To use Bluetooth headphones with two devices, pair them with both devices—but for the headphones to stay connected to both at once, the exact model must support multipoint. With multipoint enabled, pause audio on one device and start it on the other. Without multipoint, select the saved headphones in the second device’s Bluetooth settings; you usually do not need to unpair them first.
Pairing two devices is different from connecting to two at once
Pairing saves the headphones on a phone, tablet, or computer so they can connect again later. It does not, by itself, mean the headphones can maintain two active connections. That capability is called multipoint, and support depends on the headphone model. Check the model’s manual or companion app before following multipoint setup steps. Sony’s multipoint guide notes that menu steps can vary by device and model.

If multipoint is unavailable, the headphones can still be paired with multiple devices; you’ll switch by connecting from the device you want to use. The difference is whether both sources remain connected, not whether both can be saved.

- Pair with the first source. Put the headphones in pairing mode using the steps in their model manual, then select them in the first device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Pair with the second source. Put the headphones in pairing mode again if required, and select them in the second device’s Bluetooth settings. Both sources need Bluetooth audio capability.
- Enable multipoint if needed. Some models require an app setting. For example, Sony’s WH-1000XM4 and ULT WEAR instructions use the setting “Connect to 2 devices simultaneously” in the Sony | Headphones Connect app. Other models may use different names or steps. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 support instructions and the ULT WEAR guide describe those model-specific procedures.
- Confirm both connections. Check each source’s Bluetooth settings or the headphone app to see that the headphones are connected to both.
Google’s Android multipoint steps
For compatible headphones, Google documents multipoint on Android 8 or later with Google Play Services. First pair the headphones with both desired sources. On the Android device, open Settings → Connected devices, select the headphones’ settings, tap Multipoint → Use Multipoint, then connect the headphones to the two sources. These are Google’s Android-specific menus; other devices and headphone brands may use different paths. Google’s Android multipoint instructions provide the supported-device steps.

Switch audio between connected devices
With multipoint active, stop or pause playback on the first device, then start playback on the second. Google’s instructions require stopping the audio on the first source before starting it on the second; Sony’s ULT WEAR guide likewise describes switching sources this way. If the second device’s audio does not come through, check that playback on the first has stopped and that the headphones are selected as the second device’s audio output. Calls may behave differently from music
Call routing is not necessarily the same as media switching. It can depend on the headphone model and source settings. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 instructions include separate setup for two Android phones and for an Android phone paired with an iPhone, including assigning call and media audio. Do not assume another model will route calls the same way; consult its guide. Sony’s call and multipoint instructions

Switch devices without multipoint
- Pair the headphones with each device once, if you have not already done so.
- On the device you want to hear from, open its Bluetooth settings and select the saved headphones. Menu labels vary by operating system.
- If the headphones will not connect, temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the device currently holding the connection, then select the headphones from the desired source.
Do not choose Forget This Device or Unpair just to change sources. Those options remove the saved pairing, so you will need to pair that device again. The regular connection process is described in Sony’s switching guidance.

Know the limits and model-specific tradeoffs
Multipoint describes simultaneous connections, not unlimited devices or guaranteed simultaneous playback. Sony’s WH-1000XM4 guide describes two active connections; when a third device connects, one of the existing connections may be displaced. The ULT WEAR guide also explains how connecting a third source affects active connections. Check your own model’s instructions rather than assuming every headset handles a third device the same way. Quick Recap
Quick troubleshooting checks
- Only one device connects: Confirm the headphones support multipoint, enable it in the required app or settings, and check that both sources have been paired.
- The second source is connected but silent: Stop playback on the first device, start playback on the second, and verify the headphones are selected as its audio output.
- The new device cannot connect: If multipoint is not supported or the current connection is blocking the switch, turn off Bluetooth temporarily on the device using the headphones, then connect from the new source.
- A third device interrupts a connection: Check the model’s stated connection limit and how it handles an additional source; behavior differs by product.
- Calls go to the wrong device: Review the headphone’s call-audio and media-audio settings and the Bluetooth settings on each phone; call routing is model- and source-dependent.
