Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo compare iPhone finishes in photos, use the same steady light, camera position, framing and exposure for every candidate. Keep the camera’s look and the viewing screen’s color settings consistent, and optionally place a neutral gray card beside each phone. Treat the images as a controlled comparison—not a promise that a finish will look identical in person or on another screen.
Set up a fair comparison
Consistency matters more than elaborate equipment. Choose one stable lighting setup and photograph every candidate under it; changing or mixing light between shots makes the comparison less dependable. Keep the phone, distance, angle, framing and exposure as similar as possible.

For a more repeatable reference, put a neutral gray card next to each phone and make sure it receives the same light as the finish. Capture One recommends that a neutral card or chart be evenly illuminated and properly exposed when used for white-balance correction. Kodak describes its Gray Card, graded to 18% neutral gray, as a reference for color and exposure and recommends photographing it for a new lighting setup. A photography gray card is optional: it can help keep conditions comparable, but it does not define the phone’s official color or guarantee a perfect match.
Keep the camera’s color treatment consistent
Use Standard Photographic Style where available
On supported iPhone models, Photographic Styles can adjust colors in parts of an image and apply automatically. For a straightforward comparison, use Standard where it is available, or make sure the same style is used for every photo. Model availability and controls vary. Apple explains the feature in its Photographic Styles guide.
#1 Best Overall
- QUANTITY: Set of 2, Printed on SmartFlex Synthetic Paper with a matt finish coating to avoid glare
- AFFORDABLE: Professional color and gray target, at an affordable price
- PORTABLE: fit easily in your equipment bag

Do not assume the standard iPhone Camera app can use a gray card to set manual white balance. The gray-card method described by Capture One depends on the camera app or editing workflow; Apple’s cited Camera guidance does not document a built-in gray-card calibration control.
Make the viewing screen a steady reference
Settings on the device used to inspect the photos can change how colors appear. On that iPhone, turn off True Tone and Night Shift, keep brightness at a fixed level, and check that color filters or similar accessibility display changes are off.

- True Tone: Apple says it adjusts display color and intensity to match ambient light. Turning it off keeps those settings constant as ambient light changes. Apple’s display brightness and color-temperature instructions explain the setting.
- Night Shift: This shifts display colors warmer. Turn it off for the comparison; Apple documents the control in its Night Shift guide.
- Brightness: Keep it steady rather than letting the room change the screen’s apparent brightness. Apple’s iPhone brightness and color guide covers manual and automatic brightness controls.
- Accessibility color changes: Color filters can alter the appearance of photos and videos. Check the options in Apple’s display color settings guide.
Compare the images—and understand their limits
- Photograph each candidate with the same lighting, position, angle, framing and exposure.
- If you are using a gray card, place it beside the phone in the same light for each shot.
- Use the same camera style and inspect the photos on a screen with True Tone, Night Shift and color filters off and brightness held steady.
- View the images side by side. If the exact finish matters, inspect the actual device in person before buying when possible.
A photograph is still shaped by lighting, camera processing, display settings and the screen on which it is viewed. Apple reported an 87% reduction in variance of surface colors due to ambient light for its Constant Color API on the iPhone 15 family in its 2024 developer presentation. That result applies to the API test—not ordinary iPhone Camera photos—and is not a guarantee of exact color fidelity. See Apple’s WWDC24 Constant Color session.
