How do I access the Android task manager?
On phones using the gesture-navigation flow covered by Google, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and hold briefly, then let go. The recent-apps view appears. If your phone uses different navigation controls or the gesture does not open the view, check your phone manufacturer’s instructions. Android navigation can vary by device and configuration.
How do I close an app on Android?
Open the recent-apps view, find the app card, and swipe it up to dismiss it. This removes the app from the recent-apps view; it is not the same as using Force stop in Settings.

Some phones also show a Clear all control to dismiss all recent-app cards. Its availability and placement vary. For Android Go, Google documents holding the recent-apps gesture and tapping Clear all at the bottom; on Android Go devices with three-button navigation, tap the Recent apps button to open the view. When should I use Force stop?
Use Force stop when an app is not responding or is causing a problem—not just to switch away from it. On many devices, the path is Settings > Apps > See all apps > [app] > Force stop > OK. Force stop is a troubleshooting step, while swiping away an app card is a recent-apps action. Google also notes that apps can usually be force stopped through Settings when troubleshooting crashes, and that settings vary by phone. Google’s guidance for an Android device that restarts or crashes

Do you need to close apps to save memory or battery?
Usually, no. Google says: “Even if you don’t close apps, you won’t run out of memory or battery. Android manages these automatically.” Close or force stop an app when it is not responding, rather than routinely clearing recent apps. Google Android Help

Memory and storage are different: storage keeps files such as photos and music, while memory is used by Android and running programs. Closing recent apps is not a general way to clear storage. Google’s explanation of storage and memory
