Optimize Paper by measuring the actual bottleneck first, then changing the smallest relevant group of settings. Start with view and simulation distance for excessive chunk work, use entity activation ranges for distant mob ticking, tune chunk saving only when storage or save saturation is visible, and reserve redstone, explosion, hopper, TNT, and anti-xray changes for workloads that justify their mechanical trade-offs.

What “lag” means on a Paper server
Lag is not one failure mode. A server can miss its tick budget because too many entities are being simulated, spend bursts of time generating or loading chunks, stall while saving chunks to disk, or appear slow only because a client is rendering more terrain than its hardware can handle. The fix depends on which of those workloads is dominant.

Paper’s configuration can reduce work, but every reduction has a visible or mechanical cost. Lower distances make the world less active around players, activation ranges throttle distant entities, save limits spread disk work across ticks, and hopper or TNT limits can change how contraptions behave. Treat configuration as workload control rather than as a universal “optimized” preset.
Know which Paper file controls each setting
Paper uses layered configuration. Keep shared policy in the shared files and use a world-specific file only for an intentional exception. Paper’s documented inheritance guidance is explicit: you do not need to copy the complete defaults file into every world file. Copy only the value you want to override; all other values continue to come from the defaults.

| File | Scope | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
config/paper-global.yml |
Server-wide | Controls that should apply consistently across the server, regardless of world. |
config/paper-world-defaults.yml |
Shared world defaults | The baseline for worlds that do not define their own exception. |

One world | A deliberate override, such as a farm-heavy survival world or a protected event map. |
server.properties |
Vanilla server properties | Core server settings such as configured view and simulation distances. |
spigot.yml |
Spigot-derived controls | Targeted hopper timing and TNT-per-tick safeguards, among other Spigot settings. |
Settings can inherit a default value rather than being repeated in every file. Paper’s references document default and -1 inheritance behavior for the relevant world settings. If a world should match the common policy, leave it inherited. If it needs a different value, add only that setting to its paper-world.yml and record why.
Measure before changing values
Use Paper or Spigot timings to identify what is consuming server performance before tuning. A timings report can show whether the pressure comes from entities, block activity, redstone, chunk operations, or plugins. A low client frame rate is a different problem from a server that cannot complete its ticks on time, so ask players whether they see low frames, delayed actions, rubber-banding, or periodic pauses.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Tick lag: actions arrive late, entities stutter, or the server cannot maintain its target tick rate.
- Chunk-generation or loading spikes: lag appears when players explore, teleport, or load new areas.
- Saving stalls: pauses coincide with autosaves or heavy world changes.
- Client rendering limits: one player struggles while the server’s tick health remains normal.
Take a baseline while the reported problem is occurring. Note the Paper and Minecraft versions, online player count, worlds involved, recent teleports or exploration, and active farms. Without that baseline, a setting change can appear to help simply because the workload changed at the same time.
Set view distance and simulation distance for different jobs
view-distance controls how much world data is configured to be visible and sent around players. simulation-distance controls how far game simulation continues. Lowering either can reduce work, but they affect different experiences: view distance changes how far players can see, while simulation distance changes how far entities and systems remain active.

| Setting | Primary workload affected | Player-visible trade-off | When to test it |
|---|---|---|---|
view-distance |
Chunk transmission and the amount of terrain maintained for visibility. | A shorter visible horizon and less terrain available around a player. | When network/chunk transmission or broad loaded terrain is the measured pressure. |
simulation-distance |
Entity and world-system ticking around players. | Farther-away farms, mobs, and systems stop updating sooner. | When tick time is dominated by active entities or systems rather than rendering. |
Change one distance at a time, preferably in the affected world first. Observe exploration, teleporting, farm behavior, and player sightlines before applying a server-wide policy. Do not assume that lowering view distance fixes entity-heavy ticks, or that lowering simulation distance fixes disk latency; those are different workloads.
Use entity activation ranges selectively
Paper provides activation ranges for categories including animals, monsters, raiders, miscellaneous entities, water mobs, villagers, and flying monsters. Entities outside the configured range tick less frequently, reducing CPU work when large numbers of distant entities are loaded.
This is most useful when timings show that entity ticking is the bottleneck. Apply it by category rather than lowering every range indiscriminately. For example, a world with many hostile mobs may need a different adjustment from a world whose cost comes from villagers or water-based farms.
- Check whether the affected category is actually responsible for the tick time.
- Test normal gameplay, mob farms, trading areas, and transport systems after the change.
- Explain to players that distant entities may update less often, especially outside the active area.
Paper warns that throttling can make dropped items in water streams appear to lag, rubber-band, or move backward. That visual behavior is a side effect of reduced ticking, not proof that the item has been lost. If a transport system relies on smooth remote updates, restore a wider range for the relevant entity behavior or isolate the farm in a world with a different override.

Control chunk loading, unloading, and saving only for the observed bottleneck
Paper’s world configuration includes controls for chunk unload delay, minimum unload counts, and the maximum number of chunks automatically saved per tick. These settings address different pressures:
- Unload delay: how long unused chunks remain before being unloaded. A longer delay can reduce repeated load/unload churn but retains more memory.
- Minimum unload counts: how unloading is batched. Changing batching can alter how quickly unused chunks leave memory and how much work is performed in a cycle.
- Maximum auto-save chunks per tick: how much save work is allowed in one tick. A lower cap can reduce a single large pause but may spread saving over more time.
Match the control to the symptom. If players repeatedly move through the same area and timings show chunk churn, examine unload behavior. If memory pressure grows because many chunks remain resident, retaining chunks longer may be counterproductive. If pauses line up with saves and storage latency is high, limiting chunks saved per tick can smooth individual ticks, but it does not remove the disk work; it distributes it.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not change all three controls together. Record memory use, chunk counts, save duration, and tick health before and after each related test. A setting that improves one metric while causing memory growth or delayed saves is not a complete fix.
Reduce redstone and explosion work without changing mechanics accidentally
Paper’s world settings document alternate redstone implementations and the optimize-explosions option. They are targeted at servers where redstone updates or explosion calculations appear in performance reports.

Alternate redstone implementations
An alternate implementation can reduce CPU work in redstone-heavy builds, but it may not reproduce every edge case of the vanilla implementation. Before enabling one, identify the redstone contraptions that matter to players and test clocks, pistons, observers, farms, and plugin-controlled circuits. If a build depends on a particular update order, a faster implementation that changes that order is not a safe drop-in replacement.
optimize-explosions
Enable explosion optimization only when explosions are a measured source of tick cost. Test TNT machines, creeper farms, block drops, protection plugins, and any build that depends on exact blast behavior. Keep a rollback copy because an optimization that changes calculation work can expose assumptions in plugins or contraptions.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Tune hoppers and TNT in spigot.yml
spigot.yml documents hopper check timing, hopper transfer timing, and max-tnt-per-tick. These are focused safeguards rather than general lag switches.
| Control | Workload targeted | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hopper check timing | How often hoppers check for items or inventories. | Less checking can reduce item-transport CPU work but may make collection behavior less immediate. |
| Hopper transfer timing | How often hoppers move items. | Lower throughput changes sorting, storage, and farm rates. |
max-tnt-per-tick |
Limits TNT processing in a single tick. | Large TNT machines may run more slowly or no longer behave as designed. |
Use measured limits. A copied “optimized” preset can silently break item sorters, bulk storage, or TNT-based machinery. Test the fastest legitimate contraptions on the server, monitor tick health during their operation, and make the smallest change that addresses the observed spike.

Do not treat anti-xray as a universal lag fix
Anti-xray settings are available in Paper’s world configuration. Their primary purpose is to reduce information exposure by hiding or obfuscating blocks from clients, not to solve every form of server lag. Depending on the configuration and workload, anti-xray processing can add work.
Choose anti-xray behavior from the server’s threat model and then measure its cost during mining, exploration, and chunk delivery. If anti-xray is required, profile it as part of the normal workload. If the problem is entity ticking or disk saves, changing anti-xray will not address that bottleneck.

A safe, repeatable optimization procedure
- Back up worlds and configuration. Keep a restorable copy before editing any YAML,
server.properties, orspigot.ymlfile. - Record versions. Write down the Paper build and Minecraft version. Option names, defaults, and configuration versions can change between releases.
- Capture a baseline. Use timings while the problem is visible, and note tick health, loaded chunks, memory, disk latency, player count, and the affected world.
- Classify the bottleneck. Decide whether the evidence points to visibility, simulation, entity activation, chunk churn, saving, redstone, explosions, hoppers, TNT, or another workload.
- Choose the narrowest scope. Put a shared policy in
paper-world-defaults.yml; use a world-specificpaper-world.ymloverride when only one world needs it. Use global settings only when the behavior truly belongs server-wide. - Change one related group. For example, test simulation distance alone before changing activation ranges, or test save pacing without simultaneously changing unload behavior.
- Restart or reload using the method appropriate to the setting. Confirm in the startup or configuration output that the intended value was accepted; do not assume a malformed YAML edit took effect.
- Reproduce the workload. Revisit the area, run the farm, perform the teleport, or wait through the save interval that previously triggered lag.
- Check side effects. Verify sightlines, farm rates, redstone timing, hopper throughput, TNT behavior, entity movement, memory, and disk activity.
- Keep a change log. Record the old value, new value, date, affected world, evidence, and rollback decision. If the result is worse, restore the previous value rather than stacking another unverified change.
Choose settings by symptom
| Observed symptom | First settings to investigate | What to verify after changing them |
|---|---|---|
| Lag follows players exploring or teleporting into new terrain | View distance, chunk loading behavior, and unload controls. | Chunk load time, memory use, and whether repeated travel still causes spikes. |
| Tick time rises in mob- or villager-heavy areas | Simulation distance and the relevant entity activation category. | Mob behavior, villager interactions, farm output, and distant entity updates. |
| Pauses coincide with world saves | Maximum auto-save chunks per tick and storage performance. | Save duration, disk latency, and whether pauses are merely spread across more ticks. |
| Large redstone builds consume the tick budget | Alternate redstone implementation, after compatibility testing. | Update order, piston and observer behavior, and plugin-integrated circuits. |
| Explosions or TNT machines create spikes | optimize-explosions and max-tnt-per-tick. |
Blast results, machine throughput, protection behavior, and tick health. |
| Item transport dominates timings | Hopper check and transfer timing. | Sorter correctness, collection delay, storage throughput, and farm rates. |
| Players report items moving backward in water | Relevant entity activation range. | Whether throttling is affecting dropped-item updates outside active ranges. |
Validate the result instead of chasing a single number
There is no authoritative universal percentage improvement for these settings. Paper’s references describe defaults and behavior, not a benchmark that applies to every server. Compare your own before-and-after measurements under comparable player counts and workloads.
- Tick health: Did the same workload complete within the tick budget?
- Chunk behavior: Are loading and unloading spikes lower, and are chunks being retained too long?
- Memory: Did reduced churn come at the cost of unbounded resident chunks?
- Disk activity: Are saves smoother, or merely delayed?
- Player experience: Are visibility, entity responsiveness, farms, and contraptions still acceptable?
- Plugin compatibility: Did any plugin assume vanilla redstone, explosion, hopper, or entity timing?
If a change improves the report but creates a mechanic problem, narrow its scope to a dedicated world or revert it. A stable server that preserves the mechanics players rely on is better than a lower timing number achieved by breaking core gameplay.
Keep the configuration maintainable
Use the defaults file as the documented baseline and keep world exceptions minimal. Full-file copies create drift: when Paper adds or changes a setting, a copied world file can hide the new default and make troubleshooting harder. A short override also makes it obvious which workload justified the exception.
Review settings after Paper or Minecraft upgrades. Reconfirm option names, inheritance behavior, and configuration versions, then rerun the same baseline workload. Recheck farms and plugins whenever you alter mechanics-sensitive settings, especially redstone, explosions, hoppers, TNT, and entity activation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line
The reliable path to lower lag is diagnosis, narrow intervention, and verification. Measure first; separate view distance from simulation distance; use activation ranges for measured entity pressure; tune chunk saves only for chunk or storage symptoms; and treat redstone, explosion, hopper, TNT, and anti-xray controls as specialized tools with explicit trade-offs. Keep shared defaults centralized, override only the world that needs different behavior, and roll back any change that improves metrics by damaging the gameplay your server is meant to provide.
