Optimize a media-heavy progressive web app by measuring real user experience, getting the initial viewport’s critical media on screen quickly, sending less nonessential data up front, and caching only what meaningfully improves the experience. A PWA is still a website: its HTML, CSS, JavaScript, images, video, fonts, and data all affect performance. Service workers and browser storage add control over selected resources and offline behavior, but they do not make oversized or late-discovered media cheap.
Start with user-experience measurements
Use Core Web Vitals to establish a baseline before changing loading or caching behavior. Google’s current guidance defines these good thresholds at the 75th percentile, evaluated separately for mobile and desktop:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
| Metric | What it captures | Good threshold |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | Loading performance: when the largest visible content element is rendered. | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | Responsiveness to user interactions. | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | Visual stability: unexpected movement during loading and use. | 0.1 or less |
These thresholds and measurement guidance are from Google’s Web Vitals article, last updated October 31, 2024. Look at field data where available, rather than treating one local run as representative: results can vary by device, network, route, and user context. Choose the routes and media templates that matter most to users, then use diagnostic tools such as Lighthouse to investigate what is slowing them down. The PWA guidance on assets and data is a useful starting point for thinking about what the app loads and why.

Traditional page-load measurements and SPA route transitions are not the same thing. A web.dev FAQ updated August 11, 2026 says Chrome 151 introduced APIs for measuring Core Web Vitals across SPA route transitions; as of that update, other browser engines did not yet support those APIs. Browser support can change, so check the SPA Core Web Vitals FAQ and the browsers your app supports before relying on route-transition measurements. Do not assume a metric collected at full-page navigation describes every in-app transition.

Find the media that is expensive or discovered too late
Identify the page’s LCP element and inspect when its resource is discovered and what download priority it receives. A prominent image can still arrive late if JavaScript inserts it, a lazy-loading library delays it, or it is only discoverable through external CSS. Where practical, make the critical resource visible in the initial HTML. If it cannot be discovered early enough through normal markup, consider an appropriate preload and verify that it helps rather than competing with other critical resources. See Google’s Largest Contentful Paint guidance, last updated March 31, 2025.
Reserve lazy loading for non-critical content
Do not lazy-load the image that determines initial LCP. Lazy loading is useful for below-the-fold images and other content that is not needed for the initial view; delaying the LCP image can delay the page’s most important visual content. Browser scheduling and available bandwidth are shared, so postponing non-critical requests can give the initial content more room.
Images and video are generally larger than text and can slow other page resources. Supply appropriately sized, web-optimized images instead of full-size print assets, and be deliberate about placing large video near the top of the page. Removing useful media is not automatically the right fix: reduce unnecessary payload and make the loading order intentional. web.dev reports that an image is the LCP element on approximately 80% of web pages, but the source excerpt does not state a year for that figure; treat it as context, not a guarantee about your app. See web.dev’s business-focused Core Web Vitals guidance.

Use a deliberate loading pattern
The PRPL pattern is a useful way to organize loading work: preload resources that would otherwise be discovered late, render the initial route promptly, precache remaining assets where appropriate, and lazy-load other routes and non-critical resources. Treat PRPL as a set of techniques, not a mandatory implementation bundle; choose what fits the page and measure the result. The PRPL guide explains the pattern.
Prioritize resources that affect the first view
Use markup order, preload, and Fetch Priority hints to help the browser identify genuinely critical assets. These techniques influence scheduling; they do not make an asset smaller or guarantee a particular download order in every browser. Avoid assigning high priority indiscriminately, since critical requests still compete for finite bandwidth and browser resources. For details, see web.dev’s Fetch Priority guidance.
Load the rest when it is needed
Defer below-the-fold images and nonessential media, and load route-specific assets when the user approaches or enters the relevant part of the app. Consider whether video is essential to the initial experience; if not, keep it from delaying the page’s main content. Validate the result on the browsers and devices your app supports, because hints and scheduling behavior depend on the browser.

Choose a cache strategy that matches the experience
A service worker can use Cache Storage to make selected responses available later, including when the network is unavailable. Start by identifying the smallest useful set of resources for your intended experience: perhaps the app’s start page, core CSS and JavaScript, interface images, fonts, and data needed for a basic task. Add large media only when it serves a clear product goal, such as making a particular piece of content available offline.

Caching everything during service-worker installation can consume bandwidth and device storage and can leave users with stale content. As web.dev puts it in its PWA caching guide, “Caching unnecessary resources wastes bandwidth and storage space and could cause your app to serve unintended outdated resources.”
Choose when each asset enters the cache
- At installation: Cache a small application shell when making the interface available quickly or offline is important.
- After the first load: Add assets that users are likely to need again without slowing installation.
- On section entry: Cache section-specific resources when users visit that section, rather than making every user download them.
- When the network is idle: Fetch useful optional assets when doing so is less likely to compete with immediate work.
A complete offline copy is not required for every PWA. A useful fallback interface can be a better fit than attempting to cache all media. Decide based on the value of offline access, content freshness, download cost, and storage use; the web platform guidance does not establish a universal page-weight target or offline media quota.

Compare changes with a repeatable loop
- Set a goal: Pick the affected route, device class, and relevant Core Web Vital or loading behavior.
- Locate a bottleneck: Check the LCP element, when its resource is discovered, competing requests, image dimensions, and main-thread work.
- Change one thing: For example, resize an oversized image, move a critical image into initial markup, or defer below-the-fold media.
- Measure again: Compare field metrics and diagnostic results under comparable conditions; separate mobile and desktop where possible.
- Keep or revise: Assess the performance change alongside freshness, offline usefulness, bandwidth, storage, and supported-browser behavior.
When comparing valid approaches, check initial LCP and critical-resource discovery, bytes and competing requests in the first viewport, INP and main-thread work after media appears, and CLS while images or video load. Also weigh repeat-visit speed against cache invalidation risk, offline value against bandwidth and storage cost, and browser coverage for the APIs and hints you use. Set budgets from your app’s audience and measurements rather than borrowing a universal number.

Troubleshoot common media-performance problems
The main image appears late despite being above the fold
- Confirm that the image is the LCP element and inspect when the browser discovers its URL.
- Check whether JavaScript, CSS, or a lazy-loading mechanism delays discovery.
- Make the resource discoverable in initial markup where practical; consider preload only when normal discovery is too late.
- Ensure the image is not marked lazy-loaded if it is the LCP image, then remeasure.
Later content downloads too early
- Apply lazy loading to below-the-fold images and defer non-critical media.
- Review eager preloads and high-priority hints; remove hints from assets that are not genuinely critical.
- Check whether the app fetches media for routes or sections the user has not opened.
Repeat visits are fast but content is outdated
- Review which responses the service worker stores and when they are refreshed or replaced.
- Remove assets from the cache that do not contribute to the chosen offline experience.
- Test both fresh-install and repeat-visit behavior so a speed improvement does not conceal stale content.
The page shifts when an image or video loads
- Inspect the element’s layout before and after its media arrives.
- Reserve the intended display space so content below it does not jump during loading.
- Check CLS again after the change, including on routes with different media dimensions.
Local results do not match field performance
- Compare like with like: the same route and device class, and similar test conditions.
- Use field data to understand real users’ experience and diagnostics to investigate likely causes.
- For SPAs, distinguish full-page loads from route transitions and verify that the measurement approach is supported by the browser in question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should every media-heavy PWA provide a full offline mode?
No. A focused offline interface or fallback can be more useful than downloading and maintaining a complete media library.
Is a preload or high Fetch Priority hint a guarantee that an asset downloads first?
No. These mechanisms influence browser scheduling; they do not guarantee an ordering across browsers or networks.
