To pair a JBL Cove speaker with your phone, turn on the speaker, put it into the model’s Bluetooth pairing mode, open Bluetooth settings on the phone, scan for devices, and select the Cove speaker. JBL’s published instructions are general rather than Cove-model-specific, so use the quick-start guide for your exact Cove M1, P1 or X1 control sequence if a normal press of the Bluetooth control does not start pairing.
What you need before pairing
Bluetooth pairing is a direct connection between the phone and the speaker. It is separate from adding Cove to your home Wi-Fi through the JBL One app. You do not need a charging dock, another Cove speaker, a soundbar or a Wi-Fi network simply to play audio from a phone over Bluetooth.

- The exact Cove model: JBL’s Cove range includes M1, P1 and X1. Controls can differ between models, and the available official pairing article does not establish one button combination or indicator pattern for all of them.
- A powered speaker: Turn the speaker on and keep it close to the phone during setup. JBL has not published a Cove-specific Bluetooth range figure in the material cited here, so do not rely on a range number from another JBL product.
- A phone with Bluetooth enabled: iPhone and Android phones both provide Bluetooth controls in Settings, although menu wording can vary by operating-system version.
- The model manual or quick-start guide: Keep it available for the exact action that places your Cove in pairing mode.
For Cove P1, JBL lists Bluetooth as an audio input alongside Wi-Fi and USB, with Bluetooth 5.3 using the A2DP v1.3.2 and AVRCP v1.5 profiles. Those specifications are for P1 and should not be assumed for every Cove model. See the JBL Cove P1 product page for the manufacturer’s published specifications.

1. Identify the Cove model
Look at the label, packaging or manual and confirm whether the speaker is a Cove M1, P1 or X1. This matters because JBL’s general Bluetooth article does not give a Cove-specific first-pairing sequence. Knowing the model prevents you from applying a button instruction or light pattern intended for a different speaker.

Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
If you are helping someone else set up the speaker, write down the model before touching the controls. Product names can look similar, and a generic JBL speaker guide may describe a different control layout. The model number also determines which reset instructions and app features are relevant later.
2. Turn on the speaker
Power on the Cove and wait for it to finish starting. If it was previously connected to another phone, that phone may still be the active source. Move that other phone out of range temporarily, turn off its Bluetooth, or disconnect the Cove from its Bluetooth menu before trying to pair a new device.
Keep the speaker awake and powered throughout the initial scan. Avoid switching rapidly between power, source and network controls while the phone is searching; a speaker that leaves its active state may disappear from the list even though nothing is wrong with the phone.

3. Put the speaker in Bluetooth pairing mode
Use the Bluetooth control described in the manual for your model. JBL’s general guidance says many of its speakers enter pairing mode with a quick press of the Bluetooth button, while some require holding the control for several seconds. The retrieved official material does not confirm which action applies to each Cove model, so do not treat a particular button press, tone or LED color as universal.
If the speaker is already connected to a phone, a short press may not be enough to make it discoverable. Disconnect the existing source first, then repeat the model-specific pairing action. If the control does not respond, consult the Cove manual before considering a reset.
Pairing mode is different from simply turning Bluetooth on in the phone. The phone can have Bluetooth enabled and still find nothing if the speaker is not advertising itself for a new connection. Start the speaker-side action first, then leave the phone’s discovery screen open while the speaker is ready.
4. Open Bluetooth settings on the phone
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Open Bluetooth (on some Android phones this is under Connected devices).
- Turn Bluetooth on.
- Stay on the Bluetooth screen while the phone scans for nearby devices.
JBL’s general pairing workflow is to enable Bluetooth, scan for available devices and select the speaker when it appears. The support guidance is available from JBL’s Bluetooth pairing support page.

Do not use the JBL One app as a substitute for this first Bluetooth scan. The app is useful for Wi-Fi onboarding and Cove management, but ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing is completed from the phone’s Bluetooth settings.
5. Select the Cove speaker
When the Cove name appears in the available-device list, tap it. The phone should show a connecting or paired status, and audio output should switch to the speaker. If a confirmation prompt appears, accept it. A PIN is not specified in the retrieved Cove instructions; if the phone requests one, check the exact model manual rather than guessing.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Wait for the status to change before starting playback. Tapping the entry repeatedly, leaving the screen, or turning Bluetooth off during the connection handshake can create an incomplete saved record. If the entry changes to “connected,” the phone and speaker have completed the Bluetooth link even if Wi-Fi has not been configured.
6. Test playback and set the output
Start a song, podcast or other audio on the phone. If the phone continues playing through its own speaker, open the operating system’s audio-output selector and choose the Cove. Adjust volume on the phone and speaker as needed. A successful Bluetooth connection does not mean the speaker has been added to Wi-Fi or to a multiroom group; those are separate setup tasks.

| Symptom | What to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The phone finds no Cove device | The speaker may not be in pairing mode, or another phone may still be connected. | Repeat the model-specific pairing action, turn off Bluetooth on the previously connected phone, and scan again. |
| The Cove appears but connection fails | The phone may have an old, incomplete pairing record. | In the phone’s Bluetooth settings, select the Cove and choose the available “Forget,” “Unpair” or equivalent option. Put the speaker back into pairing mode and pair again. |
| The speaker connects to the wrong phone | That phone is within range and has an active or preferred connection. | Disconnect the Cove from that phone or temporarily disable its Bluetooth, then pair from the intended phone. |
| It connects, but there is no sound | The phone may still be routing audio to its handset, headphones or another output. | Choose Cove in the phone’s audio-output control and test with a different app or track. |
| The connection drops during setup | The phone and speaker may be too far apart, or the speaker may be changing power state. | Keep both devices close, keep the speaker powered on and repeat the scan. No Cove-specific range or timeout is established in JBL’s published material. |
JBL notes that some speakers support only one active Bluetooth connection at a time. Therefore, a phone that cannot find the Cove may simply be competing with an already connected source. The general guidance is to verify pairing mode and existing connections before escalating to a reset.
Phone-side checks that are safe to try
- Turn the phone’s Bluetooth off, wait briefly, turn it on again and reopen the device list.
- Move the phone next to the speaker during discovery and keep other previously paired phones from attempting to connect.
- If an old Cove entry is listed but will not connect, use the phone’s Forget or Unpair command, then begin a fresh scan.
- Make sure the speaker is not being used by another app or source at the same time.
- Restart the phone only after the simpler Bluetooth and source-selection checks; a restart does not erase the Cove’s network configuration.
These actions are deliberately less destructive than a factory reset. They target the phone’s discovery state or an existing connection while leaving the speaker’s saved Wi-Fi setup intact.

Reconnect a phone that was paired before
If the phone and Cove have already been paired, you normally do not need to repeat first-time discovery. Turn on the speaker, enable Bluetooth on the phone and select the Cove from the phone’s saved-device list if it does not reconnect automatically.
Cove P1 has a Bluetooth reconnection setting in the JBL One app. When that setting is enabled, JBL says the speaker reconnects to the source device after power-up. The setting is documented in JBL’s Cove P1 Bluetooth reconnection support article. This feature is specifically documented for P1; do not assume the same control or behavior for M1 or X1 without their documentation.
Automatic reconnection can be affected by the phone’s Bluetooth state, whether another device connected first, and whether the old pairing record was removed. If manual selection works but automatic reconnection does not, verify the P1 app setting and the phone’s saved Bluetooth entry before deleting anything.

When several paired phones are nearby, the phone that connects first can become the active source. Turning Bluetooth off on the unwanted phone for a moment is a simple way to make the intended phone the next connection. Re-enable it afterward if needed, but remember that the Cove may reconnect to whichever eligible source becomes active first.

Two different wireless processes can involve the same phone:
| Connection path | What it does | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| Bluetooth audio | Sends audio directly from the phone to the Cove. | Powered speaker, Bluetooth pairing mode and the phone’s Bluetooth settings. |
| JBL One app onboarding | Adds the Cove to Wi-Fi and configures network or whole-home features. | JBL One app, a compatible phone and your home network. |
| Wi-Fi playback and multiroom | Uses the home network and supported services for network playback and groups. | Completed app and Wi-Fi setup; service and feature availability can vary by region. |
JBL says the JBL One app first establishes a secure Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection before transferring network credentials for covered Cove products. That BLE link is an app-onboarding step; it is not the same as Bluetooth audio streaming. JBL explains the requirement in its support article on why Bluetooth is needed before network connection.
Once Cove is configured for Wi-Fi, playback can continue through the network without the source phone remaining in the room or staying in the direct playback chain. This is why pairing a phone over Bluetooth is not a substitute for adding the speaker to the JBL One app, and app setup is not required merely to send local phone audio over Bluetooth.
Choose Bluetooth when you want the phone itself to be the immediate audio source or when you are not configuring a home network. Choose Wi-Fi and the app when you need network playback, supported services or whole-home grouping. The two paths can coexist; setting up one does not automatically complete the other.
Do you need to buy anything to pair the speaker?
No separate pairing accessory is identified by JBL. A phone, a powered Cove speaker and the model’s Bluetooth instructions are enough for direct Bluetooth audio. For Cove P1, JBL lists a charging dock and power adapter in the box, so the dock is an included product component rather than a required add-on purchase for pairing.
You also do not need another Cove unit, a JBL Bar MK2 product, a subscription or a Wi-Fi router for the basic phone-to-speaker Bluetooth connection. Those items may matter to a whole-home or home-theater arrangement, but they are optional ecosystem choices, not prerequisites for the steps above.
When a factory reset is appropriate
A reset should be a last resort, not the first response to a missing Bluetooth device. First confirm that the Cove is powered on, in the correct model-specific pairing mode, and not connected to another phone. Also remove an obsolete Cove entry from the phone and try pairing again.
For Cove M1, P1 and X1, JBL documents two reset methods:

- Power on the speaker and hold Play and Moment for more than 10 seconds.
- Use Restore Factory Settings in the JBL One app.
JBL warns that resetting erases saved network settings and Bluetooth data. You will have to set up the speaker again, including Wi-Fi onboarding if you use those features. Follow the exact procedure in JBL’s Cove Series factory-reset instructions; do not perform the key combination casually while troubleshooting a normal pairing problem.
A reset is most reasonable when ordinary pairing records and source conflicts have been ruled out, or when you are preparing to hand the speaker to another owner. Afterward, treat the speaker as new: complete the model’s pairing process again, and repeat JBL One Wi-Fi onboarding if that was previously configured.
Cove P1 facts relevant to phone pairing
The Cove P1 is described by JBL as a portable Wi-Fi home speaker that also accepts Bluetooth audio. The US product page lists Bluetooth 5.3, A2DP v1.3.2 and AVRCP v1.5, and states up to 14 hours of playback. “Up to” is the manufacturer’s specification, not an independent battery test. JBL also lists a charging dock and power adapter in the box; the dock is included and is not a separate requirement for Bluetooth pairing.
JBL presents Cove as an ecosystem that can work with other Cove devices and JBL Bar MK2 products for whole-home or home-theater arrangements. Those options are optional ecosystem features. A single phone-to-speaker Bluetooth connection does not require another Cove unit, a compatible soundbar or a multiroom group.
The P1 specifications describe what that model supports, not a promise that M1 and X1 use exactly the same Bluetooth version, profiles, battery duration or controls. If a specification affects your purchase decision, consult the product page for that exact model rather than generalizing from P1.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a Wi-Fi setup step for Bluetooth audio: JBL One onboarding and direct Bluetooth playback are different operations.
- Assuming every JBL button sequence is interchangeable: Use the Cove model manual instead of copying a sequence from another JBL speaker.
- Resetting too early: A reset deletes network settings and Bluetooth data; first clear the phone’s old entry and resolve another-phone connections.
- Assuming a visible saved name means an active connection: Select the saved Cove entry and verify that the phone reports it as connected.
- Ignoring output routing: A connected speaker can still be bypassed if the phone’s audio-output selector remains set to headphones or the handset.
- Expecting a universal range or timeout: JBL’s published Cove material does not establish either figure, so do not use numbers from unrelated products.
Limits of the published pairing information
The official material available for this procedure does not establish a universal Cove button sequence, pairing-light color, pairing timeout, Bluetooth range, multipoint capability or identical Bluetooth specifications across M1, P1 and X1. For those details, use the manual for the exact model rather than importing instructions from another JBL speaker.
The reliable, model-independent workflow is therefore: place the Cove in its documented Bluetooth pairing mode, enable Bluetooth on the phone, scan, select the Cove, and troubleshoot existing connections before deleting data or resetting the speaker. That approach follows JBL’s general Bluetooth guidance while respecting the differences between Cove models.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I connect my phone to a JBL Cove speaker?
Turn on the Cove, use the exact model’s control to enter Bluetooth pairing mode, open Bluetooth in the phone’s Settings, scan and tap the Cove name. Then select the Cove as the phone’s audio output if sound still comes from the handset.
Why can’t my phone find my JBL Cove speaker?
The speaker may not actually be in pairing mode, or another phone may already be connected. Turn off Bluetooth on the other phone or disconnect the Cove there, repeat the model-specific pairing action and scan again. Keep the phone close during discovery.

Do I need the JBL One app to pair over Bluetooth?
No. Direct Bluetooth audio pairing uses the speaker’s pairing mode and the phone’s Bluetooth settings. JBL One is used for Wi-Fi onboarding, network playback and whole-home features.
Is Bluetooth Low Energy the same as Bluetooth audio on Cove?
No. JBL describes a secure BLE connection as part of JBL One app onboarding before Wi-Fi credentials are transferred. Bluetooth audio is the separate direct phone-to-speaker playback connection.
Can more than one phone connect to a Cove at once?
JBL’s general guidance notes that some speakers allow only one active Bluetooth connection. Do not assume simultaneous active connections; disconnect the other phone when a new phone cannot discover or connect.
How do I reconnect a previously paired phone?
Turn on the speaker, enable Bluetooth on the phone and select Cove from the saved-device list. For Cove P1, JBL documents an app setting that enables automatic reconnection to the source device after power-up.
Will factory reset fix pairing?
It can clear persistent saved data, but it should be a last resort. JBL says resetting Cove M1, P1 or X1 erases network settings and Bluetooth data. First check pairing mode, other connected phones and the phone’s old Cove entry.
Do I need a charging dock or Wi-Fi router for Bluetooth pairing?
No. A powered Cove and a Bluetooth-enabled phone are sufficient for direct audio. JBL lists a charging dock and power adapter in the Cove P1 box, but the dock is not a separate pairing requirement.
Does every Cove model use Bluetooth 5.3?
The retrieved JBL product specification lists Bluetooth 5.3, A2DP v1.3.2 and AVRCP v1.5 for Cove P1. Do not assume those specifications apply to M1 or X1 without their model-specific documentation.
Why is the Cove connected but silent?
Open the phone’s audio-output selector and choose Cove. If it is already selected, test another app or track and check the phone and speaker volume. A Bluetooth status alone does not guarantee that every app is routing audio to the speaker.
The Bottom Line
For direct phone audio, put the exact Cove model into its documented Bluetooth pairing mode, enable Bluetooth on the phone, scan and select the Cove. Resolve another-phone connections and stale phone entries before resetting. Use JBL One only when you also want Wi-Fi, network playback or whole-home features; a factory reset erases saved Bluetooth and network data.
