How to Launch Windows Apps Faster Without Using the Start Menu

Use Search for apps you know by name, pin frequent apps to the taskbar, or open Run and the Apps folder for keyboard-led access—without launching Start.

You can open Windows apps without opening Start: press Windows+S to search by name, pin regular apps to the taskbar, or use Windows+R for Run and the installed-apps folder. The best fit depends on whether you know the app’s name, how often you use it, and whether you prefer the keyboard or mouse. Microsoft documents these routes but does not quantify how much time they save.

Choose a route that fits how you use apps

Route Best fit Navigation
Search You know the app’s name and open it occasionally Keyboard, then choose a result
Taskbar pin You open a small set of apps frequently Mouse or taskbar interaction
Run You know an app command, or want to reach the installed-apps list Keyboard
Apps folder desktop shortcut You prefer a persistent desktop icon Keyboard to open the folder; mouse to create the shortcut

These are practical workflow choices, not a measured speed ranking. Microsoft Support describes keyboard tricks as potentially faster, but publishes no timing comparison for these app-launch methods.

Search for an app by name

  1. Press Windows+S to open Search.
  2. Type the app’s name.
  3. Select the matching result to launch it.

This avoids browsing a list when you remember what the app is called. Microsoft’s keyboard guidance documents Windows shortcuts, and its taskbar guidance describes finding and pinning apps.

Pin recurring apps to the taskbar

  1. Search for the app and right-click its result.
  2. Choose Pin to taskbar.
  3. Drag pinned icons to arrange them in the order you prefer.

A pin keeps a frequently used app available from the taskbar without searching for its name each time. Exact menu details can vary by Windows version; Microsoft’s taskbar customization instructions cover Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Use a taskbar jump list when reopening work

Right-click an app’s taskbar icon to see a jump list, if that app provides one. It can show recent files or common app actions, which is useful when the goal is to return to a document or task rather than open the app to a blank starting point.

Open apps through Run or the Apps folder

Run a known command

Press Windows+R to open Run. Enter the app’s command or executable name if you know it, then press Enter. This is a keyboard-based route; it depends on knowing a command Windows can resolve.

Open the installed-apps list

  1. Press Windows+R.
  2. Type shell:AppsFolder and press Enter.
  3. Find and open the installed app in the Apps folder.

Microsoft documents Run and this Apps folder command in its Windows keyboard shortcuts guidance.

Create a desktop shortcut from the Apps folder

  1. Open the Apps folder with Windows+R, then enter shell:AppsFolder.
  2. Right-click the app you want.
  3. Select Create shortcut and follow any prompt Windows displays.

This gives you a desktop icon to launch that app with a double-click. It suits users who prefer a visible shortcut over Search or a taskbar pin.
