A card advertised with zero forex markup can reduce an issuer fee, but it does not guarantee that the merchant will accept the card or successfully set up a recurring payment.
What to check before you subscribe
- Confirm the payment route. Check whether the subscription provider accepts Indian cards for international recurring charges. Do not assume that a card accepted for a one-time purchase will also work for renewals.
- Check the amount and currency at checkout. Note whether the provider will charge in U.S. dollars or display another currency, and compare that with your issuer’s conversion terms. The available evidence does not establish that a checkout conversion offer is cheaper, so do not accept one on the assumption that it will save money.
- Read your issuer’s current schedule of charges. Look for the foreign-currency transaction fee or markup and any other applicable charge. Verify the terms for your specific card; general claims about “no forex fees” may not describe every cost.
- Check recurring-payment support. Find out whether international online transactions are enabled and whether the card issuer supports registration or management of the recurring mandate for that merchant.
These are separate checks: the provider must accept and process the payment, while the issuer’s fee schedule determines the issuer charges. How the recurring-payment rules affect renewals
India’s recurring card-payment framework involves e-mandates and issuer notifications. The Reserve Bank of India’s August 21, 2019 circular brought recurring card transactions within the additional-factor-authentication framework and set out e-mandate processing. Its August 22, 2024 circular says an issuer must send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before an actual charge or debit. See the 2019 RBI circular and the 2024 RBI circular.

Those controls do not mean every foreign subscription renewal requires an OTP, nor do they mean international recurring payments are universally prohibited. Whether a particular renewal succeeds depends on how the merchant and issuer handle the payment and mandate.

What a zero-markup example does—and does not—show
Federal Bank’s Scapia product page advertises zero forex markup on international transactions and zero joining and annual fees. Its credit-card charges schedule, effective April 1, 2026, lists foreign-currency transaction charges as nil for Scapia. This is an example of how to verify a fee claim against an issuer schedule, not a guarantee of acceptance by any U.S. subscription provider or of the lowest all-in exchange cost. Eligibility and product terms can change, so check the current issuer information before applying or paying.
If an international subscription payment declines
- Confirm that international online transactions are enabled for the card.
- Check the issuer’s recurring-mandate controls or support guidance for a registration or authentication step.
- Verify that the subscription provider accepts your payment method for recurring international charges.
- Review the transaction currency and issuer fee terms before trying again.
A decline does not by itself show whether the problem is the card setting, issuer processing, mandate setup, or merchant configuration. Switching cards may help only if the replacement card and merchant can complete the required recurring-payment process.

Keep the cost comparison specific
Compare the amount and currency the merchant will charge with the issuer’s current conversion and foreign-transaction terms. A “zero markup” claim addresses the issuer’s stated markup; it does not establish that there are no other conversion costs, that the card network’s exchange rate is the lowest available, or that the merchant will accept the card. Recheck the fee schedule and payment terms when they matter, because both issuer charges and subscription billing options can change.
