To improve your chances of appearing in Google Search, including AI Overviews and AI Mode, make your important pages accessible to Google, eligible to appear with a Search snippet, and genuinely useful to readers. Then monitor performance in Search Console and improve what you find. Google describes AI Search features as part of its existing Search systems: there is no guaranteed formula or special AI-only optimization that ensures a page will be included.
How Google Search and AI answers relate
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems. AI Overviews are designed to help with complicated questions; AI Mode supports further exploration, reasoning, and comparisons. For site owners, the practical implication is that sound Search optimization remains the foundation rather than a separate AI playbook.

A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in these AI features. That eligibility is a gateway, not a promise: Google does not guarantee that it will crawl, index, serve, or select any particular page.
What to do, in the order that matters
1. Make sure Google can access important pages
Start with the pages you most want people to find. Check that Google can crawl them and that your robots.txt rules, hosting setup, or content delivery network (CDN) are not blocking access. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to investigate an individual URL and identify reported indexing or access issues. Fix the cause first; submitting or inspecting a URL does not itself guarantee indexing.

2. Check whether pages are indexed and snippet-eligible
Use Search Console to review indexing status and diagnose problems. The goal is not merely to see a URL listed somewhere: it must be indexed and eligible to appear with a Search snippet to qualify as a supporting link in AI Search features. Treat this as a prerequisite to address, not a way to force an AI appearance.
3. Publish information that gives readers a reason to visit
Google recommends creating helpful, satisfying content for people. A page is more valuable when it contributes something beyond widely available, interchangeable information—for example, clear expert explanation, original analysis, or useful detail that addresses the reader’s actual question. Do not rewrite pages into an imagined “AI style”; Google says a special AI-focused rewrite is not required.

4. Help people and crawlers find related pages
Use a clear site structure and descriptive internal links so visitors can navigate to relevant material and Google can discover pages and understand their relationships. Descriptive URLs can help people interpret a result. A sitemap may help Google discover URLs in some situations, but it is not a universal requirement and does not guarantee indexing.

Keep the page’s essential explanation in text rather than relying on an image, video, or other embedded format alone. Add high-quality images or video when they help explain the subject or improve the page for visitors. Semantic HTML can support readability and accessibility, but perfect markup is not a prerequisite for Google Search eligibility.

6. Use structured data accurately
Structured data can make a page eligible for certain ordinary Search rich results when it is valid and matches information visible to users on the page. It is not a special ticket into AI Overviews or AI Mode. Add it only when it accurately describes the page and serves an applicable Search feature.
7. Review performance and make targeted changes
Use Search Console to monitor technical issues and Search performance. Google says traffic from AI features is included in the overall Web search performance reporting; the documentation does not establish that every AI-feature visit can be isolated as a separate site-level measure. Look for patterns in your own pages and queries, then make changes tied to an identified problem or reader need.
What not to treat as an AI ranking requirement
Google says site owners do not need special AI files or formatting to appear in its generative Search features. In particular, it says:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- No llms.txt file is required: Google says it ignores llms.txt for Search ranking and visibility.
- No special AI schema is required: ordinary structured data can still matter for applicable rich results, but Google does not require schema specifically for generative AI Search.
- No tiny-content-chunk requirement exists: there is no requirement to divide a page into small chunks for these features.
- No AI-only writing style is required: do not rewrite useful content just to make it sound like a prompt or an AI answer.
These points concern Google Search. They should not be stretched into claims about how other search engines or AI services select content.

How to interpret AI visibility and traffic claims
Google reported in 2026 that AI Overviews had more than 2.5 billion monthly active users and AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users. These are Google-reported platform figures, not independent measurements of a website’s likely reach or traffic. Google also said AI visibility insights had rolled out to all websites worldwide as of August 31, 2026. Search Console’s interface can change, so check the current product before relying on a specific report or control.
In a Google post dated August 6, 2025, Liz Reid, Google’s VP and Head of Search, said that “Overall, total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year,” and that average click quality had increased. This is Google’s aggregate company-reported observation; it does not show that traffic was stable for every site, topic, or publisher, nor does it predict an individual site’s results.
A practical optimization checklist
- Identify the pages that matter most to your audience.
- Check crawl access and use Search Console’s URL Inspection to diagnose individual URLs.
- Review whether those pages are indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet.
- Improve content where it is thin, interchangeable, hard to use, or missing useful expertise.
- Make key information available in text; use media to support it where appropriate.
- Improve internal links and organization where they help readers navigate.
- Keep structured data accurate and aligned with visible page content.
- Monitor Search Console performance and technical reports, then prioritize fixes based on your own site’s evidence.
Google’s Search Central documentation, including its SEO Starter Guide last updated December 10, 2025, is the reference point for eligibility and site guidance. Its guidance supports a straightforward strategy: make useful pages accessible and clear, and do not mistake eligibility or platform-wide AI figures for a guarantee of visibility or visits.
