If your iPhone or iPad is stuck on the “Connect to computer” or Restore screen, first try the force-restart sequence for your model. If it returns to that screen, connect it directly to a Mac or PC and choose Update in the computer app—not Restore—as the first software repair. Update reinstalls iOS or iPadOS while keeping personal data; Restore erases the device.
1. Try a force restart using the right buttons
A force restart attempts to start the device normally; it is not the same as entering recovery mode. The button sequence depends on your iPhone generation or whether your iPad has a Home button. Hold the final button or buttons until the Apple logo appears.

iPhone 8 or later, including iPhone SE (2nd generation or later)
- Quickly press and release Volume Up.
- Quickly press and release Volume Down.
- Hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 Plus
- Hold the Side (or Top) button and Volume Down together until the Apple logo appears.
iPhone 6s or earlier, including iPhone SE (1st generation)
- Hold the Home button and Side (or Top) button together until the Apple logo appears.
iPad without a Home button
- Quickly press and release the volume button closest to the Top button.
- Quickly press and release the volume button furthest from the Top button.
- Hold the Top button until the Apple logo appears.
iPad with a Home button
- Hold the Home and Top buttons together until the Apple logo appears.
If the Restore or Connect to computer screen remains, move to the computer-assisted update. Apple’s recovery instructions describe the model-specific button holds for entering recovery mode if you need to repeat that step later: iPhone recovery instructions, iPad recovery instructions and Restore screen instructions.
2. Connect to a computer and choose Update
- Open the appropriate app. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, use Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave or earlier, Apple’s instructions use iTunes. On a PC, use the current Apple Devices app or iTunes as applicable. Update the computer first if software updates are available.
- Connect the device directly. Use a USB cable connected to the computer, not a keyboard or USB hub. Open the device in Finder, Apple Devices or iTunes when it appears.
- Choose Update. If prompted to Update or Restore, select Update first if you have not already tried it. Apple says Update reinstalls the system while keeping personal data.
- Leave the device connected. Wait for the download and installation to finish. If the download takes more than 15 minutes, the device may leave the recovery screen; let the download finish, then repeat the recovery connection steps.

3. Use Restore only when appropriate
Restore reinstalls iOS or iPadOS and erases all data on the device. Treat it as the last software step after an Update attempt, or use it when Apple’s instructions for your situation specifically call for Restore. If you restore, set up the device again and recover your information from a backup if one is available. Apple states that “Restore reinstalls iOS and erases all your data” in its iPhone and iPod touch recovery guidance.
4. Troubleshoot computer and connection errors
Apple says errors 9, 4005, 4013 and 4014 may appear if the device disconnects during an update or the computer loses its connection during a restore. Try these connection checks before repeating the recovery process:

- Connect the device to a USB port on the computer rather than through a hub; try another port.
- Try another USB cable. Connector types vary by device, so verify that the cable fits your model and supports a data connection.
- Restart both the computer and device, then try again.
- Check whether security software is interfering with the connection.
- Try another computer on a different network if the error continues.
- Update the computer’s software and retry Update in the recovery flow.

Apple’s page published September 24, 2026 says iOS Recovery is available on iOS 27. It may start after an incomplete update or restore, or when the device detects a stability issue. These options should not be assumed to exist on older iOS versions or every device.

Contact Apple Support or arrange service if Update or Restore fails, the Restore screen keeps returning after the restart and reinstall steps, or a required button is broken or stuck. For errors 9, 4005, 4013 or 4014, Apple recommends contacting support if the connection troubleshooting does not resolve the problem.
