How to Patch and Secure LMCache After a Reported Critical Vulnerability

An open user-submitted report alleges command execution through LMCache’s enabled, reachable internal API server. Check exposure, restrict access, and wait for a verified fix.

Do not assume every LMCache installation is exposed, and do not assume a fix is available. An open user-submitted issue filed October 6, 2026, reports unauthenticated remote code execution through the opt-in internal API server when it is enabled and reachable. The report is not a maintainer-confirmed advisory; it said no patched version was available when filed. First determine whether that service is running and reachable, then disable it or restrict access while you check LMCache’s official release and security channels for a verified fix. Read issue #5510.

What was reported, and what does it mean for your deployment?

The reported flaw is in the internal API server’s /run_script endpoint

In issue #5510, the reporter says a POST request to /run_script can execute uploaded Python code in-process. The report describes the endpoint passing a live FastAPI app object into a restricted-builtins sandbox, then using that object to reach unrestricted built-ins and run operating-system commands. The reporter says they observed command execution on LMCache 0.5.5. These are claims in an open issue, not findings confirmed in an LMCache security advisory; the issue also proposed a CVSS score of 9.8, which is not an official severity rating.

Exposure depends on whether the service is enabled and reachable

The reporter says the internal API server is disabled by default and, when enabled, binds to 0.0.0.0 on a port starting at 6999. A wildcard bind can make a service listen on all available network interfaces, but it does not by itself prove that the service is reachable from the public internet: routing, host and cloud firewalls, container networking, and other access controls matter. Check the actual configuration and network path for each deployment rather than treating every LMCache installation as exposed.

The report’s runtime test on 0.5.5 does not establish that every 0.5.5 deployment is vulnerable or define the affected range across all versions. It is a reason to investigate the relevant service and exposure conditions, not proof that a particular installation has been compromised.

What should operators do first?

  1. Inventory deployments and service exposure. Identify LMCache hosts, containers, package or image versions, launch arguments, environment settings, and service manifests. Check whether the internal API server and /run_script are enabled, which interface and port they use, and which networks or clients can reach them.
  2. Disable the internal API server if it is not needed. The report describes the service as opt-in. Use the deployment’s documented configuration or service-management controls to turn it off, then verify that the process is no longer listening and that clients cannot reach the endpoint. The issue does not provide a verified configuration key or command, so do not guess one.
  3. Restrict a required service to trusted operators. If the service is operationally necessary, limit network reachability at an appropriate boundary, such as the host firewall, cloud security group, cluster network policy, or a suitably configured authenticated gateway. Do not leave it reachable from untrusted networks. The report describes unauthenticated access, so network reachability is a key exposure condition.
  4. Review records for suspicious activity. Examine available internal API access logs, reverse-proxy or firewall records, and host or container process-creation records for unexpected requests, child processes, or command execution. These are prudent checks based on the behavior alleged in the report, not an official LMCache indicator-of-compromise list.
  5. If compromise is plausible, start incident response. Preserve relevant logs and deployment artifacts, follow your organization’s incident-response process, and assess what credentials, tokens, and other secrets were available to the LMCache process. The reported ability to execute commands makes process-accessible data relevant to that assessment.

How do I check whether the internal API server is enabled?

Inspect the effective deployment configuration

Check the configuration actually applied at runtime, not just a repository default or an old template. Review service launch arguments, environment variables, container or orchestration manifests, and any service-specific configuration for the internal API server and its /run_script endpoint. Compare the effective settings with your deployment documentation; the report does not establish a universal setting name or command to inspect.

Confirm the listener and network path

On the relevant host or in the relevant container or cluster, verify whether the service is listening, which address and port it uses, and whether untrusted clients can reach it through the surrounding network. A service being disabled by default, as the reporter claims, is not a substitute for checking a running deployment that may have been configured differently.

How should you patch LMCache?

The issue page said no patched version was available when #5510 was filed on October 6, 2026. The available reports do not establish a fixed release or provide official patch instructions. Check the issue’s status and LMCache’s official release and security channels for a maintainer-confirmed resolution. Before upgrading, verify that a published version and its changelog explicitly address this issue; do not label a version fixed based only on its number or assume a later version contains a remedy.

Once a fix is confirmed, follow the project’s documented upgrade procedure for your installation method. Record the current version and deployment configuration, test the upgrade in an appropriate environment, then verify the installed version and that the risky service remains disabled or access-restricted as intended. If no fix is confirmed yet, keep the service disabled where possible or maintain strict network controls and continue monitoring official project updates.

Are there other LMCache service reports to review?

Two other open user-submitted issues filed October 6, 2026, describe different services and concerns. They are separate reports, not confirmation of the /run_script issue. Include these services in your deployment inventory if they are present.

Service or issue What the reporter says Operator check
Multiprocess HTTP server, issue #5511 The reporter alleges unauthenticated cache clearing and deletion, quota operations, and disclosure of configuration and environment data. The report says the default bind is 0.0.0.0:8080 and that it tested LMCache 0.5.5. Issue #5511 Determine whether this server runs, what it can access or modify, and whether untrusted clients can reach it.
Frontend service, issue #5512 The reporter alleges unauthenticated proxy and node-catalog modification and says the report tested LMCache 0.5.5. Issue #5512 Determine whether the frontend service runs and restrict access to trusted operators while checking for a confirmed project response.

These reports are not an official vulnerability inventory or a verified list of affected versions. Treat each as a prompt to validate your own running services and exposure, not as proof that every deployment has the described weakness.

Is CVE-2026-10813 the same vulnerability?

No. The GitHub Advisory Database record for GHSA-3hh9-752g-5g22 describes CVE-2026-10813 as a separate weak-hash issue affecting versions through 0.4.6 and rates it low severity. That advisory does not identify it as the October 2026 /run_script report, so it should not be treated as confirmation of that report or as a patch notice for it.
