On Steam, indie developers set their own game prices; Valve does not prescribe one correct price. Launch discounts are optional, but sale timing is governed by cooldowns. Buyers generally have 14 days and less than two hours of playtime to request a refund for a game, subject to Steam’s policy and any applicable local rights.
How much should you charge for an indie game?
Steam leaves pricing decisions to each developer. It recommends weighing how long a game takes to complete, replayability, multiplayer features, whether it is in Early Access, prices of comparable games, and planned promotions. Its guidance is to research similar titles and consider customer reviews and perceived value—not to apply a fixed formula. Steamworks pricing guidance reports support for 37 currencies; that platform-reported scope does not mean one price fits every market.

Are launch discounts required, and how large can they be?
No. A Steam launch discount is optional and must be configured before the release date. Steam says it may run for 7–14 days, generally suggests a discount of 10–15%, and sets a maximum of 40%. These are Steam platform rules and recommendations, not a prediction of sales or revenue for a particular game. As a general rule, Steam products cannot be discounted for 30 days after release. The rule covers both Early Access and full release. A preconfigured launch discount is the exception. Steam also applies a 30-day cooldown after a price increase, and standard discounts generally need to be at least 30 days apart. A price decrease does not itself start the price-increase cooldown.

Seasonal sales are exempt from the cooldown between discounts, but that exemption does not override a cooldown following release or a price increase. Minimum-price thresholds and limits on discount duration may also affect eligibility. Developers should check the live Steamworks rules before committing to a calendar, especially when a price change or Early Access transition is planned.
How do Steam bundles work?
Steam documents two bundle formats. In both, the displayed amount can depend on which items a customer already owns and on discounts applied to individual products.

The bundle’s chosen percentage discount applies to eligible items, while a discount on an individual item can also affect the calculated bundle price. A bundle itself cannot be scheduled for a separate limited-time discount; its price can change when included products are discounted. Steam also allows collaborative bundles across developers or publishers. A maximum of three bundles can appear directly on a game’s store page, and country-specific minimum transaction prices may make a bundle unavailable in some regions. Can Steam bundles be refunded?
Yes, but refund conditions depend on the bundle and its contents. Steam says a bundle can receive a full refund if none of its items have been transferred and the combined usage time is under two hours. Bundle components may be subject to the rules for their respective content types; check the relevant purchase details and Steam refund policy.
What is Steam’s standard refund window for games?
For games and software, Steam’s standard refund offer is a request made within 14 days of purchase with less than two hours of playtime. Some DLC and in-game purchases have different conditions, and some are marked nonrefundable at checkout. A purchase made outside Steam—for example, a third-party CD key—is not refundable by Valve under this policy. Steam does not automatically refund the difference when a game’s price drops. Its Support FAQ says a buyer may request a refund for the original purchase and then buy the game again at the sale price, subject to refund eligibility. Steam’s general refund page says a prompt refund-and-repurchase to get a sale price is not considered abuse. See Steam’s answer to “Can I still get a discount?”.
