Patch Zammad by following the upgrade procedure for your deployment type—OS packages or Docker Compose—after reviewing the release notes, checking dependencies, and verifying a backup. Then harden production access: use HTTPS, keep Elasticsearch private or set a custom password before exposing it, and check security advisories for affected versions. Zammad’s release page dated August 25, 2026 identifies version 7.1.3 as an important security update and urges self-hosted operators to upgrade immediately; check the current release and advisories before scheduling work.
Before patching, identify your deployment and target version
Package installations and Docker Compose deployments have different update and backup procedures. Confirm which one you operate before following a guide; package commands and assumptions do not automatically apply to a Compose stack.

Start with Zammad’s update documentation and the release notes for the version you plan to install. Check for required additional steps, technical remarks, fixes and breaking changes, including notes for intermediate major versions. Do not skip major versions. Also confirm that the server still meets Zammad’s current dependencies.

Before changing the installation, create a backup and make sure it is usable for your recovery plan. Use the procedure matching your deployment type; Zammad maintains separate backup and restore guidance for Docker and package installations. Its migration guidance also warns operators to back up before upgrading. This guide does not substitute for those deployment-specific procedures.

Use the update path for your installation type
| Operation | OS package installation | Docker Compose |
|---|---|---|
| Update method | Use the distribution-specific package instructions in Zammad’s update guide. | Update the Compose deployment using Zammad’s Docker installation guidance and current Compose repository instructions. |
| Backup and restore | Follow the package-specific procedure in the update documentation. | Follow the separate Docker-specific backup and restore procedure linked from the Docker installation documentation. |
| What else to maintain | Maintain the host OS and package repository as well as Zammad. For Zammad 7 packages, the repository/toolchain transition may apply; check the host upgrade and repository migration instructions. | Keep the Compose repository and deployment files current alongside the containers. Zammad notes that it does not support Docker- or Portainer-specific problems in its Docker documentation. |
| HTTPS configuration | Use the SSL webserver configuration described in Configure the Webserver. | Use a TLS-terminating reverse proxy or tunnel scenario as described in the Docker guide and Compose scenarios. |
Package installation
Zammad’s package update instructions describe stopping the service, taking a backup, and then updating the package. Use the instructions for your supported distribution rather than copying a command for a different package manager.
Pay attention to update order if you are also updating the database server. Zammad warns that updating the database server and Zammad together can cause errors if the database is not available again when Zammad’s update runs. Where that sequencing issue applies, update the rest of the host while excluding Zammad, then update Zammad separately.

For Zammad 7 packages, repository migration may be required because packages starting with version 7 use a new toolchain and repository URL. Check the distribution-specific steps and supported operating system in the migration guide before changing repositories.

Docker Compose installation
Use the Docker-specific upgrade and backup guidance rather than the package procedure, and keep the Compose repository current. Zammad’s Docker installation documentation specifies at least 4 GB of RAM for the containers and requires vm.max_map_count=262144 for Elasticsearch; confirm these prerequisites in the current documentation for your environment.

Prioritize these production security controls
Serve the web application over HTTPS
Zammad says its sample non-SSL zammad.conf is for local testing only, not production. For package deployments, configure the documented SSL setup for Nginx or Apache, including the certificate, private key and trusted CA certificate; validate the configuration and reload the webserver as directed by Zammad’s webserver guide. The guide also describes a Diffie-Hellman parameter file as an HTTPS security improvement.
For a Compose deployment published to the internet, use HTTPS with a TLS-terminating reverse proxy or Cloudflare Tunnel, following the relevant Docker guidance. In the documented proxy scenario, set NGINX_SERVER_SCHEME=https: Zammad’s own Nginx overwrites X-Forwarded-Proto with the scheme it receives. Without the setting, session cookies may not be written and login can fail with a CSRF token verification error. See the Compose scenario instructions for the applicable configuration.

Keep Elasticsearch off the public internet
Zammad warns that Elasticsearch contains most Zammad data and that exposing it without a custom ELASTICSEARCH_PASS is a major security issue. Keep Elasticsearch private unless external access is genuinely required; if it is required, set a custom password first and follow the official scenario guidance for connecting external tools.

Zammad’s release page identifies 7.1.3, dated August 25, 2026, as an important security update. It lists fixes for an SSRF protection bypass via DNS rebinding, unauthorized object disclosure through a Core Workflow endpoint, and cross-tenant attachment disclosure through inline images in notification emails. The page strongly advises self-hosted installations to upgrade to the latest version immediately. Because a later release may be available, verify the current release and affected-version ranges before deciding whether an installation is exposed: consult the 7.1.3 release page and Zammad’s security advisory listing.

Version 7.1.3 also reintroduces a frame-ancestors 'self' Content Security Policy directive. If your reverse proxy permits cross-origin iframe embedding by changing only X-Frame-Options, the CSP directive may still block the embed. Adjust CSP only for trusted origins if cross-origin embedding is an intentional requirement, and account for this behavior when reviewing the release notes.
Zammad’s advisory archive says its final website advisory was ZAA-2026-07, published April 8, 2026, and directs readers to GitHub for subsequent advisories. As a historical example—not a current exposure check—ZAA-2026-06 describes a critical SQL injection affecting Zammad 6.5.x, fixed in 7.0.0 and 6.5.3. Use the current advisory listing and the affected-version range for each notice when assessing your own deployment: Zammad Security Advisories and ZAA-2026-06.
