Open Start and drag pinned apps to reorder them. To group related apps, drag one pin onto another to make a folder; you can rename the folder, add pins, or drag pins back out. These are built-in Windows 11 controls.
Pin or remove an app
Pin an app to Start
- Search for the app from Start or the taskbar.
- Right-click the search result and select Pin to Start.
You can also pin a folder from File Explorer. In Microsoft Edge, pin a website by selecting More options > More tools > Pin to Start. Microsoft’s instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11; the steps here focus on Windows 11. Microsoft’s Start menu guide does not state a publication or revision date.

Unpin an app
Right-click its pin in Start and select Unpin from Start. This removes the shortcut from the pinned area; it does not uninstall the app.
Reorder the pinned apps
- Open Start.
- Drag a pin from its current position to the spot you want in the pinned grid.
Reordering changes where the shortcut appears, not the app itself. Microsoft describes the same action this way: “Whenever you want to change the order of pins on the Start menu, drag the pin from its current position to a different one.”

Group apps in folders
- Drag one pinned app onto another. Windows creates a folder containing the two pins.
- Open the folder and select its name to rename it.
- Drag other pinned apps into the folder to add them.
- To take an app out, open the folder and drag its pin back into the pinned grid.
When only one pin remains, Windows removes the folder from Start. Choose labels that match how you work—for example, Work, Communication, or Creative—rather than treating those as required categories.
Choose how to view apps and recommendations
Start remembers the last-used view for its Pinned and All sections. In All apps, you can choose Category, Grid, or List. These views change how you browse apps; they do not rearrange or group your pinned shortcuts.

You can also unpin items or turn off recommendation providers to reduce clutter. If all recommendations are turned off, or everything is unpinned, the corresponding sections collapse. These controls affect recommendations and section display, not the apps installed on your PC. See Microsoft’s Start menu guide for its Start menu options.
Navigate pins with a keyboard
Microsoft’s accessibility guidance describes using Tab and the arrow keys to move through pinned apps. Press a letter to jump to a pinned app whose name starts with that letter; first-letter navigation also works for folders. These are navigation methods, not a separate way to create or manage folders. See Microsoft’s keyboard navigation guidance.

Choose a layout that suits your routine
- Keep frequent apps individually pinned if you want to spot and launch them directly from the grid.
- Use folders for related apps when grouping them makes the overall pinned area easier to scan.
- Use All apps views when you prefer browsing a list, grid, or category arrangement instead of maintaining more pins.
- Use keyboard navigation if moving through pins with Tab, arrows, or first letters is more comfortable than dragging.
