The keyboard-only method depends on your operating system. On Ubuntu, press Alt+F7, reposition the window with the arrow keys, then press Enter to finish or Esc to cancel. On Windows, try Alt+Spacebar and choose Move if that command appears. On a Mac, Apple documents a move command through VoiceOver, not as a general shortcut for every user.
Move a window with the keyboard on Windows
- Make the dialog or app window active. If it is behind another window, switch to it first.
- Press Alt+Spacebar to open the active window’s shortcut menu. Microsoft documents this shortcut in its Windows keyboard shortcuts.
- If the menu contains Move, select it using the menu’s keyboard navigation or its displayed access key. Use the arrow keys to reposition the window, then press Enter to finish.
The Move command is not guaranteed to appear for every dialog or application window; Microsoft’s shortcut list documents the menu shortcut but does not establish Move as a universal option. If it is absent, this route cannot move that window.

Move a window to another monitor
To send the active window to a neighboring monitor rather than adjust its position one arrow-key step at a time, press Windows key+Shift+Left arrow or Windows key+Shift+Right arrow. This is a separate monitor-placement shortcut documented by Microsoft.

Within a dialog, Tab and Shift+Tab move between controls, while Alt+underlined letter invokes a command or selects an option. Arrow keys can select a button when a radio-button group is active. These actions operate the dialog’s contents; they do not move the dialog window itself.

Move a window with the keyboard on Ubuntu
- Make the window active.
- Press Alt+F7 to begin moving it.
- Use the arrow keys to position it, then press Enter to finish. Press Esc to restore its original position.
Ubuntu documents this keyboard-only method in its Move and resize windows guidance. The same page lists Alt+F8 for resizing a window with the keyboard.
Move a window on a Mac with VoiceOver
- Use VoiceOver to navigate to the window you want to move.
- Press VO-Accent (the Accent key may also be called Grave Accent).
- Use the arrow keys to move the window. Apple says number keys 1–9 can quickly place windows or objects in screen regions.
Apple’s VoiceOver instructions for moving and resizing items say VoiceOver indicates when an item cannot be moved. This route requires VoiceOver; it is not a universal macOS keyboard shortcut for users who do not have that feature enabled.

Which method should you try?

Microsoft’s PowerToys Grab And Move feature is not an alternative for a strict keyboard-only task: it requires holding Alt or the Windows key while dragging with the left mouse button. Its documentation also notes that it may not work reliably with some touchpads.
