A real movie file rarely harms you by itself. The usual danger is what comes with it: a fake “movie” that is really an installer, a page demanding a special player or codec, or an old media player with a known flaw. Check the source, check the full filename, refuse extra software, keep everything updated, and open the file in a player you got from its official site.
Can a video file contain a virus?
Yes, in two ways. The file may not be a video at all, or it may be a real media file crafted to exploit a bug in the player. VideoLAN’s June 2019 Security Advisory 1901 said VLC 3.0.6 and earlier were affected by problems involving specially crafted AVI or MKV files, and that VLC 3.0.7 addressed them. Its April 2021 bulletin covered further crafted file and playlist issues in VLC 3.0.12 and earlier, fixed in 3.0.13.

Those are historical advisories, not current version guidance. The lesson is practical. A player does not make an untrusted file safe, and an out-of-date player can be a weak point. VideoLAN’s 2019 advisory told users to “refrain from opening files from untrusted third parties” until patched.

The safe sequence
1. Check where the file came from
Prefer a legitimate source you recognize. The FTC warns that illegal video apps and pirated streaming add-ons can carry malware, so they are a poor place to get movies. An unexpected download, such as a file that arrived by message or started from a pop-up, deserves more suspicion than one you went looking for on a reputable service.

2. Read the complete filename
Windows uses the extension at the end of a filename to indicate file type. Common movie extensions include AVI, MOV and MP4. Turn on file extensions in File Explorer (View, then Show, then File name extensions) so you see the real ending. A file called Movie.2024.mp4.exe is a program, not a video. The extension tells you the apparent format, not whether the contents are safe. Be wary of any “movie” that is a small installer, or one that ends in a program or script type.
3. Refuse extra software prompts
Stop if the file or its page asks you to install a “video viewer,” a codec pack, a download manager, or a security exception. FTC and Microsoft guidance both point the same way: get software only from the official vendor’s website. A genuine movie plays in a standard player without a custom installer.

4. Update and scan
Keep your operating system, browser, media player and security software current. Microsoft names an up-to-date real-time security product, such as Defender Antivirus, as protection against malware and potentially unwanted software. If your security software offers to scan a download, let it. Whether every current operating system scans every download automatically is not established by the sources used here, so do not assume it. Scan manually if you’re unsure.
5. Use a player from its official site
VLC is a free, cross-platform player that plays most multimedia files. Windows Media Player supports a documented set of formats. Whichever you pick, download it from the vendor’s own site and avoid third-party portals and bundled installers. VideoLAN said in a 2017 statement, in the context of trojaned software: “The only safe source for getting VLC media player is the official VideoLAN website.” That was a historical statement, not a check of any installer today.

6. Do not override warnings
If your antivirus or the system blocks the file, do not turn protection off to watch the movie. A download page that tells you to disable your antivirus is a strong sign of malware.

Usually you need a capable player, not a codec download. Compare the two common options on these points:

If a file won’t open, check the official format documentation or try another reputable player. Never install a codec pack from a pop-up or unfamiliar site. If a codec is truly needed, get it from the relevant official vendor. Wide format support is a compatibility feature. It says nothing about whether a file is benign.

- Stop using the device for passwords, banking or other sensitive transactions.
- Update your security software.
- Run a full scan and delete the files it flags.
- If problems persist, get professional help.
Ignore unsolicited calls or pop-ups that claim to have found malware and pressure you to buy a product. The FTC specifically cautions against buying security software in response to an unexpected call or message. Use the protection already built into your system, or software from a vendor you chose yourself.
