it from frozen; it will take longer than reheating a thawed pie.
How to freeze leftover pot pie
- Chill or freeze it promptly. Refrigerate or freeze cooked leftovers within two hours, or within one hour when the temperature is above 90°F. If you will not eat refrigerated leftovers within 3–4 days, freeze them sooner.
- Package it well. Divide a large pie into portions if that makes it easier to cool, store, or reheat. Wrap portions tightly or use airtight freezer-safe packaging to limit drying and freezer odors.
- Keep it at 0°F or below. USDA FSIS recommends this freezer temperature. Its general leftover guidance gives 3–4 months in the freezer for best quality; food continuously kept frozen remains safe longer, although flavor and texture can decline.
For a commercial pie, check the current package label for whether it should remain frozen and how to store opened portions. Product-specific storage and heating directions can differ.

Reheat it safely
USDA FSIS says frozen casseroles and combination meals can be reheated without thawing, in an oven or microwave. Directly reheating from frozen takes longer. FSIS gives approximately one and a half times the usual cooking or reheating time as a general estimate for frozen casseroles—not a tested time or temperature setting for every pot pie.

Use package heating directions when available, then check the filling with a food thermometer. Reheat leftovers to 165°F, checking several places, including the center. A crisp or browned crust does not show that the filling has reached a safe temperature.

Oven
Follow the package directions if this is a store-bought pie. If reheating a homemade pie, use an oven-safe dish and allow extra time if it is frozen. Check the center and other areas of the filling with a thermometer rather than relying on a fixed time or the crust’s appearance.
Microwave
Cover the dish and rotate it during heating to help distribute heat. Let it stand briefly, then check several places for cold spots and confirm the filling reaches 165°F throughout. Microwave heating can be uneven, so elapsed time alone is not a reliable safety check.

Thaw first or reheat from frozen?
Either approach is suitable for leftovers: you can thaw the pie safely in the refrigerator before reheating, or reheat it directly from frozen and allow more time. If you thaw it, USDA FSIS recommends the refrigerator, cold water in leak-proof packaging, or the microwave. Do not thaw perishable food on the counter.
Food thawed in the refrigerator can be refrozen. If you thawed it in cold water, cook it before refreezing; if you thawed it in the microwave, heat it to 165°F before refreezing.

| Storage | USDA FSIS guidance for leftovers | What the time means |
|---|---|---|
| Refrigerator | 3–4 days | General refrigerated-leftover guidance; freeze sooner if you will not eat it in that window. |
| Freezer at 0°F or below | 3–4 months | Best-quality window. Food continuously frozen remains safe longer, but quality may deteriorate. |
