Match the security notice to your exact SonicWall firewall model and installed SonicOS version, then install the fixed firmware specified for that platform. After the appliance reboots, verify the running version and confirm that management access and expected firewall traffic have returned. SonicWall’s April 29, 2026 advisory is a useful dated example, not confirmation that its listed builds are the latest fixes for every device today.
First, confirm the advisory applies to your firewall
Do not choose a firmware image from the product generation alone. Record the firewall’s product family, exact model, hardware generation, installed SonicOS version, and management access method. Compare those details with the affected products and versions in the current SonicWall security notice. If the notice does not cover your model and version, do not assume the device is affected—or that a build listed for another device will fix it.

Check SonicWall’s support portal and the security advisory for your specific product before acting. Notices can cover different product families and firmware branches: for example, the September 2026 SMA 1000 notice concerns a separate Secure Mobile Access family, while the CVE-2024-22394 notice applies specifically to Gen 7 SonicOS 7.1.1-7040. Neither should be used to infer the correct firmware for another firewall. The support portal displayed notices updated as recently as October 6, 2026.

That advisory identified three CVEs affecting Gen 6, Gen 7, and Gen 8 firewall platforms: one High-severity issue and two Medium-severity issues. The captured advisory does not provide the CVE identifiers or individual technical details. Its listed fixed firmware was:

These are values from that specific notice, not a guarantee they remain the newest applicable fixes. Check the current advisory, model eligibility, and release notes before downloading or installing firmware. SonicWall’s advisory says: “Apply the appropriate firmware update for your platform as soon as possible.”
Prepare before installing the update
- Save a configuration backup and record the currently installed firmware version. SonicWall’s administration guidance recommends backing up settings before making changes.
- Download the firmware from MySonicWall and confirm it matches the exact platform. Review its release notes and the applicable administration guide.
- Arrange a maintenance window and ensure you have a recovery path and access to the appliance if the update does not complete as expected. This is prudent operational planning, not a universal vendor requirement.
- Keep a known-good configuration backup and note the date, current version, and intended target version.
Install the platform-specific firmware
- Open the administration interface for the firewall and use the documented Firmware & Backups workflow for its installed SonicOS version. The exact labels and screens can vary by release.
- Upload the correct firmware image obtained through MySonicWall. Older SonicWall documentation describes an “Upload Firmware” action, followed by selecting the uploaded image to boot; follow the guide for your release rather than assuming the same labels apply everywhere.
- Start the firmware boot or update procedure, then allow the appliance to reboot. Avoid interrupting power or management access while the update is in progress.
Verify the firewall after reboot
- Sign in to the management interface and inspect the firmware version the appliance reports as running.
- Compare that version with the fixed build in the current advisory applicable to your exact model—not with a general “latest” label or a build listed for another generation.
- Confirm that management access is available and that expected firewall services and traffic have resumed. The cited SonicWall guidance does not define one universal post-update validation checklist for every model, so check the services and traffic that matter in your environment.
- Record the before-and-after versions, update date, and maintenance details, and retain the configuration backup for recovery.
A successful patch does not answer whether the firewall was compromised
Installing fixed firmware addresses the vulnerability according to the applicable notice; it does not, by itself, establish whether an attacker accessed the device before it was patched. The April 29, 2026 Gen 6/7/8 advisory cited here calls for a firmware update but does not provide an incident-response checklist. If the current notice reports exploitation, your organization sees signs of compromise, or the firewall behaves unexpectedly, follow the instructions in the notice for your product and contact SonicWall support.

Do not transfer incident-response directions from a notice for another product family. For example, the September 2026 SMA 1000 notice includes separate guidance to check indicators of compromise; those directions apply to SMA 1000, not automatically to SonicWall firewall platforms.
