Car shocks and struts have no fixed expiry mileage. KYB says replacement to restore designed performance is “usually after 50,000 miles,” but that is a manufacturer rule of thumb—not a guarantee that every vehicle needs replacement at that point. Road conditions, use, visible damage, symptoms, and an inspection matter more than the odometer alone.
How long do shocks and struts last?
There is no universal mileage or calendar lifespan for shocks and struts. KYB’s guidance is to consider replacement to restore designed performance “usually after 50,000 miles”; it is not an independent test or a mandatory service interval. Treat that figure as a prompt to assess condition, not an automatic replacement deadline. KYB’s FAQ displays a date of March 10, 2026.

Monroe recommends regular inspections rather than relying on a single mileage cutoff. The company estimates that shocks average 1,750 strokes per mile, or 21 million cycles per 12,000 miles (19,300 kilometers). That is an estimate of repeated operation, not a test establishing how long a shock will last. Monroe’s inspection guidance does not state a publication year for that estimate.
What affects shock lifespan?
Roads, potholes, and impacts
Rough roads, potholes, debris, and hard impacts increase the demands on suspension components. Repeated rough use can accelerate wear, while a severe impact may damage a shock, strut, mount, or another suspension part immediately. Monroe explains common causes of wear; KYB also advises replacing damaged shocks and struts. KYB’s replacement guidance

Vehicle load and towing
Carrying heavy loads and towing regularly put additional stress on the suspension and can shorten component life. How much depends on the vehicle, its suspension configuration, and how it is used; the sources do not establish a mileage adjustment for towing or payload. Monroe’s wear overview
Weather and contaminants
Road salt, oil, heat, and other environmental exposure can degrade seals, bushings, and related components. A vehicle in a harsh environment may need closer attention even if it has not reached a mileage guideline. Monroe’s explanation of shock and strut wear

Driving pattern and age
Shocks work repeatedly as the suspension moves, and aggressive or severe-use driving adds wear. Internal parts and bushings also deteriorate over time. Related suspension components can affect ride control, so age or a handling change should prompt assessment of the system rather than an assumption that the shock alone is at fault. Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsSigns your shocks may need inspection
These symptoms are reasons to have the suspension checked, not proof by themselves that a shock or strut has failed. Other vehicle problems can produce similar signs. Monroe’s symptom guide and KYB’s driver guidance describe signs to look for.

- The vehicle continues bouncing after a bump.
- The front end dips noticeably under braking, or the body rolls excessively in turns.
- Handling feels unstable or steering response is reduced.
- You see fluid leaking from a shock or strut, a bent rod, or a damaged mount.
- Tires show cupping or uneven wear.
When should you get them checked?
Monroe recommends an inspection annually, or when the vehicle is already in for tire, brake, or alignment service. Consider checking sooner after a damaging impact or if the vehicle sees severe use, road salt, potholes, or heavy towing. Monroe’s inspection guidance

What to do before replacing shocks or struts
- Use mileage as a checkpoint. Around 50,000 miles is KYB’s manufacturer rule of thumb for when replacement to restore designed performance is usually considered; inspect condition rather than treating the number as an expiry date.
- Arrange an inspection when symptoms or damage appear. Do not wait for a mileage threshold if the vehicle has unstable handling, a visible leak, or damage after an impact.
- Ask for the surrounding suspension to be assessed. Have the technician check mounts, bushings, tires, and related suspension components as well as the shock or strut.
- Confirm exact fitment if replacement is needed. Parts vary by vehicle year, make, model, trim, and suspension configuration; verify all of those details before choosing a replacement.
