To pay more securely on PlayStation Store, use a payment method accepted in your account’s Store region, require authentication at checkout where the option is available, and review saved payment details, subscriptions and family spending limits. If you prefer not to keep a card on your account, a region-matched PlayStation Store gift card can fund your wallet—but wallet top-ups generally cannot be cancelled or refunded.
Choose a payment method accepted in your Store region
PlayStation Store payment options vary by country. Check the accepted-methods page for the country set on your account before adding a card or payment service; a card registered in a different region may be rejected. PlayStation recommends matching the card’s region to the Store where possible. See PlayStation’s accepted payment methods.

For the US Store, PlayStation currently lists Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover, PayPal, Venmo, Apple Pay and Cash App Pay. This list is specific to the US, not a worldwide list. US guidance says an account can save up to three credit or debit cards and one payment service. PlayStation does not publish comparative security measurements showing that one supported method is categorically safer than another.

On supported devices, enable the checkout authentication option available for your account. PlayStation calls one setting “Require Password at Checkout”; account and device options may also allow password or passkey authentication for payments. Sony’s US terms explain that this control is available on some devices, not necessarily all of them. Review the settings shown on your account rather than assuming password/passkey authentication and 2-step verification can always be enabled together: PlayStation cautions that some authentication methods may disable the checkout setting or current 2-step verification on some devices. Check PlayStation’s payment-management and checkout-password guidance.

This is especially useful on a shared console: requiring authentication can make it harder for someone who can access the console to complete a purchase. It does not replace protecting your account credentials or checking who has access to the account.
Review saved payment methods and subscriptions
A payment method entered while making a purchase is saved to the account. If you do not want a card or payment service retained, remove it in account settings or on a console. PlayStation says removing payment details on one device removes them from all linked devices. Follow PlayStation’s steps to manage payment options.

Removing a payment method does not cancel an active subscription. Recurring subscriptions may charge the default approved payment method if wallet funds are insufficient, so review subscription settings separately if you want to stop future renewals. PlayStation’s US terms describe recurring charges and wallet use.

Use a gift card or wallet balance if you do not want to save a card
An adult account can add wallet funds through an accepted payment method or a PlayStation Store gift card. A gift card is a funding option, not an account-security feature: someone with access to your account may still be able to spend its wallet balance. Buy a code that matches your account’s Store region and check the seller’s redemption and refund terms.

Wallet funds are applied first at checkout; if the balance does not cover the purchase, another accepted payment method can pay the remainder. Wallet funds are for eligible Store purchases and generally cannot be transferred or refunded. PlayStation says wallet top-ups cannot be cancelled or refunded except where required by law. For a voucher code bought outside PlayStation Store, refund requests go to the seller. Read how PlayStation wallet funding works and see its refund guidance.
Set a spending limit for a child account
A child account uses the family manager’s wallet, subject to a monthly spending limit. PlayStation says the default limit for a newly created child account is zero; the family manager can change it. Set the limit from the family manager account if a child uses the console, and choose an amount appropriate to your household. PlayStation’s payment guidance covers child spending limits.

What to do if your payment fails
- Confirm the Store country on your account and that the card or service is accepted there.
- Check the card details against your bank statement, and avoid unsupported special characters in the entry fields.
- Check PlayStation service status. If a payment failure may be temporary, PlayStation advises waiting 24 hours before trying again in some cases.
- If the problem continues, contact your bank or try another payment method accepted in your Store region.
These checks follow PlayStation’s PS Store and refund support guidance. Avoid repeatedly retrying a failed transaction before checking whether it has already appeared in your transaction history.

- Open your PlayStation Store transaction history and look for the charge and purchase date.
- Check subscription settings to see whether the amount matches a renewal.
- Ask whether a family member or another person with account access made the purchase.
- If those checks do not explain it, follow PlayStation’s official support process for unrecognized transactions.
Refund eligibility depends on the purchase type, applicable policy and jurisdiction. PlayStation’s US terms generally treat Store purchases as final except where the applicable cancellation policy allows a refund; do not assume a refund or a universal deadline. For voucher codes bought from a retailer, contact that seller about any eligible refund.
