How to Open and Measure the Steam Frame CAD Files

Valve’s Steam Frame CAD release can be measured in any compatible CAD viewer or editor once you verify the supplied file type, preserve its assembly structure, and confirm units. This guide explains the workflow, licensing boundary, measurement methods, and fixes for common errors.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve has released Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information for non-commercial use. To measure them, start at Valve’s Steam Hardware announcement dated October 9, 2026, follow its CAD-file link, identify the actual file type supplied, and open it in a CAD viewer or editor that explicitly supports that type. Check the model’s units before using the application’s Measure, Inspect, or equivalent tool. Valve lists the core module plus facial interface at 175 × 95 × 110 mm, but that published size is reference context; a measurement taken from the CAD geometry is the value to use for a specific feature.

Where Valve published the Steam Frame files

Valve announced on October 9, 2026, that “Steam Frame CAD files and electrical interface information are now available for non-commercial use.” The files are reached through the CAD-file link in that Steam Hardware announcement. Use Valve’s announcement as the starting point rather than a third-party mirror so that you receive the current package and its accompanying terms or instructions.

The announcement distinguishes non-commercial and commercial use. Non-commercial access is the stated basis for the release. If you intend to sell a product, provide a paid design service, manufacture accessories for sale, or otherwise use the files commercially, follow Valve’s linked commercial-use instructions and contact Valve before proceeding. Downloading a file does not by itself grant commercial permission.

What to check before opening a file

The available public information does not establish the exact file extensions, folder structure, recommended CAD application, or application-specific menu names. Those details must be checked in the package you download. Do not assume that a file is a particular type simply because it is called a CAD file.

Valve’s product page gives one useful reference dimension: 175 × 95 × 110 mm for the core module plus facial interface. Valve cautions that some specifications may change before availability, so treat this as a broad published product size, not as proof that every downloaded file or future production unit will have those exact outer dimensions.

Choose software from the files, not from assumptions

After you inspect the package, select a viewer or CAD editor that documents support for the actual file type and for the operations you need. For simple inspection, a read-only viewer may be enough. For sectioning, hiding bodies, checking clearances, or exporting a derived design, you may need an editor with solid, surface, or mesh inspection tools.

What you need to do Capability to verify Why it matters
View the complete device Support for the supplied assembly or model type An application may open one part while silently omitting linked components.
Measure distances and angles A measurement or inspection tool for the model’s geometry Basic viewers may display the file but provide no reliable measuring command.
Inspect internal features Section, clipping, transparency, or body-isolation controls External dimensions alone cannot reveal connector depth, wall thickness, or internal clearance.
Preserve editable geometry Native support for the supplied model type, rather than a display-only import Conversion can turn precise design geometry into a less editable representation.
Share a measurement report Annotation, screenshot, or export capability Recording the view, units, and revision makes a result reproducible.

If the package contains several representations, prefer the one described by Valve as the design model for dimension-critical work. Use a lightweight representation only for a quick visual check unless its notes say that it is dimensionally equivalent.

How to open the Steam Frame CAD files

  1. Download the package from Valve’s announcement. Save the original archive or files without renaming them. If your operating system marks the download as blocked, use its normal file-unblock or security confirmation before extraction.
  2. Extract to a dedicated folder. Keep the folder hierarchy intact. Assemblies often refer to component files by relative path; moving only one file can leave a model incomplete.
  3. Read the README and license first. Look for opening notes, required import settings, unit information, revision identifiers, and commercial-use instructions.
  4. Identify the principal model. Start with the file or folder described as the assembly, complete device, or top-level design. If no description is supplied, inspect the largest or top-level item while keeping every companion file in the same folder.
  5. Open it through the application’s file-open command. Do not drag only one component into a blank document if the package is an assembly. If the application offers an import dialog, leave healing, scaling, and simplification options unchanged on the first pass so you can see the source geometry as supplied.
  6. Check for missing references. A warning about unresolved links, suppressed components, or unsupported entities means the view may not represent the complete design. Resolve the paths or reopen the top-level file before measuring.
  7. Save a working copy in the application’s own project format. Keep the untouched Valve files alongside it. Label the working copy with the Valve revision and your application version.

Because the exact formats and folder layout have not been established in the available official information, the command labels in your application may differ. The reliable sequence is: preserve the package, open the top-level item with all companions present, and verify that the complete model loaded before taking measurements.

Set and verify units before measuring

Units are the most common reason a perfectly measured model produces an implausible result. A viewer can display a model at the wrong scale if the file’s unit metadata is missing or if an import option applies a conversion.

  1. Open the document or model properties and locate the document, import, or display-units setting.
  2. Record the unit system shown by the file and the unit system used for displayed measurements.
  3. Set the display to millimetres if you want to compare directly with Valve’s published 175 × 95 × 110 mm figure.
  4. Check whether the application distinguishes document units from annotation or display units. Changing only the display can alter labels without changing the geometry.
  5. Measure one obvious overall span and compare its order of magnitude with the published product size. A result roughly ten or one hundred times too large or too small usually indicates a scale or unit interpretation problem.
  6. Do not rescale the model merely to make it match the published dimensions. First determine whether the file already contains unit metadata, whether you opened the correct component, and whether the published size includes the facial interface.

Keep the unit setting in every measurement record. “42” is not a usable result without “42 mm,” “42 in,” or another explicit unit.

Measure geometry in a repeatable way

Measure the overall envelope

Use the application’s bounding-box, extrema, or distance tool to find the maximum span along each principal direction. Align the model to a known coordinate system first; otherwise “length,” “width,” and “height” can change when the part is rotated. Record whether the result covers the core module alone, the facial interface alone, or both together.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Valve’s published reference for the core module plus facial interface is 175 × 95 × 110 mm. A CAD measurement can differ if the model uses a different coordinate orientation, excludes a removable feature, includes a clearance envelope, or represents a revision made before final product specifications. Note exactly what bodies and features were selected.

Measure between faces, edges, and points

For a straight distance, select the two faces, edges, vertices, or reference points that define the feature and use the tool’s distance mode. Confirm whether the application reports the shortest distance, projected distance, or distance along an axis. For a mounting pattern, measure center-to-center between holes or datum features rather than from edge to edge.

  • For a hole, record diameter, depth, and the reference face or axis used.
  • For a connector opening, record width, height, depth, and the clearance direction.
  • For a curved surface, use the radius or diameter command if available instead of measuring a chord.
  • For an angle, select the two lines, edges, axes, or planar faces that define it and record the orientation convention.
  • For wall thickness, use a section or opposing-face measurement and state where the section was taken.

Inspect assemblies and separate bodies

Many CAD packages allow individual bodies, components, or layers to be hidden and shown. Isolate the core module and facial interface before taking component-specific measurements. Then restore all components and repeat the overall-envelope check. If a measurement changes when a component is hidden, the first result was an assembly measurement rather than a single-part measurement.

Use sectioning for internal clearances

When a feature is enclosed, create a temporary clipping plane or section view instead of guessing from the exterior. Position the section through the connector, fastener, cable route, or cavity, and measure between the resulting faces. Save a screenshot or annotated view that shows the section location; otherwise another person cannot reproduce the result.

Electrical-interface files need separate verification

Valve announced electrical interface information alongside the CAD files. Treat those documents as a complementary source, not as proof that every electrical feature is modelled in the three-dimensional file. Check whether the package includes connector drawings, pin assignments, dimensions, tolerances, or revision notes. Match the drawing’s reference designators and revision to the physical feature you measure in the CAD model.

Record measurements so someone else can reproduce them

Record Example of the information needed
Source Valve Steam Hardware CAD release, download date, and supplied revision label
File and component Top-level model or named body; include whether the facial interface is present
Application Application name and version, plus whether the file was opened natively or imported
Units Document units and displayed measurement units
Selection and method Faces, edges, points, axes, or section plane selected; distance, radius, angle, or bounding-box mode
Result Number with unit and sensible precision; avoid reporting more decimals than the model or drawing supports
Evidence Screenshot or annotation showing the selected geometry and measurement label

CAD geometry can show nominal design dimensions, not manufacturing tolerance, wear, padding compression, or changes made before retail production. If you are designing a part that must fit, leave the required clearance and validate against a physical unit when one is available.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause Action
Only one small part appears You opened a component instead of the top-level assembly. Reopen the principal model with the complete extracted folder beside it.
Parts are missing or shown as unresolved Referenced files were moved, renamed, or unsupported. Restore the original folder structure, relink references, and check the package instructions.
The model is 10× or 100× the expected size Unit metadata or import scaling was interpreted incorrectly. Review document units and import settings; do not apply an arbitrary scale until the source units are known.
The Measure command is unavailable The application is a display-only viewer or the model is still loading. Wait for loading to finish and verify that the application supports measurement for this file type.
Measurements differ after conversion Export or repair changed geometry, units, or assembly placement. Measure the untouched source first and compare the converted file feature by feature.
The overall size does not equal 175 × 95 × 110 mm You measured a different body, orientation, revision, or product scope. Confirm that the core module and facial interface are included, then document the selected bodies and revision.
Internal features cannot be selected Exterior bodies obscure the target. Hide surrounding bodies or use a clipping/section view, then measure the exposed faces.

Using the measurements for design work

Use the model to establish geometry, then use the accompanying drawings or notes for tolerances and interface requirements when they are supplied. For an accessory or enclosure, begin with a copy of the measured envelope, identify which surfaces are functional datums, and add clearance for the intended manufacturing process. Keep the Valve model unchanged and place your derived design in a separate file so that later Valve revisions can be compared cleanly.

When sharing results, include the release revision, units, selected component, and a marked image. A statement such as “the opening is 18 mm” is incomplete unless it identifies the opening, measurement direction, model revision, and unit system.
