Whether you need to reconnect a TCL Roku remote or set up a replacement, first check its type: a voice remote needs pairing, while a simple infrared (IR) remote does not. For a voice remote, follow the TV’s setup prompt or open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue, then put the remote in pairing mode.
Check whether your TCL Roku remote needs pairing
Look for a microphone or magnifying-glass button. A remote with a voice button is a voice remote that connects wirelessly and must be paired. Roku describes this wireless connection as pairing: Roku voice remote pairing guidance.

A remote without a voice button is generally a simple IR remote. It does not pair: install fresh batteries with the correct orientation, point it at the front of the TV, and make sure nothing blocks the signal. TCL and Roku remote behavior can vary by model, so check the remote and TV documentation if the design is unclear.

During the TV’s initial setup
Turn on the TV and follow the on-screen instructions to connect the remote. Keep it near the TV while pairing completes.

Using the TV or Roku mobile app
- Turn on the TV and let it finish starting. If you are using a working remote or the Roku mobile app, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.
- Put the voice remote into pairing mode. If it has a pairing button on the back or beneath the battery cover, press and hold it until the status light flashes. Roku specifies holding it for five seconds.
- If the remote has no pairing button, press and hold Back + Home until its status light flashes.
- Wait for the on-screen prompt and allow pairing to finish. Keep the remote close to the TV.
Remote instructions differ. TCL’s general guidance says to hold the pairing button for about five seconds; its Canada support guidance for the enhanced remote it covers says three seconds or until the light flashes. Use the status light and TV prompt as your cues rather than assuming every remote uses the same timing: TCL support and TCL Canada remote pairing guidance.
Pair without a second working controller
If you cannot use another remote or the Roku mobile app to reach Settings, restart the TV and wait for the Home screen. Then put the voice remote into pairing mode using its pairing button or, on supported buttonless remotes, Back + Home. Follow the pairing prompt on the TV. Roku’s voice-remote instructions describe unplugging the TV for at least five seconds before reconnecting it when a restart is needed: Roku voice remote pairing guidance.

Why a TCL Roku remote may not pair
- The batteries are depleted or installed incorrectly. Check their orientation and try fresh batteries. TCL notes that a pairing light that does not flash may indicate the batteries need replacing.
- The remote has not entered pairing mode. Press and hold the pairing button until the light flashes, or use Back + Home if the voice remote has no pairing button. The TV and remote need to be ready to pair at the same time.
- The remote is too far away or the signal is obstructed. Move closer to the TV and check for obstacles or possible interference.
- It is an IR remote, not a voice remote. Pairing steps will not help a simple remote. Use fresh batteries, point it at the front of the TV, and clear the path.
- The TV needs another restart. Roku’s guidance says to unplug for at least five seconds; TCL’s general troubleshooting recommends waiting at least 30 seconds before reconnecting. Follow the instructions for your TV and remote.

Model-dependent power-drain option
TCL Canada also describes restarting some TVs with the set’s physical button and draining power by unplugging it, then holding its power button for about 15 seconds. This is a model-dependent option, not a step required for every TCL Roku TV: TCL Canada remote pairing guidance.

Set up TV power and volume separately
Pairing the voice remote does not necessarily configure its TV power and volume buttons. On supported setups, open Settings > Remotes & devices > Remotes, choose the voice remote, and select Set up remote for TV control.
