On iPhone and Android, the official Google Photos instructions cover creating GIFs, not a universal way to play existing files.

Microsoft lists GIF among the formats Photos supports, but its guidance does not promise animated playback across every Windows build. If Photos shows only a still frame, try opening the file in a web browser or another image viewer that supports animated GIFs. That is a general fallback, not a guarantee about a particular app or Windows version.

Play an animated GIF on Mac
Use Finder Quick Look for playback
-
Select the GIF in Finder.
-
Press and hold the Space bar. If the preview does not appear automatically, this opens Quick Look; Apple identifies Quick Look as the way to play an animated GIF.
Use Preview to inspect individual frames
Preview is useful when you want to see the animation’s component images rather than watch it play continuously. Open the GIF in Preview, choose View > Thumbnails, then click the disclosure arrow beside the file name in the sidebar to reveal its frames. Apple documents this frame-inspection feature in its guide to viewing an animated GIF’s frames in Preview on Mac.

Open an existing GIF on iPhone or iPad
The official instructions reviewed here do not confirm a specific playback path for an existing GIF in Apple’s Photos app. Start from the app or location where you received or saved the file and try opening it there. If it appears as a still, try a browser or a photo app that supports animated GIFs. These are general troubleshooting options, not verified steps for Apple Photos.
Google Photos documents a way to make a GIF from selected photos and videos on iPhone and iPad: open Google Photos, go to Create, choose Animation, select the photos, then tap Create. That creates an animation; it does not establish how Apple Photos plays an existing GIF. See Google Photos’ iPhone and iPad creation instructions.

Open an existing GIF on Android
For a GIF already on the device, locate it in the file manager or the app where it was received, then open it with a photo viewer or browser if Android offers a choice. The exact options depend on the device and installed apps; Google’s instructions do not establish one playback route that works across Android manufacturers, gallery apps, and OS versions.
Google Photos documents creating an animation from photos: open the app, tap Create, choose Animation, select photos, then tap Create. This is a creation workflow, not confirmation that every Android gallery can play an existing GIF. See Google Photos’ Android creation instructions.

Why is my GIF not moving?
A file that appears as a still may be open in an app or preview that displays only a frame, or the app may not animate GIFs in that context. Try another viewer or a browser that supports animation. On Mac, use Finder Quick Look for playback; Preview’s documented use here is viewing frames individually. On Windows, Photos lists GIF support, but Microsoft does not specify animation behavior for every Windows build. Mobile playback can vary by app and device, and the official mobile instructions cited above explain how to create animations rather than establish a universal fix.
