Pass each capture option as its own query-string parameter, and URL-encode the target page URL as the value of url. This matters when the page URL contains its own ?, &, spaces, or other special characters. Parameter names, authentication, and whether a provider accepts a setting on GET or POST depend on that API.
Build the request query string
A typical GET request has the screenshot endpoint, a question mark, and ampersand-separated name=value pairs:
https://api.example/v1/screenshot?url=ENCODED_PAGE_URL&width=1280&format=png
Here, url is the page to capture; width and format are example options. They are illustrative names, not universal API parameters. Use the endpoint and option names in your provider’s documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Encode the target URL as one value
If the page URL is https://example.com/search?q=maps&lang=en, its internal question mark and ampersand must be encoded when it is placed inside the API request’s url value. Otherwise, the API may parse q or lang as screenshot options instead of part of the page address.
Use a URL-building library or your HTTP client’s encoding support rather than manually concatenating the nested URL. For example, curl’s --data-urlencode encodes each supplied parameter value:

curl --get 'https://api.example/v1/screenshot'
--data-urlencode 'url=https://example.com/search?q=maps&lang=en'
--data-urlencode 'width=1280'
--data-urlencode 'format=png'
--output screenshot.png
Replace the example endpoint and option names with those in the chosen provider’s reference. The output filename should match the returned format.
Choose GET or POST based on the integration
GET is useful for straightforward captures and when the image needs to be referenced by URL, such as in an HTML <img> element. RenderScreenshot describes its GET endpoint as suitable for image-tag and Open Graph image use. For a public image URL, check whether the provider offers signed URLs or another way to avoid exposing credentials.

For a more complex server-side capture, POST with a JSON body may be preferable if the provider supports it. ScreenshotEngine recommends POST for server integrations because its GET form includes an api_key in the URL, while POST accepts a Bearer API key. These are provider-specific implementations, not universal rules.
| Request style | Can suit | Check before using |
|---|---|---|
| GET with query parameters | Simple requests or workflows that need an image URL | Whether the provider supports each option on GET, and how it authenticates the request |
| POST with JSON | More complex server-side configurations, when the API supports it | Accepted JSON fields, authentication method, and whether the desired options are available on POST |
Check parameter names and availability
Screenshot APIs do not share a standard set of option names or a single rule for which options work on GET. Confirm each parameter’s spelling, casing, type, default, and supported request method in the provider’s reference. For example, the documented APIs differ in how they name options and divide basic GET settings from advanced POST settings.

Common categories include the page URL, output format, width and height, full-page capture, and cache behavior. Do not assume an option exists or behaves identically across providers. ScreenshotEngine, for example, documents snake_case names for GET options and camelCase names for POST options; its banner setting is block_banners on GET and blockBanners on POST.
Keep API credentials out of public URLs
Follow the authentication guidance for the specific service. Some APIs accept a key in a query parameter; others support headers or signed URLs. A key in an image URL can be visible to anyone who can inspect the page source or request, so do not put a production secret in public HTML. Use a server-side request with header authentication or a signed URL when the provider supports it.
Troubleshoot malformed or unexpected captures
- The capture opens the wrong page or drops part of its query: encode the entire target URL as the value of the API’s
urlparameter. Use--data-urlencodeor a URL-building library. - An option is ignored or rejected: verify the exact parameter name, capitalization, value type, and whether it is supported on the request method you chose.
- The server reports an authentication error: check the provider’s required authentication format and placement. If switching from GET to POST, confirm whether it expects a header such as Bearer authentication.
- An image tag exposes a key: remove the credential from public markup and use a server-side request or the provider’s signed-URL mechanism if available.
- The request URL becomes unwieldy: use POST with JSON if the API supports it and the integration does not require a public image URL.
Or skip the browser setup
ScreenshotNeo takes a screenshot or PDF with one GET request. Its API removes cookie or consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents use the take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots a month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
