You can pair a Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controller with a Meta Quest headset, but pairing does not guarantee that every Quest game or menu will accept its inputs. Turn on the controller, hold its Pair button until the Xbox button flashes, then select it in Quest’s Bluetooth settings. If it connects but does nothing, first check whether the app supports gamepads.
Can you use an Xbox controller on Meta Quest 3?
Yes, if the controller supports Bluetooth and the app you want to use accepts gamepad input. Xbox’s December 13, 2023 announcement about Xbox Cloud Gaming on Meta Quest says Quest works with Bluetooth-capable Xbox Wireless Controllers. Meta also documents Bluetooth gamepads as an input category on its VR platform, but that does not mean every retail app implements gamepad controls.

Check the exact controller revision rather than relying on a label such as “Xbox One wireless.” Microsoft identifies Xbox Wireless Controller with Bluetooth model 1708, Xbox Series S|X controllers, Elite Series 2, and Adaptive Controller as Bluetooth-capable in its controller connectivity guidance. That list corroborates Bluetooth capability; it is not a Quest certification list. Some Xbox One controller revisions do not have Bluetooth, so wireless operation alone is not enough to establish compatibility.

- Confirm Bluetooth support. Check the controller’s exact model or revision. Bluetooth-capable Series X|S controllers and Bluetooth-equipped Xbox One revisions are suitable; do not assume every Xbox One controller has Bluetooth.
- Put the controller in pairing mode. Press the Xbox button to turn it on. Hold the Pair/Connect button until the Xbox button flashes. Microsoft describes this flashing light as the indicator that the controller is ready to pair; see its Xbox controller pairing instructions.
- Open Bluetooth pairing on Quest. In the headset’s settings, open the Bluetooth device-pairing interface, scan for devices, and select the Xbox controller when it appears. Menu wording can vary by Quest software version, so follow the Bluetooth or device-pairing labels shown on your headset.
- Test it in a compatible app. Open the game or app you intend to use and try its navigation or controls. A successful Bluetooth connection does not make the controller a universal input device for Quest menus or VR titles.
For Xbox Cloud Gaming, install the Xbox Cloud Gaming app from the Quest Store and follow its in-app controller-pairing tutorial, as described in the Xbox announcement.

Why is my Xbox controller connected but not working on Quest?
The app may not support gamepad input
Gamepad support is decided by the individual app or game. Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Controller guidance makes app and game support a condition of using a controller. If the controller works in one Quest app but not another, that points to the second app’s input support or mapping—not necessarily a failed Bluetooth connection.
Gamepad Gaze mode may affect button input
If an app should accept a gamepad but ignores its buttons, check the Quest setting at Quick Settings > Settings > Devices > Gamepad and try turning off Gamepad Gaze. A Meta support account recommended this check for a connected gamepad whose buttons were not recognized in a Meta Community Forums troubleshooting thread. The path and label may change in later software versions.

The app may use different controls or mappings
Once Quest recognizes the controller, the app still determines how it uses the inputs. Check the app’s own controller mode, instructions, or mapping options if buttons behave unexpectedly. Meta’s Unity input documentation describes how an Xbox controller can become the active controller after user input and how developers identify connected controllers; it does not promise a standard button layout in every consumer app.

It does not appear in Quest’s Bluetooth list
- Verify that the exact controller revision supports Bluetooth; some Xbox One wireless controllers do not.
- Turn the controller on, then hold Pair until the Xbox button flashes before scanning on Quest.
- If it is already connected to another host, disconnect it there and try pairing again. This is a practical retry step, not a guaranteed Quest-specific fix.
It pairs, then disconnects or asks for a passkey
Remove or forget the saved controller entry in Quest’s Bluetooth settings and pair again. If the issue persists, check for controller firmware updates using Microsoft’s Xbox controller update guidance. Firmware can improve connectivity, but neither step is a guaranteed fix for every Quest/controller combination.

It works in one app but not another
Keep the existing Quest pairing and check whether the app that fails supports gamepads. Different apps can accept or ignore the same paired controller, and their input mappings may differ.

Use Bluetooth support, the precise controller revision, the target app’s gamepad support, and firmware as the deciding checks. Microsoft’s Apple-device compatibility list names model 1708, Series S|X, Elite Series 2, and Adaptive Controller as Bluetooth-capable, while its Bluetooth Low Energy firmware announcement discusses improvements for Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controllers, Elite Series 2, and Adaptive Controllers, including Android connectivity. These sources establish controller-family Bluetooth capability, not a complete list of models tested or certified for Quest.
