Windows’ built-in tools address these different issues in different ways; there is no universal NTFS setting that guarantees a speed boost.
Start by identifying the problem
Before changing anything, check whether the volume is an HDD, SSD, or another storage tier, and whether that drive is actually causing the slowdown. Windows’ NTFS and volume commands explain how to analyze, repair, and optimize a volume, but they do not promise a fixed performance gain for every PC.

- Fragmented files or routine maintenance: analyze and optimize the volume with Windows’ built-in tools.
- Errors or warnings about the file system: run an appropriate CHKDSK check before trying to optimize the volume.
- Unexpectedly low capacity or high “size on disk”: investigate how space is being used before considering a format change.
- A new volume dedicated to large files or deduplicated data: evaluate allocation-unit size against the workload and application requirements.
Analyze and optimize a volume
Windows’ defrag command can analyze a volume and consolidate fragmented files. Windows drive optimization can also include retrim where appropriate. Microsoft says a volume needs at least 15% free space for defrag to completely and adequately defragment it; this is guidance for completing defragmentation, not a promise of a particular speed increase. Microsoft’s defrag command documentation describes the available analysis and optimization functions.

- Open Defragment and Optimize Drives from the Windows Start menu.
- Select the volume and choose Analyze if that option is available. Review the result before deciding whether to optimize.
- If optimization is appropriate, select Optimize. For command-line use, consult the documented
defragoptions and target the intended volume.
If Windows marks a volume dirty, do not start a manual defrag blindly. Check the file system with CHKDSK first. The appropriate optimization behavior depends on the volume and storage type; avoid assuming that the same manual operation suits every drive.

Check file-system errors with CHKDSK
chkdsk diagnoses file-system errors; it is not a general-purpose speed-up command. For NTFS, /scan performs an online scan. Repair switches have different effects and may require locking the volume or doing work offline, so select them only when you understand the repair and its implications. Microsoft notes that /perf can use more system resources and negatively affect other tasks while the scan runs. See Microsoft’s CHKDSK documentation for the switches and supported behavior.
If you suspect corruption, begin with a diagnostic scan and review its result before choosing a repair option. Back up important data before repair work, particularly if the drive is failing or the errors are recurring.

Investigate missing capacity before reformatting
A difference between the total size of files and the space Windows reports as used does not automatically mean NTFS is wasting space. Microsoft lists several possible contributors, including cluster size, metadata, permissions, alternate data streams, and corruption. Compare file sizes with “size on disk,” inspect the volume’s properties, and consider the files and workload before changing the format. See Microsoft’s guide to disk-space discrepancies.
Choose allocation-unit size for the workload
An allocation unit (cluster) is the smallest unit of disk space NTFS allocates to a file. Larger clusters can suit some large-file workloads, but can waste space when a volume contains many small files. Microsoft gives a 64 KB (65,536-byte) allocation-unit example for volumes used with Data Deduplication or large files such as VHDX files larger than 1 TB. That example is not a general recommendation for every NTFS volume. Check the needs of the workload and any application constraints; see Microsoft’s Data Deduplication guidance.

Changing allocation-unit size requires reformatting the volume, which erases its contents. Back up the data before reformatting, and restore it only after verifying the new volume’s settings. The possible benefit for a specialized workload must be weighed against that downtime and data-handling risk.
Use NTFS compression for capacity, not as a speed tweak
NTFS compression can reduce the space used by eligible files, but accessing compressed data may reduce performance. It is a capacity tradeoff, not a free optimization. The compact command manages NTFS file and directory compression; check Microsoft’s compact documentation before applying it to a workload. Microsoft’s format documentation states that NTFS compression is unsupported when the allocation-unit size is greater than 4096 bytes; see the format command reference.

Leave NTFS metadata and advanced behavior settings alone by default
The Master File Table (MFT) is core NTFS metadata. NTFS reserves MFT-zone space to help keep MFT growth contiguous. That does not mean ordinary defragmentation tools can move MFT entries, nor does it make routine MFT-zone tuning a general performance fix. Microsoft explains the MFT-zone behavior in its Master File Table documentation.
fsutil behavior exposes specific file-system controls, not a universal set of performance tweaks. Some changes require a restart, and Microsoft discourages disabling certain behaviors. Change a setting only when you have a specific, documented need and understand its effects; consult Microsoft’s fsutil behavior reference.

Match the action to the symptom
| Symptom or goal | Relevant action | Key tradeoff or limit |
|---|---|---|
| Fragmentation or routine volume optimization | Analyze and optimize with Windows drive optimization or documented defrag functions. |
Microsoft says at least 15% free space is needed for complete and adequate defragmentation; a dirty volume needs a CHKDSK check first. |
| Suspected file-system errors | Use CHKDSK to diagnose; choose repair options only after reviewing their effects. | /scan is an online NTFS scan; repair may require locking or offline work, and /perf may affect concurrent tasks. |
| High “size on disk” or unexplained capacity use | Inspect cluster size, metadata, permissions, alternate data streams, and possible corruption. | Do not infer that reformatting is necessary from the discrepancy alone. |
| New volume for large files or deduplicated data | Evaluate whether a larger allocation unit, such as Microsoft’s 64 KB example, fits the workload. | Larger clusters can waste space with smaller files; changing the size requires reformatting and a backup. |
| Capacity pressure on eligible data | Consider NTFS compression and its effect on access performance. | Compression can reduce performance and is unsupported above 4096-byte allocation units. |
