There is no single cheapest lineup for everyone; the right mix depends on what you watch, how much advertising you tolerate, and the offers and renewal terms available to you.
Why streaming bills deserve a regular check
Streaming costs have risen, but a reported average is not a target every household needs to match. The U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation says consumers spent an average of $69 per month on streaming services in 2025, 13% more than in 2024. The committee attributes that figure to recent consumer reports, and its graphic credits Statista; it is context, not a prediction of what any one household spends. For another U.S. reference point, S&P Global Market Intelligence put the average entry-level retail price for selected subscription video services at $10.77 per month at the close of Q1 2026. That calculation excludes promotions, discounts, and bundles, so it should not be treated as a universal current subscription price. Its analysis also found average ad-free plan prices grew at a 7.7% compound annual rate from 2020 to 2026, compared with 4.6% for entry-level plans. Start with the subscriptions you already pay for
- Check every billing route. Review direct subscriptions, app-store or device billing, bundles, and services included with memberships. Look for renewal dates and charges that may not appear under the streaming service’s name.
- Mark what the household actually watches. If nobody has used a service recently, ask whether it is worth keeping until the next renewal. A subscription can be useful for a particular show, season, or sports event without needing to remain active all year.
- Keep a service only while it meets a need. Consider pausing or cancelling after a viewing window, then resubscribe if and when the content matters again. This is a budgeting strategy, not a guaranteed savings figure; the result depends on your viewing habits and the service’s terms.
- Set a reminder before renewal. Record the renewal date and the price that will apply then, especially if you signed up during a promotion. Review the bill before the next charge rather than relying on a remembered introductory rate.
Compare tiers, bundles, and upgrades by their real cost
Decide whether ad-free viewing is worth its premium
Many entry-level plans are now ad-supported, while ad-free plans have seen faster average price growth in S&P Global’s selected-service analysis. Switching to an ad-supported tier may reduce the bill, but compare the service’s current terms: the tiers may differ in advertising, features, streaming quality, downloads, or simultaneous streams. The cheapest tier is not a saving if it removes something your household values enough to pay for.

Count a bundle as a saving only against services you would otherwise buy
S&P Global identifies bundles, discounted annual plans, and one-time promotions as potential ways to save. Do the comparison against the standalone services you genuinely would keep, not against the sum of every service in a package. Include the bundle’s total price, advertising, features, renewal terms, and any promotional end date. If a bundle adds a service nobody uses, its headline discount may not lower your actual household spending.
There is no single bundle price comparison here that establishes the cheapest current option across U.S. providers. Confirm plan contents and prices with the service before enrolling; bundle terms can change.

Separate included benefits from paid upgrades
In the U.S., Amazon says Prime Video is included with Prime membership, while Prime Video Ultra is a separate upgrade. Amazon’s March 2026 announcement listed Prime at $14.99 monthly or $139 annually; Ultra at $4.99 monthly or $45.99 annually for annual Prime members. Ultra adds ad-free viewing and other features, but Amazon says some live TV and events and selected content can still contain ads. Check the actual renewal price, not just the signup offer
Prices and promotions are time-sensitive. Peacock’s official help page says monthly and annual plan prices changed effective August 18, 2026. For existing subscribers, the changed price takes effect on a billing date on or after September 17, while a promotion continues through its promotional period. The page listed monthly prices of $8.99 for Select, $12.99 for Premium, and $19.99 for Premium Plus. Could an antenna replace a subscription for local channels?
If you mainly pay to watch local broadcast stations, over-the-air reception may be an alternative. The FCC says viewers need an appropriate antenna and either a digital television or an analog television connected to a digital-to-analog converter box. Its Digital TV Reception Maps can help you check which stations may be available near an address. A map estimate is guidance, not a guarantee of reception inside a particular home: location and reception conditions matter.
An antenna does not provide cable networks or subscription libraries, so it only replaces the part of a viewing lineup that is actually broadcast over the air. Check likely local reception before buying equipment.

A quick way to decide what stays
- Keep: services used regularly or essential to a current viewing need.
- Review: ad-free tiers, annual plans, and bundles by comparing their full terms and total cost with the options you would otherwise choose.
- Pause or cancel: services with no near-term use, after checking the renewal date and any promotion or bundle consequences.
- Verify: current prices and billing terms on the provider’s official page before a change takes effect.
