In Chrome for Android, tap More and then New tab to open a regular tab. For private browsing, tap More and choose Open in a new Incognito window. On some Android tablets, the option is labeled New Incognito window.
Open a regular tab in Chrome
- Open Chrome on your Android phone or tablet.
- Tap More.
- Tap New tab. Chrome opens its personalized New Tab page.
If Chrome displays a tab shortcut at the top of the window, you can use that to open a regular tab as well. The exact controls can vary with the device and Chrome interface. Google’s instructions for managing Chrome tabs on Android describe both options.

Open an Incognito tab
- Open Chrome and tap More.
- Choose Open in a new Incognito window. On some Android tablets, the menu item may read New Incognito window.
Chrome calls this an Incognito window, though people often refer to the page as an Incognito tab. If you want to open a link privately, touch and hold it, then choose the Incognito link option shown in the menu. Use the wording displayed on your device if it differs slightly. Google’s Incognito instructions for Android cover these options.
Switch between regular and Incognito tabs
Incognito tabs are separate from your regular Chrome tabs and do not appear in the regular tab view. Switch to the Incognito window in Chrome to find them. The Incognito session ends when all Incognito windows are closed.

What Incognito does—and does not—keep private
Incognito limits what Chrome keeps on your device after the session. When the session ends, Chrome says it does not retain the site data or record of sites visited in that session. Cookies and site data are held temporarily while you browse and removed at the end. Bookmarks you save and files you download remain on the device.
Incognito is not anonymity. Google puts it plainly: “While Incognito can help keep your browsing private on your device, it doesn’t make you invisible.” Websites, including Google sites, and organizations that manage your network—such as a school, employer, or internet service provider—may still be able to observe your activity. Chrome does not automatically sign you into your Google Account or other websites in Incognito, but that does not prevent those services from collecting data.
