How to Make a Live Stream More Reliable with Amazon IVS

A practical Amazon IVS reliability guide: trace buffering to its source, monitor stream health, check network and encoder settings, and plan reconnection without assuming automatic failover.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To make an Amazon IVS Low-Latency live stream more reliable, first identify whether the problem is at the encoder, on the broadcaster’s local network, along the route to IVS, in the IVS control plane, or at viewers’ playback devices. Use IVS Stream Health, CloudWatch, EventBridge alerts, and session analytics to locate the failure before changing settings. Then address the observed cause: check network egress, tune keyframes, and validate encoder reconnection behavior. IVS does not automatically fail over ingestion or transcoding.

Start by identifying who is affected

A buffering report does not, by itself, identify the source of the problem. Ask whether all viewers began buffering at roughly the same time or whether reports are limited to a particular device, ISP, or network.

  • Many viewers affected at once: Check whether the broadcaster stopped sending data or the broadcast session became unstable. If IVS has no incoming content to distribute, viewers may buffer.
  • Only some viewers affected: Investigate viewer-side conditions such as local bandwidth competition, ISP congestion, manual quality selection, or adaptive-bitrate playback behavior.

Audience reports are useful clues, not proof of a service fault. Compare their timing with broadcast-session metrics and events before assigning a cause. AWS describes IVS low-latency channels as having latency under 5 seconds; that is a service latency description, not a reliability guarantee. See the Amazon IVS overview.

What is stream starvation?

Stream starvation occurs when IVS receives fewer bits over time than the encoder said it would send. AWS lists the encoder, local network conditions, and the route over the public internet to IVS among the common causes. It is a broadcast-path symptom, not a diagnosis that IVS itself is at fault.

When the broadcaster stops sending data, IVS has no new content to deliver, so playback can buffer. Correlate reported buffering with the broadcaster’s session health before focusing on viewer devices or treating the incident as an IVS service problem. AWS’s troubleshooting guidance is in Troubleshooting Amazon IVS.

How do I diagnose stream instability using IVS Stream Health?

  1. Open the affected broadcast session in IVS Stream Health. Inspect the time series for video bitrate, frame rate, and audio bitrate around the time reports began.
  2. Check stream-health analytics and session events. Review encoder configuration, ingest metrics, and events for the session to see whether the incoming stream changed or stopped.
  3. Compare with CloudWatch. Use IVS metrics to examine session behavior and configure alarms where appropriate. Establish alarm conditions from your encoder’s expected profile and a healthy baseline; do not assume one universal bitrate threshold suits every stream.
  4. Check viewer scope and timing. Compare the incident time with reports from affected viewers and with the stream-health timeline. This helps distinguish a broadcast interruption from viewer-side congestion or playback conditions.

For current metric retention and rollup details, consult AWS’s IVS monitoring documentation. Amazon Web Services’ 2026-access-year documentation says CloudWatch IVS statistics are retained for 15 months. It documents high-resolution metric rollups of 3 hours at one-second resolution, 15 days at 60-second resolution, 63 days at five-minute resolution, and 455 days at one-hour resolution. These retention and rollup details can change, so check the live documentation when planning investigations.

How do I monitor stream-starvation events?

Use EventBridge stream-health change events to detect starvation start and end, then route them to an operations notification or an appropriate response target. This can alert the team before viewers report a problem. Use CloudWatch for metrics and alarms, and IVS session analytics for current diagnosis or retrospective investigation. Choose alert conditions based on the healthy behavior of the production encoder profile rather than an invented all-purpose threshold. AWS explains the available options in its troubleshooting guidance and monitoring documentation.

Check the broadcaster’s network and route to IVS

If metrics point to insufficient or interrupted ingest, check whether other programs or devices are consuming bandwidth. If the local connection appears adequate but the route from the ISP to IVS remains suspect, ask the ISP to investigate network conditions. For a fixed broadcast setup with unreliable Wi-Fi, wired Ethernet is an option to consider, not a guaranteed cure for congestion or a fix specifically promised by AWS.

Also verify that the broadcast network permits the egress path required by the selected ingest protocol. AWS lists these paths for IVS Low-Latency Streaming:

Protocol Destination Port and transport
RTMPS *.live-video.net TCP 443
RTMP *.live-video.net TCP 1935
SRT *.srt.live-video.net TCP 9000
WebRTC signaling and media IVS endpoints TCP 4443 for signaling; UDP ephemeral ports 32768–61000 for media

AWS says IVS_LOW_LATENCY IP subnets must be reachable regardless of the selected AWS Region, because streamers may connect to any subnet. Check the current IVS network requirements and AWS IP range data before changing production firewall rules; the live lists can change. AWS notes that the cited network requirements do not apply to AWS PrivateLink ingest.

Review encoder settings that affect stability

Set a suitable keyframe interval

AWS’s setup guide recommends a two-second keyframe interval as a standard setting. A one-second interval may reduce latency, but can cause the player’s adaptive-bitrate logic to switch resolutions more often and may increase buffering in some conditions. AWS advises against intervals over five seconds because startup latency can rise and segments may lack an IDR/keyframe, risking decode errors or visual distortions. See the IVS setup guide and streaming configuration guidance.

Choose an ingest path that fits the broadcast

IVS supports broadcast workflows using its native Broadcast SDK, the IVS console for testing, and third-party software or hardware encoders that support the required protocols. AWS recommends native SDKs especially for production scenarios in its setup guidance. Match the protocol to the encoder and firewall rules, and avoid adding a third-party restreaming or forwarding service unless there is a specific need: AWS strongly recommends against it because it adds latency.

Validate reconnection behavior

AWS documents that when an encoder stops sending data, IVS waits 30 seconds before disconnecting. A subsequent reconnect, whether automatic or manual, starts a new stream. Configure and test the encoder or client’s recovery behavior for the actual production workflow; the 30-second wait does not mean IVS will automatically reconnect or fail over the broadcast.

For mobile broadcasters using the IVS Broadcast SDK, automatic bitrate adjustment can respond to changing network conditions. If a Broadcast SDK error occurs, retrieve the unique broadcast session identifier using the platform API and provide it to AWS Support. Check that the SDK version is current and review its release notes as part of troubleshooting. The identifier helps support investigate the session; it does not itself diagnose or resolve the problem. See the IVS Broadcast SDK documentation.

Understand IVS failover limits

IVS uses a global data plane, and streamers automatically ingest to a nearby point of presence. That does not provide automatic failover for every failure type. AWS states that it does not provide automated failover for ingestion or transcoding failures and recommends configuring encoders or clients to re-ingest after broadcast failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A separate control-plane issue is also distinct from ingest recovery: AWS says IVS does not natively fail over its regional control plane. If an application requires regional control-plane failover, the application needs its own logic. AWS says it has no official guidance for managing regional channel failover, so do not treat an undocumented regional recipe as a supported IVS design. Read IVS resilience guidance alongside the troubleshooting guide.
