Choose the architecture by deciding how much of the media pipeline your team wants to operate. A managed media service can bundle processing and delivery features; a composable cloud workflow lets you combine storage, encoding or packaging, and a CDN. Neither pattern is universally faster or cheaper: the available provider documentation describes capabilities, not comparable results for your workload.
Start with the work your media pipeline must do
A delivery stack is more than a place to store files. For images, it may need to create responsive sizes, crop or resize assets, and serve a format suited to a visitor’s browser. For video, it may need to accept uploads, encode and package media, and deliver adaptive bitrate streams. Storage, access control, delivery, integration, usage accounting, and ongoing operations also matter.

Write down which of these jobs your site actually needs before comparing vendors. A site that serves a modest image library has different requirements from one that streams live video or maintains a large catalog of transformed assets.

Inventory your workload
- Images: Note the number and types of source images, the sizes your pages need, whether crops vary by page, and whether browser-aware format delivery would help.
- Video: Identify whether you serve on-demand clips, live streams, or both; whether viewers need adaptive quality for different networks and devices; and how uploads enter the system.
- Existing infrastructure: Record where original assets live, which CDN or cloud services you already use, and whether media must remain in a particular storage system.
- Team capacity: Decide which components your team can configure, secure, monitor, and maintain. Separating components can provide control, but also leaves more integration and operations work with your team.
- Usage and billing: Estimate the transformations, stored media, and delivery you expect. Compare those quantities against current provider terms rather than treating a feature list as a cost estimate.
Choose between managed media and assembled components
The main architectural distinction is where service boundaries sit. Managed offerings document multiple media capabilities within a service. A composable workflow uses separate services for tasks such as storage, encoding or packaging, and CDN delivery. These are patterns to evaluate, not a ranking of providers.

| Approach | What the documentation shows | What to examine before choosing |
|---|---|---|
| Managed media service | Cloudinary documents image delivery and transformations, as well as video optimization and adaptive bitrate streaming. Cloudflare says Stream handles video upload, encoding, and adaptive bitrate delivery. | Which steps are actually included, how they integrate with your existing origins and applications, how access to originals and transformed media works, and how usage is counted. |
| Composable cloud workflow | AWS describes video workflows that use processing and storage components alongside CloudFront delivery. Its video-on-demand guidance also describes storage such as Amazon S3. | Which services you must connect, configure, secure, and monitor, and whether your team wants ownership of those boundaries. |
These examples come from the providers’ documentation: Cloudinary’s image delivery options, Cloudflare’s media and streaming use case, and AWS guidance for video on demand and live streaming. They illustrate different service boundaries; they do not establish which option fits a particular site.
Evaluate image delivery requirements
Sending an original image unchanged is only one option. A delivery workflow may resize images to the dimensions a page needs, offer responsive variants, and select an image format based on the requesting browser. Those capabilities can reduce unnecessary data transfer, but the outcome depends on the source assets, requested sizes, page design, and provider behavior.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required

Cloudinary documents automatic format selection based on the requesting browser and responsive image delivery. Its documentation also describes image transformations and delivery options. When assessing any service, check whether transformations happen when requested or whether variants must be prepared in advance, and how the service treats the original asset.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUseful questions to ask include:
- Can the delivery layer create the responsive widths and crops your page needs?
- Can it choose a browser-compatible format automatically, and what is the fallback behavior?
- Can you control access to originals as well as transformed versions?
- Does the service work with your current storage or remote image sources?
- Which transformations count toward usage under the current plan?
Cloudinary’s guidance on image optimization and image delivery provides examples of these features. It notes that many transformation features count as transformations under a plan; check the applicable current terms rather than assuming every operation is included or free.

Evaluate video pipeline requirements
Video delivery can involve several separate stages: upload, encoding, packaging, storage, and delivery to a player. Adaptive bitrate streaming is useful when a stream needs to adjust quality to a viewer’s network conditions. Confirm which service handles each stage and what integrations your player or application needs.
Managed video capabilities
Cloudflare says Stream handles video upload, encoding, and adaptive bitrate delivery. Cloudinary documents video optimization and adaptive bitrate streaming. These are useful capability examples, but the cited documentation does not provide a common benchmark for quality, latency, or cost across providers.

Composed video workflows
AWS describes video-on-demand and live workflows that combine processing or packaging with CloudFront delivery; its video-on-demand guidance also describes storage such as Amazon S3. This is a reminder that a CDN is not necessarily the entire video pipeline. If you assemble components, map the path from source media to viewer and identify which service owns each step.

Compare operations, integration, and cost—not just features
A feature checklist is useful only when paired with responsibility and usage questions. For each required capability, determine whether the service provides it, whether it depends on another component, and who will maintain it.
- Architecture and integration: Check whether media stays in your existing object storage or moves into a managed service, and whether your applications can use the delivery URLs and APIs required.
- Access control: Establish how originals and delivered variants are protected, including any access requirements specific to your site.
- Operational ownership: List what your team must configure, monitor, secure, and troubleshoot. Separate storage, processing, and delivery components usually mean more boundaries to own; the exact effort depends on the implementation.
- Usage accounting: Identify billable units such as transformations, storage, and delivery in the current provider terms. Estimate them using your traffic and media mix before comparing plans.
- Failure handling: Decide how your application should behave if uploads, processing, or delivery are delayed or unavailable, and which components provide the signals your team needs to diagnose problems.
The cited documentation does not establish a comparable total cost, performance ranking, or best fit for a specific site. Make a workload-based estimate from current terms and validate the integration against your actual requirements before committing.
A practical selection sequence
- Define the required outcomes. List image sizes and formats, video use cases, access requirements, and the delivery behavior pages and players need.
- Map your current system. Record existing storage, CDN, upload flows, players, and application integrations so you can see what a new service would replace or connect to.
- Mark pipeline ownership. For every stage—upload, transformation or encoding, packaging, storage, and delivery—write down whether a managed service or your team will handle it.
- Compare the relevant capabilities. Use provider documentation to verify the features you need, not just broad product descriptions.
- Estimate usage with current terms. Model the transformations, stored media, and delivery for your own traffic; do not infer a price from feature descriptions alone.
- Check integration and operations. Confirm access controls, application and player compatibility, monitoring needs, and the team’s ability to operate any separate components.
For website screenshots, try ScreenshotNeo first
ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server, not an image or video delivery stack, so it is not a replacement for the media architectures above. If your adjacent need is capturing rendered pages as screenshots or PDFs, its one-request API is an option to try first: ScreenshotNeo returns PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF output. The request can remove known consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each of those steps can be turned off. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents and MCP clients.
For example, this cURL request saves a screenshot of a page as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo’s free plan includes 1,000 screenshots per month with no card required; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for the free plan.
