You can permanently install TWRP without using its flashable ZIP on some Android phones, but there is no universal command. The safe method depends on the exact model, codename, bootloader, Android firmware, and partition layout. A phone with a dedicated recovery partition may support fastboot flash recovery twrp.img; many newer A/B or recovery-in-boot devices require fastboot boot twrp.img first and then an installation option inside TWRP. Samsung devices normally use Download Mode and an Odin .tar package instead.
Use the exact instructions on your model’s official TWRP device page before writing any image. Never guess a partition because a raw image is not interchangeable with a ZIP installer.
What “permanent installation” means
Temporary boot loads TWRP into memory for one session:
fastboot boot twrp.imgThat command does not necessarily write TWRP to storage. A permanent installation writes TWRP to the partition or boot ramdisk used by recovery. A ZIP may perform that device-specific work automatically; avoiding the ZIP means you must use another method documented for your phone. Changing an image file’s extension to .zip does not create an installer.

Check compatibility before flashing anything
Start with the supported-device list and download page at twrp.me/Devices/TWRP/ and dl.twrp.me. Team Win warns that an image for a similar-looking device generally will not work interchangeably.
- Record the exact model number, regional or carrier variant, internal codename, Android version and firmware build.
- Determine whether the phone is A-only, A/B, or uses recovery in
boot,vendor_boot, or another image. - Confirm whether it uses standard fastboot, fastbootd, Samsung Download Mode, or another manufacturer tool.
- Check whether the maintainer supplies an image, ZIP, Odin
.tar, recovery-ramdisk procedure, or patched boot image. - Stop if no model-specific installation instructions exist, the bootloader is locked, or the image came from an unverified mirror.
Prepare the phone and computer
- Back up photos, files, authenticator data and anything else you cannot replace. Unlocking the bootloader commonly performs a factory reset; device instructions such as Xiaomi’s explicitly warn about the wipe risk (TWRP Xiaomi Mi A3 instructions).
- Unlock the bootloader before attempting to flash.
- Install current Android SDK Platform-Tools. On Windows, install the correct USB driver for the phone.
- Charge the phone and use a reliable data cable and USB port.
- Download the exact TWRP build from the official device page or its named maintainer.
- Save the matching stock recovery, boot and vendor_boot images—or the complete factory firmware—so you can recover from a bad flash.
- Know the hardware keys for recovery, bootloader and (where applicable) Download Mode.
Verify ADB and fastboot detection
Enable USB debugging in Android, place twrp.img in the Platform-Tools directory, and run:
adb devices
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot devices
fastboot getvar product
fastboot getvar current-slotNot every bootloader implements every getvar query. Continue only when fastboot devices lists the phone and the reported product or codename matches. Stop if the device is not detected, reports a locked state, identifies a different product, or rejects a command as unknown.
Choose the correct installation branch

Method 1: dedicated-recovery fastboot installation
Use this method only when the exact TWRP page says the phone has a conventional recovery partition and documents fastboot flashing. Team Win shows this style for supported Android One devices (fourth-generation Android One instructions; Android One instructions).

- Download the exact
twrp.imgand keep the stock images available. - Place the file in Platform-Tools; rename it only if needed to a simple name such as
twrp.img. - Boot Android with USB debugging enabled or enter bootloader mode manually.
- Run
adb reboot bootloader. - Confirm detection with
fastboot devices. - Flash only the documented partition:
fastboot flash recovery twrp.img - Reboot and immediately use the phone’s recovery key combination. Do not allow Android to boot normally first, because some stock systems restore their own recovery.
- Confirm that TWRP displays the expected version and device codename.
If fastboot reports “partition not found,” do not substitute boot, vendor_boot or another partition at random. The phone may not have a standalone recovery partition.
Method 2: A/B or recovery-in-boot devices
Many newer phones integrate recovery into boot, vendor_boot or a device-specific ramdisk. On these models, directly flashing recovery can fail, write the wrong area, or prevent Android from booting. The safer documented pattern is:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot boot twrp.imgWhen TWRP starts, use the option named by the device page, commonly one of these:
- Advanced → Flash Current TWRP
- Advanced → Install Recovery Ramdisk
- A maintainer-specific installation or “Fix Recovery Bootloop” action
Pixel 3a instructions document the temporary-boot and recovery-ramdisk approach (TWRP Pixel 3a instructions), while Motorola One Action instructions warn against treating a temporary boot as a direct flash (TWRP Motorola One Action instructions). Menu names vary by build. If those options are absent, the image may require its ZIP, an Odin package, a patched boot image, or another maintainer procedure.

After the in-recovery installation, reboot directly back into recovery to verify persistence before booting Android.
Method 3: Samsung devices with Odin
Samsung phones generally do not use standard fastboot for TWRP. When the model page supplies an Odin package, download the correct .tar, install Samsung USB drivers and Odin, then:
- Boot the phone into Download Mode.
- Connect it to the computer and load the TWRP
.tarin Odin’s AP (also called PDA on older releases) field, following the model page. - Flash the package.
- Immediately hold the recovery key combination to enter TWRP rather than allowing Android to start.
Some Samsung firmware restores stock recovery on the first Android boot; the Galaxy Alpha instructions explain this first-boot requirement (TWRP Samsung Galaxy Alpha instructions). Odin is a Samsung-specific path, not a universal Android tool.
Rooted-phone alternatives
Root can provide an additional, device-specific route through a supported TWRP app or shell, but it does not make an incompatible image safe. An older Samsung example shows:

dd if=/sdcard/twrp.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p10The block path in that example belongs only to that model. A wrong path can overwrite boot-critical data, so never copy it to another phone. The official TWRP app also requires root on supported device pages (Android One; fifth-generation Android One). Prefer the bootloader or Odin procedure documented for your model.

- The device may not expose a
recoverypartition. - The image may be written to the wrong partition or inactive slot.
- Stock Android may replace TWRP on the first normal boot.
- The image may not match the firmware, encryption implementation or touchscreen hardware.
- A bad flash can cause a bootloop or leave Android unable to start.
That is why fastboot flash recovery twrp.img is a conditional command, not a universal installation recipe.
Verify that TWRP stayed installed
- Enter recovery immediately after installation and confirm the TWRP version and codename.
- Check touch, USB connection, storage and whether
/datamounts. - Reboot to Android only after that check.
- Power off completely, enter recovery again and confirm TWRP survives a cold boot.
- Do not accept an official OTA until you understand its effect on the modified boot and recovery partitions.
Troubleshooting
Fastboot or ADB lists nothing
Reconnect the cable, install the correct Windows driver if applicable, try another USB port, and verify that the phone is actually in the intended mode. Do not flash while detection is uncertain.
TWRP boots once but is gone afterward
fastboot boot is temporary. Boot it again and use the model’s in-TWRP permanent-install option, then return directly to recovery. On some devices, stock Android replaced TWRP because it was allowed to boot first.

The phone bootloops after flashing
- Return to bootloader or Download Mode.
- Reflash the matching stock boot, recovery or vendor_boot image, or the complete factory firmware.
- Expect a data wipe if the bootloader was unlocked or the recovery process requires it.
- Recheck the exact TWRP page and firmware compatibility before trying again.
Model-specific warnings note that a mistaken direct flash may require factory-image or boot-image restoration (Motorola One Action; Google Pixel).
TWRP asks for a password or cannot decrypt data
Try the current screen-lock credential if that build supports decryption, and verify that TWRP matches the installed firmware. Firmware updates can break decryption support (Motorola One Action notes). Do not format /data merely to remove the prompt: formatting erases user data.
Touch, USB or storage does not work
Stop using that build for important operations. These failures commonly indicate an incompatible image or firmware mismatch; return to stock or locate a maintainer build explicitly supporting your firmware.
OTAs and returning to stock
Official manufacturer updates are not generally supported on a modified device with TWRP. Team Win recommends returning completely to stock before an official OTA (TWRP official OTA FAQ). Restore stock recovery and the relevant boot or vendor_boot images, remove root and other boot modifications, apply the manufacturer’s documented update, and reinstall TWRP afterward using the exact device method. The safe decision in one sentence
Use fastboot flash recovery twrp.img only when the exact model page documents a dedicated recovery partition; otherwise temporary-boot the image and follow the device-specific in-TWRP method, use Odin for Samsung, or stop until authoritative instructions identify the correct installation path.
