To pair AirPods, turn on Bluetooth on your device, put the AirPods into pairing mode, and select them from the device’s Bluetooth list. On an iPhone or iPad, opening the case nearby usually brings up a setup animation instead. The exact steps depend on your AirPods model—especially whether you have a case with a rear setup button, a newer case with a front touch control, or AirPods Max.
Before you pair: identify your AirPods and device
Pairing controls differ by AirPods model, so check which model you have before trying to activate pairing mode. AirPods and AirPods Pro use a charging case; AirPods Max use a listening mode button. On newer case designs, pairing mode is activated from the front of the case rather than with the rear setup button.

Pairing controls by model
- AirPods 4, AirPods 5, and AirPods Pro 3: Open the case with the AirPods inside and double-tap the front of the case until the status light flashes white.
- Other in-ear AirPods models: Open the case with the AirPods inside and press and hold the setup button on the back until the status light flashes white.
- AirPods Max: Use the listening mode button to enter pairing mode.
If your case or controls do not match these descriptions, check the instructions for your exact model rather than trying a reset or control sequence from another model.

Pair AirPods with an iPhone or iPad
- Update the iPhone or iPad to the latest iOS or iPadOS version, then open Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
- For AirPods or AirPods Pro, put both earbuds in their case, open the lid, and hold the case near the iPhone or iPad until the setup animation appears.
- For AirPods Max, remove them from the Smart Case and hold them near the device within 60 seconds.
- Follow the on-screen instructions to finish pairing.
An internet connection may be needed to access Find My features during setup.
If the setup animation does not appear
Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control for your model. Then go to Settings > Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad and tap AirPods when they appear in the device list. The light should flash white while the AirPods are ready to pair.

Pair AirPods with a Mac
- Update macOS, then open Apple menu > System Settings > Bluetooth and make sure Bluetooth is on.
- Put the AirPods into pairing mode using the control for your model.
- When AirPods appear in the Bluetooth device list, select them and click Connect.
If you already set up AirPods with an iPhone, Apple says they should connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. If they do not, select them in the Mac’s Bluetooth settings.

Pair AirPods with Android or another Bluetooth device
- Turn on Bluetooth in the settings of the Android phone, PC, or other Bluetooth device.
- For in-ear AirPods, put both earbuds in the case, open the lid, and activate pairing mode with the correct case control. For AirPods Max, use the listening mode button.
- On the non-Apple device, open its Bluetooth device list and select AirPods when they appear.
AirPods can work as a Bluetooth headset for listening and speaking on non-Apple devices, but Siri is unavailable. Do not assume that every Apple-specific feature is supported. See Apple’s instructions for pairing AirPods with a non-Apple device.

Fix AirPods that will not connect
Try these checks in order before resetting the AirPods. They address common setup and connection issues without removing the pairing first.
- Update your device. Install the latest available operating system update for your iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
- Check charging. Put both AirPods in the charging case and confirm that both are charging.
- Check Bluetooth. Make sure Bluetooth is enabled in the device’s settings.
- Check the audio output. Put the AirPods in your ears, open Control Centre on your Apple device, and select AirPods as the audio output if they are listed. Test audio and check the device’s volume.
- Close and reopen the case. Put both AirPods in the case, close the lid for 15 seconds, then open it again.
- Pair again. On a Mac, use manual pairing from Bluetooth settings. On an iPhone or iPad, activate pairing mode for your exact model and follow the setup prompts.
- Reset only if needed. If the AirPods still will not connect after pairing again, follow Apple’s reset instructions for your specific model. Reset steps are not universal, so do not use a reset sequence intended for a different model.

When to use manual pairing instead of the setup animation
Use manual pairing whenever the nearby setup animation does not appear, or when pairing to a Mac, Android device, PC, or another Bluetooth device. In every case, the key is to activate pairing mode with the control for the AirPods model and then select the AirPods in that device’s Bluetooth list. The target device can only connect when its Bluetooth is on and the AirPods are discoverable.
