Fire TV’s hidden diagnostic tools are called the Developer Tools Menu; its live overlay is System X-Ray. On supported Fire OS versions, hold the remote’s Center button for one second, then hold Down as well for 3–4 seconds. Release both and press Menu. Select System X-Ray and turn it on. The overlay shows live device, memory, network and display information while you reproduce a playback problem.
Open the Developer Tools Menu
With a Fire TV remote
- Hold Center for one second.
- While still holding Center, press and hold Down for about 3–4 seconds.
- Release both buttons, then press Menu.
- Choose System X-Ray and switch it on.
If the staggered button sequence does not open the menu, try holding Center and Down together, then release and press Menu. Amazon documents this menu for Fire TV and Fire TV Stick devices running Fire OS 5.0.2 or later. The overlay can remain visible while you change apps, which is useful for checking what the device reports as a problem occurs. Amazon’s Developer Tools Menu instructions explain the available launch methods.

With a game controller
Hold A and Y together for five seconds, release them, then press the controller’s Menu button. This launch method is not enabled for System X-Ray on Fire OS 14.
With ADB
Amazon documents this command to open the dialog:

ADB debugging must be enabled on the Fire TV, and a computer must be connected to it. Amazon’s documented setup uses Android Studio and the Fire TV’s IP address. On Fire OS 14, Amazon directs users to use ADB because the remote and game-controller launch options are not enabled for launching System X-Ray.
What System X-Ray can—and cannot—tell you
System X-Ray is a live diagnostic view, not a recorded report or a definitive reading of the video stream’s source quality. Amazon describes it as gathering instantaneous system metrics and displaying them over the screen. The figures help you see what the Fire TV is doing while playback runs; they do not by themselves identify the cause of a fault. Amazon’s System X-Ray documentation describes the panels and their limits.
- HDMI mode describes the Fire TV’s output to the television, not necessarily the video encoding or resolution delivered by an app. An app may select a lower resolution because of network or system-resource conditions.
- System download rate is current download traffic across the device, not the connection’s maximum or available bandwidth.
- One reading is a snapshot. A brief high CPU value or a momentary network change alone does not establish a persistent problem.
Interpret the overlay panels
Display (DIS)
HDMI Mode reports the physical output height in pixels and refresh rate. For example, “1080p 60” means 1080 pixels and 60 frames per second. HDCP reports the content-protection version used for content sent to the television over HDMI. These are output-path readings; they do not prove that an app is streaming at the same resolution.

CPU
Where CPU information is supported, each column represents a device CPU core and shows its real-time utilization. Amazon’s bands are:

Sustained high utilization can point to an app placing heavy demands on the processor. A single high value is not enough to conclude that the device is faulty.

- Blue, App: memory used by the foreground app. Amazon specifies PSS; this is not GPU memory.
- Gray, Other: memory used by other apps.
- White, Available: free memory.
The foreground app’s package name appears below the bar. These values can help investigate high app memory use, memory leaks or low-memory conditions, but they are not a diagnosis on their own.
Network (NET)
- RSSI is Wi-Fi signal strength in dBm. It is a negative value, and a value closer to zero means a stronger received signal. Amazon colors the indicator green for strong, orange for average and red for weak. RSSI is not shown when Fire TV uses a wired connection.
- System is active download traffic for the whole Fire TV, including foreground and background apps.
- Visible is traffic attributed to the foreground app and cannot exceed System. Amazon says Visible data is aggregated over two hours, so it should not be read as an unqualified, instantaneous throughput figure.
System traffic is not available bandwidth. A low traffic reading does not alone show whether the internet connection could deliver more data, and a high RSSI value does not guarantee that the router or internet connection is working properly.
Advanced multimedia details and recording
Advanced Options
When Android MediaCodec APIs are in use, Advanced Options can show audio and video codecs, hardware acceleration, input bitrate, secure status, dropped video frames, playback resolution and frame rate. An Audio Focus panel can show the package and focus gain or loss details where supported. Availability of panels and fields varies by model, device age and playback path. Fire TV Stick 1st Gen does not have Advanced Options because of limited system resources; Audio Focus may also be absent on older devices.

Take a one-time snapshot with ADB
With System X-Ray already running, use:
adb shell dumpsys activity service com.amazon.ssm/.OverlayService
Amazon documents this command to print a snapshot of the overlay data.

- In the Developer Tools Menu, turn on Record & Share.
- Choose a recording interval and storage duration.
- Play media so the device gathers data.
- Retrieve the recorded output with
adb shell dumpsys activity service com.amazon.ssm/.OverlayService -all.
Amazon lists intervals of 2, 4, 8, 16 or 32 seconds and storage durations of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 hours; the documented defaults are a 2-second interval and one hour. Record & Share is labeled experimental beta, and a large memory output can time out.

Fire OS and device limitations
- Fire OS 14: remote and game-controller launch are not enabled for System X-Ray; use ADB. The CPU panel is also unsupported.
- Fire OS 7 and 8: CPU information is no longer displayed because of Android access restrictions.
- Fire TV Stick 1st Gen: Advanced Options are unavailable because of limited system resources.
- Older devices: Audio Focus and some advanced multimedia fields may not be available.
The menu and readings you see can therefore differ by Fire TV model, Fire OS version, app and playback codec path.
Use Network Status for connection-path problems
If the issue is simply that Fire TV cannot connect, try the consumer-facing Network Status Tool at Settings > Network. It checks the link from Fire TV to the router and the link from the router to the internet, then may offer recommendations. If a connection error appears, select Network Diagnostics on that screen. Some compatible Fire TV models also show download speed-test results, an Advanced view with network details including data use, and an option to run the speed test again; those extras are not available on every model. Amazon’s Network Status Tool help page describes the consumer diagnostics.
