You can use a filename convention to trigger your own automation, but a script must parse the name and then call YouTube’s APIs using YouTube resource IDs. For a manual workflow, schedule a video or broadcast in YouTube Studio instead.
First, separate the two workflows
“YouTube Live playlist scheduling” can refer to two different tasks. An uploaded video added to a playlist is not the same thing as a scheduled live broadcast.

- Schedule a live broadcast: create a broadcast event with a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status, then associate it with a stream. The broadcast represents the event; the stream represents the audio and video being transmitted. See the LiveBroadcasts API reference and Live Streaming API documentation.
- Add an uploaded video to a playlist: identify the destination playlist and the uploaded video by their YouTube IDs, then insert a playlist item. This operation does not schedule a live event. The playlistItems.insert API method requires OAuth 2.0 authorization.
A filename can be your script’s input, but YouTube’s documented scheduling controls are the Studio schedule fields and API resource fields—not a local filename.
Choose a filename convention your script can parse
Use one strict, predictable pattern. For example:
YYYY-MM-DD_HH-mm_topic_sequence.ext
Example: 2026-10-30_19-00_evening-mix_003.mp4
This is a suggested local convention, not a YouTube feature. Define the timezone separately in your script or its configuration: the example alone does not say whether 19:00 means UTC, Pacific time, or another zone. Use a 24-hour clock and a fixed-width sequence number if your script needs reliable sorting.

Decide how to handle ambiguous or invalid names
- Reject names that do not match the exact pattern; do not guess missing dates or times.
- Validate that the date and time are real values, including month lengths and leap days.
- Choose a policy for duplicate filenames and duplicate sequence numbers.
- Specify how daylight-saving time changes are handled in the selected timezone, especially for a local time that occurs twice or not at all.
- Keep the filename-to-YouTube-ID mapping in persistent storage so a rerun can identify videos already uploaded.
Build the automation around YouTube IDs
The filename supplies workflow metadata to your program. It does not replace YouTube’s IDs or authorize an API request. A practical workflow is:
- Scan a designated folder. Parse each candidate filename against the exact pattern and record its date, time, topic, and sequence.
- Validate before acting. Reject malformed or ambiguous names and apply your documented timezone policy before converting a scheduled time.
- Upload or identify the video. Track which local file corresponds to which YouTube video ID. YouTube’s upload documentation describes uploading a video as a separate operation that creates a YouTube video resource: Upload a video.
- Find the destination playlist ID. Do not assume that a local folder name or playlist title is the playlist ID. YouTube also associates channel uploads with an uploads playlist; user-created playlists are distinct playlist resources. See channel resource content details.
- Insert the playlist item. Send the destination playlist ID and a resource identifying
kind: youtube#videoand the video ID, with OAuth 2.0 authorization, as described in playlistItems.insert. - For a live event, schedule a broadcast separately. Create a broadcast with
snippet.title,snippet.scheduledStartTime, andstatus.privacyStatus, then associate it with a stream using the API operations. Keep the returned resource IDs for later calls. See the broadcast resource reference and Live Streaming API documentation. - Log outcomes and make reruns safe. Store successful uploads, playlist insertions, and broadcast creations. Before retrying a failed step, check whether it already succeeded; otherwise, a rerun may add duplicate playlist items or create duplicate broadcasts. This safety is the script’s responsibility, not a guarantee provided by filenames.
When YouTube Studio is enough
If you only need to schedule an uploaded video’s publication, Studio’s documented workflow is to select a file, enter its video details, then set the date, time, and timezone. A scheduled video remains private until its publication time. The published-on date shown on YouTube uses Pacific Standard Time, so it can display a different calendar date from the time zone selected in Studio. See Schedule video publishing.

For scheduled Live broadcasts, use the Live workflow rather than treating a playlist as an event schedule. The API requires a future scheduled start time and documents limits and error cases; parse success is not proof that YouTube accepted a schedule. Check the API response and handle failures.
Do not confuse HLS segment names with video filenames
YouTube’s HLS ingestion guide has filename, extension, and sequence requirements for media playlists and segments sent to the live ingest endpoint. Those rules govern transport and segment ordering, not a library of uploaded videos or their scheduled playlist positions. The guide’s “Media Playlist” refers to the segments expected by the server during stream delivery: HLS ingestion.

Troubleshoot common automation failures
- The name parses, but nothing appears in the playlist: parsing only extracts your local metadata. Confirm that the upload has a YouTube video ID, that the destination playlist ID is correct, and that the authorized API request completed successfully.
- The same video appears more than once: make retries idempotent. Persist completed insertions and check state before retrying a request.
- A scheduled time is wrong: verify the configured timezone and daylight-saving policy. Do not treat the filename’s date and time as timezone-aware unless your script explicitly makes them so.
- The scheduled broadcast is rejected: inspect the API error and confirm that required broadcast fields are present and the start time is in the future. The Live Streaming API reference documents additional limits and error cases.
- The watch page shows a different date: YouTube displays the published-on date using PST, which can differ from the timezone used when scheduling in Studio.
- A filename seems to control HLS playback order: HLS media-playlist and segment names apply to live ingestion, not the ordering of ordinary uploaded playlist videos.
