The steps depend on the Civic’s model year and audio system, so use the instructions for your exact vehicle rather than assuming every Civic has the same menus. The examples below are from Honda’s U.S.-market 2019 and 2020 guides.
Before you start
- Park the Civic. Honda’s 2019 Civic Type R guide says pairing can only be done while the vehicle is stopped.
- Turn on Bluetooth in your phone’s settings and be ready to make it discoverable if the car asks.
- Use the guide for your Civic’s model year, body style, and audio system. Honda documents separate Color Audio and Display Audio procedures, and their menus differ.
Pair a phone with the Civic
Color Audio: 2019 examples
Honda’s 2019 guides for the Civic Sedan and Hatchback describe starting pairing with the Phone or pick-up/hang-up control, then following the prompts on the car and phone. Depending on the setup, either the car or the phone searches for the other device. If the phone does not appear in the car’s list, use the vehicle’s search or refresh option where available, or search from the phone for “HandsFreeLink.”

Color Audio: 2020 examples
On the 2020 Civic Sedan guide’s documented route, select Phone > Phone Setup > Bluetooth Setup > Add new device, then follow the prompts. The 2020 Hatchback guide also describes Color Audio pairing, but follow that vehicle’s own manual if its menu labels or sequence differ.

Display Audio: 2019 Civic Type R example
On the 2019 Civic Type R Display Audio system, select Phone on the vehicle display and confirm the prompt. Make the phone discoverable, continue on the car, and select the phone when it appears. If it is not listed, use the vehicle’s refresh/search option or search for “HandsFreeLink” from the phone.

Confirm the pairing
When the car and phone display a pairing code, check that the codes match, then accept the pairing request on both devices. Honda’s guides note that how the code is presented can vary by phone. Once pairing is complete, the phone should appear as a paired device in the car’s Bluetooth or phone settings.
Why won’t my Honda Civic find my phone?
The phone is not discoverable
Check that Bluetooth is on and that the phone is visible to nearby devices during pairing. If the Civic is searching without finding it, open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and search for devices; select “HandsFreeLink” if it appears.

The car’s device list needs another search
Some of Honda’s documented systems provide a manual search or refresh option. Use it if automatic discovery does not show the phone. The exact control and menu location depend on the audio system.

CarPlay or Android Auto is active on a specific system
Honda says that on the 2019 Civic Type R Display Audio configuration described in its guide, an active Apple CarPlay or Android Auto connection prevents adding another Bluetooth-compatible device; the Add Bluetooth Device control is grayed out. This limitation is documented for that configuration, not established here as a rule for every Civic. Disconnect the active connection and check whether the add-device control becomes available.

The menu does not match these steps
The steps above cover selected 2019 and 2020 U.S.-market guides, not every Civic year, trim, audio unit, or market. Find the manual for the exact vehicle on Honda Owners and follow its Bluetooth instructions. Honda’s manuals are vehicle-specific; its support resources also provide how-to information.
