Disassembly is optional: only open a controller if you can follow the correct model-specific instructions without risking its clips or electronics.
Choose a paint and application method for your controller
Controller shells do not all have the same surface, so check the paint label for plastic compatibility and test it on an inconspicuous area. A controller-customization tutorial demonstrates both brush and airbrush application, while spray-paint guidance covers products formulated for plastic; these examples do not establish that one method works on every shell. Choose based on compatibility with the shell, the finish and detail you want, your workspace and tools, the product’s cure schedule, and how well you can keep paint away from moving parts and seams. There is no universal best paint or method established for all controllers.
Gather materials and protect the work area
- Paint whose label supports use on plastic, plus any primer or other preparation product specified for that coating system.
- A fine-grit sanding sponge or sandpaper if appropriate for the selected process, clean cloths, and masking material.
- A ventilated, protected work area that follows the paint label’s safety directions.
- Optional disassembly tools specified for your exact controller model.
For example, Microsoft’s Xbox Elite Series 2 safety and repair instructions specify a plastic pry tool and TR8 security driver for certain procedures. Those tools and instructions are not universal to other controllers.

Decide whether to disassemble
Painting a removed shell can make masking and coverage easier, but opening electronics introduces risk. Microsoft warns that opening an Elite Series 2 can damage plastic snaps. If you are not comfortable following the exact service instructions for your model, do not improvise: limit the project to a removable shell or use a replacement shell instead.
If you do open the controller, power it down first and follow the model-specific instructions. For the Elite Series 2, Microsoft says to remove removable accessories before opening the top case and to release clips gently with a plastic pry tool. Keep screws and small parts organized, and keep paint, sanding dust, and solvents away from the battery and electronics.

Prepare the shell and mask functional areas
- Clean and dry it. Follow the paint maker’s preparation directions. Krylon advises that plastic should be clean and dry and recommends testing an inconspicuous spot when working with plastic or unusual materials. Use only a cleaning agent compatible with both the shell and the paint system; there is no universally safe solvent for every controller.
- Sand lightly if the process calls for it. The controller tutorial recommends light sanding with a fine-grit sanding sponge. Avoid aggressive sanding that could alter the shell’s fit or texture.
- Mask what must remain unpainted. Cover openings, buttons, thumbstick areas, seams, and any surfaces that need to move or mate cleanly. No universal paint-clearance measurement is established, so keep coating out of functional interfaces rather than relying on a fixed gap.
Preparation requirements can depend on the coating system. PPG’s PD-0200C bare-plastic refinishing procedure says, “To ensure good adhesion over a bare plastic substrate requires that it be cleaned properly and coated with adhesion promoter before application of an undercoat.” That is guidance for PPG’s refinishing system, not a mandatory recipe tested for every controller shell. Follow the instructions for the specific products you use.

Build the color gradually with thin coats rather than trying to cover the shell in one heavy pass. The controller tutorial recommends thin layers. Follow the selected product’s label for application, recoat intervals, and curing; those times vary by product.

For one specific example, Krylon says Harmony is touch-dry in approximately one hour and fully cured in 24 hours. Those figures apply to that product’s instructions, not to spray paint, brush paint, or controller coatings generally. Do not handle or reassemble based on another product’s schedule.

Wait until the coating has reached the cure stage specified by its manufacturer before reassembly. Align the shell and close seams without force; Microsoft stresses correct alignment during Elite Series 2 reassembly and notes that components can be fragile. Once assembled, check that buttons and thumbsticks move freely and that the seams close normally. If anything binds, stop rather than forcing the control or shell.
