There is no single switch that stops every kind of vehicle-data use. To reduce or stop collection and sharing, review three separate places: the car’s connectivity and privacy settings, the automaker’s app or account privacy portal, and any optional service that sends driving data to an insurer, dealer, data broker, or another business. The available controls and the features you lose depend on the automaker, model year, connected-service package, country or state, and the service’s own terms.
Use the procedure below as a checklist, then confirm the exact wording in your current owner’s manual, app, and privacy notice. A setting that stops transmission to the automaker is not necessarily the same as a legal request to stop sale or sharing, and neither necessarily deletes information already sent to a third party.

What “opting out” can mean
Vehicle privacy controls address different data flows. Before changing anything, decide which outcome you want:

|---|---|---|
| In-car connectivity or privacy setting | Transmission of selected vehicle, diagnostic, location, trip, crash, or system data from the car | Connected features can become limited or unavailable; the exact result is vehicle-specific |
| Automaker app or account consent | Vehicle-linked data use, sale, sharing, targeted advertising, or connected-service enrollment associated with your account | Remote commands, status reports, navigation, safety assistance, or other services may stop |
| Optional driving-score, safe-driving, or usage-based insurance enrollment | A separate stream sent to an insurer or another service for scoring, pricing, rewards, or analysis | Discounts, rewards, scores, or the service itself may end; the insurer or provider may require a separate request |
| State privacy-rights request | Legal opt-out of sale or sharing, access, correction, or deletion where the law applies | Processing rules and verification differ by jurisdiction; this is not automatically a modem shutoff |
| Data-broker deletion request | Information held by registered data brokers | It does not turn off collection by the automaker or erase every copy held elsewhere |
These controls are complementary, not interchangeable. A broad privacy request may not withdraw consent you gave directly to an insurer, dealer, navigation provider, or driving-score program. Conversely, disabling a modem may stop future transmission while leaving previously collected records subject to the automaker’s retention policy.

Before you change anything: identify your exact setup
- Record the make, model, model year, trim, and market. Menu names and legal rights differ by country and sometimes by state. A 2026 vehicle can present different controls from an otherwise similar 2023 model.
- List every connected service. Include the automaker’s app, roadside or emergency service, remote start and lock, stolen-vehicle assistance, navigation, diagnostics, charging service, dealer portal, and any insurance or safe-driving program.
- Open the current owner’s manual and privacy notice. Use the edition for your vehicle and region. Do not rely on a video or screenshot for another model year; software updates can change labels and available choices.
- Decide what functionality you are willing to lose. Emergency notification, remote access, live traffic, maintenance alerts, vehicle location, and digital keys may depend on the same connection as data transmission.
How to stop your car from sharing driving data
1. Check the automaker’s app or account portal
Sign in to the official account associated with the vehicle. Look for headings such as Privacy, Data Privacy, Connected Services, Vehicle Data, Data Transmission, Sale or Share, or Targeted Advertising. Review each vehicle individually if the account contains more than one.
Toyota’s U.S. Connected Services notice, updated July 1, 2026, illustrates the type of workflow to look for: Toyota app → Account → Data Privacy Portal → select the vehicle. The notice says declining Vehicle Connectivity Consent disables data transmission and removes access to Connected Services. It also says that if a user takes no action, Toyota continues using non-precise location, driving, and vehicle-health data for internal research and analysis while Connected Services remain unavailable. Treat that as Toyota-specific language, not a universal rule for other automakers.
Read the confirmation screen before submitting. A choice labeled “connected services” can cover both data transmission and the feature bundle. A separate “sale/share” choice may restrict transfers to other businesses without disabling every diagnostic or safety function. If the portal offers granular controls, record each selection rather than assuming one master switch covers all categories.
2. Change the vehicle’s own connectivity settings
In the car, open the settings menu and search for Connectivity, Privacy, Data, Communications, or Connected Services. Some vehicles place the controls under a user profile; others require the vehicle to be parked. Typical categories include:
- Precise or approximate location
- Driving behavior, trip logs, or usage statistics
- Diagnostics and vehicle-health reports
- Crash or possible-crash notifications
- Paired-phone or other device communications
- Voice, navigation, or connected-service data
Honda’s vehicle-data policy, published for Canada, lists these kinds of opt-in and opt-out choices and says availability depends on the vehicle. Use it as evidence that controls vary, not as a universal North American menu. U.S. owners should use American Honda’s current privacy choices and the manual for the specific car.

Ford’s connected-car policy says its SYNC Connectivity settings allow owners to change connected-vehicle data preferences. It warns that disconnecting or changing sharing settings can affect connected-service quality or availability. The cited policy is for the United Kingdom, so U.S. owners should verify the equivalent instructions for their market and vehicle before disconnecting anything.
3. Understand what will stop working
Turning off transmission can affect more than advertising. Depending on the vehicle and plan, you may lose or reduce:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Remote lock, unlock, start, climate control, or charging commands
- Live vehicle location and geofencing
- Automatic crash notification or roadside assistance connections
- Live traffic, cloud navigation, or destination transfer
- Maintenance reminders, diagnostic reports, or recall communications delivered through the app
- Digital-key, user-profile, or voice-assistant functions
Toyota explicitly states that declining Vehicle Connectivity Consent disables Connected Services. Ford cautions that service quality or availability can change after a setting is altered. Other automakers may allow individual categories to remain on. Check the confirmation dialog and manual instead of assuming that a privacy choice affects only marketing.
How to opt out of an insurer or other third-party driving program
A driving-score, safe-driving, or usage-based insurance feature is often a separate enrollment. It may receive acceleration, braking, speed, mileage, time-of-day, location, or trip information through the automaker, a mobile app, a plug-in device, or an insurer’s own system.
- Identify who receives the data. Check the program name, insurer, dealer, app publisher, and any separate telematics provider shown in the enrollment terms.
- Open that provider’s account settings. Look for Telematics, Safe Driving, Usage-Based Insurance, Driving Data, or Connected Vehicle. The provider may have a cancellation or withdrawal process independent of the automaker.
- Withdraw consent or cancel enrollment. Ask whether cancellation stops future collection, deletes the score, changes your premium, or merely ends a discount. Keep the provider’s confirmation.
- Review the automaker setting as well. Stopping a third-party program may not stop the automaker’s own collection, and disabling the automaker connection may not cancel an insurer’s separate permission.
No single cross-brand workflow has been established for every insurer integration. Read the exact service terms and contact the provider named in your account. If a dealer enrolled you during a purchase or service visit, ask the dealer which consent was recorded and request a copy of the applicable terms.

Using privacy-rights requests in the United States
California: opt out of sale or sharing
California residents can use the automaker’s official privacy portal to request that a business stop selling or sharing personal information when the law applies. This right is distinct from deleting information. A sale/share opt-out does not necessarily shut off vehicle connectivity, and a deletion request does not necessarily withdraw an optional insurance enrollment.
Recommended Free Tools
California’s privacy regulator has emphasized that “Opting out is supposed to be easy.” In a March 5, 2026 Ford enforcement release, the California Privacy Protection Agency described a $375,703 fine and said Ford would change practices, including its handling of Global Privacy Control. The matter concerned Ford’s process; it does not establish that every automaker uses the same verification or opt-out workflow.
A March 12, 2025 Honda enforcement release described allegations that Honda required identity verification and excessive personal information for certain rights requests, including opt-outs, and presented choices unequally in a privacy tool. Those were allegations in an enforcement matter, not a finding that every Honda request or every automaker process works that way. If a portal asks for more information than seems necessary, consult the regulator’s current guidance or ask the business which legal basis requires it.
Other state rights
State privacy laws differ in coverage, definitions, deadlines, and verification. Hyundai’s U.S. notice, updated August 4, 2026, describes vehicle, account, service, driving, and geolocation information and provides a privacy-choices route. It also directs users to state-specific choices. Use the notice and portal for your residence rather than assuming a California label or remedy applies nationwide.
Global Privacy Control and other signals
California describes an opt-out preference signal, such as Global Privacy Control, as a browser or extension message telling websites that a user does not want personal information sold or shared. It is a web signal, not an in-vehicle setting and not a command to a vehicle modem. California’s 2025 Opt Me Out Act requirements for browsers take effect in January 2027; do not assume every browser is already required to provide the feature. Even when a signal is honored, it does not replace the car’s connectivity controls or a separate insurer cancellation.

How to delete data already held by data brokers
California’s Delete Request and Opt-out Platform (DROP) launched January 1, 2026. It lets consumers send a deletion request to registered data brokers. CalPrivacy says optional details such as a vehicle identification number can improve matching.
- First, submit the applicable request to the automaker and any directly enrolled service.
- Then use DROP for registered brokers, supplying optional matching details only through the official system and only when you are comfortable doing so.
- Track the request and any broker responses. A broker deletion request addresses broker-held copies; it does not disable collection by the automaker or erase records retained by an insurer, dealer, government agency, or another business outside the system.
Neither the automaker controls described above nor DROP promises that every previously shared record is deleted from every recipient. Retention exceptions, legal obligations, backups, and independent copies can apply. Ask each recipient what it will delete and when.
GM settlement: what California drivers should understand
On May 8, 2026, California’s attorney general and partner agencies announced a proposed $12.75 million settlement involving GM. The announcement said the proposal included a five-year restriction on selling driving data to consumer reporting agencies, deletion of certain retained data within 180 days subject to stated exceptions, and other requirements. It was subject to court approval when announced.
This is an enforcement and settlement development for California, not a general opt-out instruction and not proof that all GM data flows have stopped. Verify the settlement’s current status and terms before relying on it. GM owners should still use the current vehicle settings, account portal, and any separate insurer or dealer controls.
A practical opt-out checklist
- Write down the vehicle identification number, model year, connected-services plan, and account email.
- Read the current manual and privacy notice for your market.
- In the automaker app, review vehicle-specific data transmission, sale/share, targeted-advertising, and connected-service choices.
- In the vehicle, review location, diagnostics, trip logs, crash notifications, paired-device communications, and connected-service settings.
- List optional driving-score, safe-driving, or usage-based insurance programs and cancel them through their own accounts.
- Submit state privacy requests that apply to you; treat opt-out, access, correction, and deletion as separate requests.
- If you are a California resident, use DROP separately for registered data brokers after addressing the automaker and direct recipients.
- Save confirmation numbers, downloaded receipts, screenshots, and the date each setting changed.
- Recheck the app and vehicle after the next software update, service visit, or account change.
- Ask whether the action affects future collection only or also addresses information already shared.
Common problems and how to handle them
The portal asks for email verification
Complete only the verification the current notice requires, and save the submission record. California’s Ford enforcement matter specifically addressed email verification for connected-vehicle and digital-property opt-outs, so a verification step should not be treated as proof that all automakers follow one standard.
Best Value
The car keeps showing a connected-service warning
A warning can mean the service was disabled successfully but the head unit still displays unavailable features. Check the account portal, restart the system as the manual instructs, and contact the automaker if the account still shows an active consent. Do not infer from a warning alone that data transmission has stopped.
The insurer still has a driving score
Automaker settings may not cancel an insurer’s separate enrollment. Contact the insurer or telematics provider, request the enrollment terms and retention policy, and ask whether the score affects a current or future premium. Keep the cancellation confirmation.
You sold or transferred the vehicle
Remove the vehicle from your account, revoke digital keys and paired devices, and ask the automaker how to close or transfer connected services. The next owner’s consent and account are separate from your prior settings; confirm that your account no longer displays the vehicle.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
You want deletion rather than a connectivity shutdown
Submit a deletion or access request through the legal privacy portal and separately decide whether to disable connectivity. Deleting an account does not necessarily disable the vehicle modem, and disabling the modem does not necessarily delete historical records.
What to expect after opting out
Allow the time stated in the portal or applicable law for processing. Then sign in again and verify each vehicle-specific setting. Test only the features you are willing to reactivate; a remote command or navigation request can restore a connection on some systems. Keep the original confirmations because a later software update, ownership change, service appointment, or re-enrollment can alter the account state.
The safest interpretation is narrow: a confirmed control stops the categories and recipients named in that control, from the effective date described by the automaker or provider. It does not automatically govern every other data stream, recipient, historical copy, or legal retention exception.
