Kindle collections are named groupings that help you organize books and documents in your library. Create a collection, give it a useful name, and add eligible items; the exact menu labels vary by Kindle model and software. Collection membership organizes your library but does not, by itself, download books to a device.

What Kindle collections do

Amazon describes collections as folders you create to organize your library and find Kindle books and documents. They group library items under a name you choose. For example, you might make one collection for mysteries, another for books you plan to read, or a list for a book club. Collections help you locate titles; they are not themselves books or downloads.

It is useful to think of two separate questions when organizing a Kindle library: “Where do I want this title grouped?” and “Is this title downloaded to this device?” A collection answers the first question. It does not guarantee the book is stored locally for offline reading. Amazon provides a separate command to download a collection’s items to a Kindle e-reader.

Collections also differ by type. Cloud Collections may be available on supported devices and apps linked to the same Amazon account. Amazon’s help material also refers to legacy Local Collections, which are available only on the device where they were created. Those differences affect where you can find a collection, so a collection created on one device is not automatically guaranteed to appear in every Kindle app or e-reader.

Create a collection on a Kindle e-reader

The current Kindle Aluminum (2026 release) user guide documents creating a collection from the library and selecting items. Other Kindle generations may use different menu names or put the command in a different location. The sequence below describes the general task, not a universal button-by-button path.

  1. Open your Library. Find the library menu or collection controls. Depending on the model and software, these may appear in a menu or toolbar. If the library looks different from these descriptions, look in the model-specific guide rather than assuming the feature is absent.
  2. Choose “Create New Collection.” The current guide uses this command. If your Kindle has a different label, look for the option to create a collection or group. Amazon publishes separate collection instructions for different platforms, including Kindle for Windows, so a desktop or app interface may not match the e-reader sequence.
  3. Enter a name. Choose a name that will still make sense when you return to your library later. “Mystery,” “To Read,” and a series name are straightforward examples. If you are deciding between several possible systems, start with the categories you actually use to search for titles.
  4. Select eligible books or documents. Choose the library items you want grouped together. Amazon describes collections as a way to organize books and documents, but availability and supported content can depend on the platform. The current guide’s collection flow includes selecting library items; it does not require treating the collection itself as a download.
  5. Save or confirm. Complete the on-screen confirmation. The collection should then be available in your library’s collection view. The exact confirmation label and where the collection appears can vary with model and software.

If you cannot find the create command, first confirm which device or app you are using and consult its specific Amazon instructions. Menu names from a newer e-reader may not apply to an older Kindle, while an app may have its own collection workflow. Do not infer from a different platform’s screen that your own device supports the same feature in the same way.

Add or remove books after creating a collection

You do not have to settle the contents of a collection when you first create it. To change it later, open the collection from the library and use the available edit, manage, or add-items command. Wording and placement differ across devices and apps, so follow the on-screen collection controls rather than relying on a single button label from another Kindle model.

When adding titles, select the library items that belong in that group and confirm the change. To take an item out, use the collection’s editing or management controls and deselect or remove the item if that option is available on your platform. If the goal is to remove one title from a group, use those controls rather than deleting the whole collection. That keeps the collection itself available for the other titles you have grouped there.

Amazon’s Paperwhite documentation describes Cloud Collections and permits a book to belong to more than one collection. That makes it possible, on supported platforms, to group a title by both topic and reading status—for example, “Science Fiction” and “To Read.” This multiple-membership behavior is documented for Cloud Collections on the Paperwhite; platform support and terminology can vary. If you do not see a way to add a title to more than one collection, check the instructions for your device rather than assuming the Paperwhite behavior is universal.

Choose a system you can keep using

Collections are most useful when their names answer the question you will have while browsing. Pick a manageable set of categories that match how you look for books, then add more only when they solve a real finding problem. A good name is one you can recognize quickly, not necessarily a comprehensive description of every characteristic of a book.

  • By genre or subject: “History,” “Mystery,” or “Cooking” can help when you know what kind of book you want to browse.
  • By author or series: This can be useful when you own several titles and want to locate them together. A series name is a clear example when the series is what you remember.
  • By reading status: “To Read,” “Reading,” or “Finished” separates titles by where they are in your reading process.
  • By purpose: “Book Club” or the name of a particular reading list can gather books for a shared or planned activity.

Because a title may belong to more than one Cloud Collection on supported devices, you can combine approaches instead of forcing every title into a single category. A book can be grouped by genre and status, for instance, if your platform supports multiple membership. That can be more useful than making a very specific collection for every title.

Before creating a collection, ask whether you are likely to look for its contents together. If the answer is yes, a distinct collection may help. If a category contains only one book and is unlikely to grow, it may be simpler to use a broader genre, author, series, or reading-status group. This is a practical organizing choice rather than an Amazon rule; choose the structure that fits your own library.

Keep names recognizable and avoid making the system depend on distinctions you will not remember. For example, if you want separate lists for books to read soon and books you might read someday, name them so the difference is obvious. You can also use a purpose-based collection for a club list while retaining a genre collection for browsing, where supported. The point is not to create the largest possible number of collections, but to make the titles easier to find again.

Collections and downloads are separate

Adding a title to a collection organizes it; it does not guarantee that the title is stored on the e-reader for offline reading. A collection can help you group library items without downloading each one. For example, putting a book in “To Read” tells you how you have organized it; it does not, on its own, confirm that the book is present on the device.

Amazon provides a separate “Download all items” action for downloading a collection’s contents to a Kindle e-reader. Use that action if you want the collection’s items downloaded to the e-reader, then check that the items finish downloading. Organizing and downloading are distinct operations: if you only create a collection, do not assume all its books are now available offline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This distinction is useful when planning a reading list before travel or when deciding what to keep on an e-reader. The collection is the grouping; the download action is the step Amazon identifies for bringing the collection’s items to the device. If an item is not available to download through the collection action, consult the relevant device or platform help rather than assuming collection membership has changed its availability.

Understand collection syncing

Cloud collection syncing depends on collection type and whether the device or app supports the feature. Amazon’s older Kindle Paperwhite guide says Cloud Collections sync to supported devices and apps registered to the same Amazon account. The same guide describes them this way: “Cloud Collections enable you to organize the content on your Kindle Paperwhite into customized categories that are stored in the Cloud.” That wording comes from an older, model-specific Amazon guide; it explains Cloud Collections but should not be taken as a promise that every current Kindle app uses the same term or supports the feature.

Amazon’s help material distinguishes cloud collections from legacy Local Collections. A legacy Local Collection is available only on the device where it was created. This is the key comparison if you expect a collection to appear elsewhere: cloud status and platform support matter, while a local collection is device-specific. A collection can be useful on the device where it exists even if it is not available across your other devices.

If a collection is missing on another device, check whether both devices or apps are registered to the same Amazon account. Then consider whether the collection is a supported cloud collection or a legacy local one, and whether the destination platform supports collection syncing. These checks address the distinctions Amazon documents; exact settings and instructions vary, so use the help page for the specific device or app when you need platform steps.

  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.

Do not assume every Kindle app, desktop application, or e-reader supports every collection type. Amazon has platform-specific collection information, and its older Paperwhite documentation limits syncing to devices and apps that support Cloud Collections. If a collection does not appear, that alone does not establish that the title is missing from your library or that you created it incorrectly. First distinguish the collection’s type and the platform’s support from the separate question of whether an individual book is downloaded.

Delete a collection carefully

Before deleting, consider whether the collection is cloud-based and whether you intend the change to extend beyond the device in front of you. Amazon’s Kindle Aluminum (2026 release) guide warns that deleting a collection created on a device or supported reading app can delete it from the cloud and from other supported devices and apps registered to the same account. The cross-device scope is important: deletion may not be limited to the screen where you issue the command.

Use the device’s collection menu and delete command only when you intend that broader removal. Because the exact menu wording varies, consult the current guide for your model or app if you are uncertain which command deletes the collection. If you are trying to change what is inside the collection rather than remove the collection itself, choose an edit or manage control instead.

Deleting a collection is different from removing one book from it. If you want to keep the grouping but change its contents, use the collection’s edit or manage controls. If you want the collection itself gone, pause to consider the cloud and other supported devices or apps associated with the same account before confirming. The available evidence supports caution about collection deletion; it does not justify assuming that every platform handles every legacy local collection identically.

Quick checks when something does not work as expected

  • The collection command is missing: Check the model- or platform-specific Amazon guide. Menu locations and labels vary, and the current Kindle Aluminum guide is not a universal interface map.
  • The collection does not appear elsewhere: Check that the other device or app uses the same Amazon account, then verify that the collection is cloud-based and that the destination supports collection syncing.
  • The collection appears but a book is not available offline: Remember that organizing does not guarantee a download. Use Amazon’s separate “Download all items” action for a collection on an e-reader and verify the download completes.
  • You want to remove one title, not the whole group: Use edit or manage controls to change the collection’s contents instead of selecting delete collection.

These checks separate the most common issues into three different questions: which platform and menu you are using, whether the collection can sync, and whether the book has been downloaded. Keeping those questions separate makes the next step clearer and avoids treating an organization feature as if it also controlled device storage or universal syncing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are Kindle collections?

They are named groupings Amazon provides to organize books and documents in your Kindle library and make them easier to find. Depending on collection type and platform support, a collection may be cloud-based or a legacy local collection available only on the device where it was created.

How do I add books to a Kindle collection?

Open the collection from your library and use the available edit, manage, or add-items control. Select the library items you want to include and confirm. The exact label and menu location vary by Kindle model, app, and software.

Do Kindle collections sync across devices?

Cloud Collections sync only across devices and apps that support the feature and are registered to the same Amazon account. Legacy Local Collections are available only on the device where they were created, so syncing is not guaranteed for every collection or platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does adding a book to a collection download it?

No. Collection membership organizes a library item but does not by itself guarantee that it is stored on the e-reader. Amazon provides a separate “Download all items” action for downloading a collection’s contents to a Kindle e-reader.

If I delete a collection, will it disappear from my other Kindle devices?

It may. Amazon’s current Kindle Aluminum guide warns that deleting a collection created on a device or supported reading app can remove it from the cloud and other supported devices and apps registered to the same account. Check the collection type and intended scope before confirming deletion.

The Bottom Line

Use Kindle collections to group library books and documents under names that match how you browse. Create or edit them through your device’s collection controls, keeping in mind that menu labels vary. Cloud syncing depends on collection type, account, and platform support; downloading is a separate action, and deleting a collection can affect other supported devices on the same account.
