Continuous batching lets an LLM serving system change which requests share GPU work at each generation iteration. When one request finishes, the scheduler can remove it and admit queued work to a later iteration instead of keeping the finished request’s batch position idle until every other request is done. The system still has to respect queueing, token, memory, and hardware limits; continuous batching is a scheduling approach, not a guarantee that every request joins immediately or that every latency measure improves.
What continuous batching means
An autoregressive language model produces a response one token at a time. Serving systems commonly run multiple requests together so the GPU can process useful work for more than one sequence at once. In fixed or static batching, a group is formed and typically stays together until its requests finish. If one response ends earlier than the others, its position may no longer do productive work while the remaining responses continue.

Continuous batching changes membership at generation-step boundaries. The scheduler can remove completed requests and use available capacity for other work in a subsequent iteration. NVIDIA’s Triton documentation uses continuous batching, iteration-level batching, and in-flight batching for strategies that form batches at each iteration step. The terms describe a general scheduling idea; implementation details differ among serving systems.
Think of active requests as a moving queue rather than a set that must remain intact from start to finish. At a step boundary, a scheduler can account for sequences that are still generating, requests that have completed, newly queued requests, and the resources available for the next round. It then schedules eligible work, runs the model, updates sequence state and cache, and repeats. This is a useful model of the behavior, not a claim that all engines use an identical internal loop.

What happens during a scheduling iteration?
A request does not simply enter the GPU whenever a slot opens. The scheduler has to consider the amount and kind of work that can fit, along with the model’s state for each sequence. The high-level cycle is:
- Track active sequences. Requests that are still generating need another decode step; completed requests no longer need their position in the active work.
- Check waiting work and admission rules. The scheduler considers queued requests and decides what can be admitted under its policy and current resource budgets.
- Build the next iteration’s work. Eligible decode work can be combined with prompt-processing work if the implementation supports it and the budgets permit.
- Run the model and update state. The system processes the scheduled tokens and updates each sequence’s progress and KV cache.
- Repeat at the next boundary. Newly completed work can leave, and other work can be considered for a later iteration.
The important unit of change is the iteration, not an arbitrary instant in the middle of a model operation. Queueing and admission policy still determine when a waiting request begins. A busy service can have a queue even when it uses continuous batching, and a request may wait if the next iteration cannot accommodate it.
How prefill and decode fit together
Prefill processes the prompt
When a request arrives, the model must process the prompt, often called prefill or context processing. A prompt may contain many tokens, so prefill can represent a larger block of work than one generation step. The serving system also needs to establish the request’s state for subsequent generation.

Decode advances the response
After prefill, the model generates the response through decode. A decode iteration generally advances each active sequence by a small amount, commonly one next-token step. Because prompts and generated responses have different lengths and work shapes, treating every request as interchangeable can leave the system poorly balanced.
Chunked prefill can share capacity with generation
Chunked prefill divides a long prompt into portions so prompt processing can be scheduled under a token budget and interleaved with decode work already in progress. Hugging Face’s Transformers architecture documentation describes processing the portion that fits when a prompt exceeds the available budget, then holding the remainder for later steps. This can prevent a long prompt from monopolizing a scheduling opportunity, but the exact scheduling policy is implementation-specific.
TensorRT-LLM documents in-flight batching that mixes sequences in the context phase with sequences in the generation phase. Its documented implementation requires packed input tensors without padding. That tensor requirement is specific to that implementation; it should not be treated as a universal rule for all continuous-batching engines.

Why the KV cache matters
During attention, the model produces key and value data for tokens it has already processed. The KV cache retains that data so the system need not recompute it from the beginning at every output step. Each active request therefore consumes cache capacity as its prompt and generated sequence grow. The scheduler’s ability to keep work moving depends not only on compute capacity but also on whether cache memory is available.

Paging is related to continuous batching because it helps manage memory for changing active requests, but it is not the same thing as the scheduling policy. Continuous batching by itself does not eliminate memory waste, and different engines need not implement paging in the same way.
Token and KV-cache budgets can constrain what the scheduler admits. Hugging Face’s architecture documentation describes both a token budget and a KV-page cache budget. If the cache is under pressure, behavior depends on the system. In the documented Hugging Face behavior, a soft reset can return an active request to the queue after incorporating its generated tokens into its prompt and freeing its cache blocks; the request can resume when space is available. This is one documented implementation’s behavior, not a standard action every engine must take.

Continuous versus fixed batching
| Aspect | Fixed or static batching | Continuous batching |
|---|---|---|
| Batch membership | A group is typically kept together until its requests finish. | Membership can be reconsidered at generation-iteration boundaries. |
| When a request finishes | Its position may remain unproductive while other requests in that group continue. | The completed request can be removed, and later work can be admitted to a subsequent iteration. |
| Handling uneven output lengths | Shorter requests can finish before the rest of the batch, leaving less useful work in their positions. | Slot reuse can make the batch more responsive to requests finishing at different times. |
| Admission of new work | New work is generally not inserted into the existing group mid-run. | Queued work may join later iterations when policy and resource limits allow. |
| Operational constraints | Still depends on the system’s batch construction and available resources. | Still depends on admission policy, token and cache budgets, backend capability, and service limits. |
The practical difference is not that continuous batching removes waiting, but that the system can make new scheduling decisions as generation proceeds. If all requests have similar lengths, there may be less idle capacity for it to reclaim. If lengths vary, the ability to reuse capacity as requests finish can be valuable. Actual impact depends on the workload and configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What benefits to expect—and what not to assume
The direct opportunity is better use of batch capacity when requests complete at different times: a finished sequence need not hold a place in an earlier group until its longest-running peer finishes. NVIDIA describes the aim as improving throughput and latency through continuous slot reuse; Hugging Face describes dynamic rescheduling as a way to keep GPU utilization and throughput high. Those are system goals, not guarantees for every workload.
Results depend on request arrival rate and concurrency, the distribution of prompt and output lengths, scheduler policy, GPU memory, model and kernel support, and the latency objective. A configuration that improves throughput at sustained high load might not be the best choice for a service prioritizing a quick first response. Nor does continuous batching necessarily reduce every kind of latency: a request may wait in a queue, share resources with other work, or be affected by prefill and cache pressure.
Best Value
Configuration choices can involve trade-offs. Hugging Face documents that max_batch_tokens affects prefill throughput and time to first token when the service is prefill-bound. CUDA graphs can reduce dispatch overhead, but require handling graph shapes and storage. Async batching overlaps CPU and GPU work, while requiring roughly double the VRAM for input buffers according to that documentation. These controls and their consequences are version- and hardware-specific; they are not universal tuning values.
How to compare serving systems fairly
Do not use aggregate tokens per second as the sole measure of an interactive inference service. It can hide whether users wait a long time for the first token or experience slow gaps during generation. Compare systems under matched conditions: the same model, hardware, request-length distribution, sampling settings, and load. Report the workload and configuration alongside the result.
| Measure | What it helps reveal |
|---|---|
| Time to first token | How long a request waits for its first generated token, including the effects of prompt processing and scheduling. |
| Inter-token latency | How quickly subsequent output tokens arrive; relevant to perceived responsiveness while a response is streaming. |
| Throughput | Tokens or requests served per unit time under the stated workload and load conditions. |
| Concurrency | How many requests the system handles at the same time for the reported measurements. |
| KV-cache and total GPU-memory use | Whether memory capacity is constraining admission or the number and length of active sequences. |
| Prompt/output length distribution | Whether the workload is prompt-heavy, generation-heavy, or has substantial variation that affects scheduling. |
| Queueing, admission, and overload behavior | What the system does when requests arrive faster than it can serve them or when budgets are exhausted. |
| Model, backend, and hardware compatibility | Whether the reported behavior is available with the actual model, kernels, serving engine, and accelerator. |
These are useful evaluation axes for understanding the trade-offs; they are not a single standardized benchmark recipe. A reported speedup without its request mix, hardware, model, concurrency, and latency measurements is not enough to predict performance for another service. The documentation reviewed here does not establish one generally applicable speedup figure for continuous batching.

How the idea appears in serving frameworks
| System | Documented terminology or features | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| vLLM | Its current stable documentation lists continuous batching, chunked prefill, prefix caching, and PagedAttention-based KV-memory management. | These features describe vLLM’s implementation; they do not establish equivalence with another engine. |
| Hugging Face Transformers | Documentation covers ContinuousBatchingManager, generation APIs, token and cache budgets, scheduling policies, and configuration options. |
The architecture details cited here are from versioned Transformers v5.5.1 documentation. The current continuous-batching page says putting continuous_batching_config on GenerationConfig is deprecated and documents removal in v5.19, so do not copy that legacy pattern. |
| NVIDIA TensorRT-LLM | Calls the approach in-flight batching, also described as continuous or iteration-level batching, and documents mixing context and generation sequences. | Its packed-input ordering and no-padding requirements are specific to its documented implementation. |
| NVIDIA Triton Inference Server | Distinguishes stateless dynamic batching from stateful sequence batching. Its iterative-sequence feature allows a backend to yield and reschedule work across iterations. | Triton explicitly labels iterative sequences provisional and likely to change. |
The names can sound interchangeable, but they do not mean the systems expose identical controls, support the same models, use the same cache design, or make identical admission decisions. Documentation status, API behavior, defaults, and hardware support can change. The distinctions above reflect official documentation accessed on October 13, 2026; consult the relevant versioned documentation before relying on a particular option or behavior.
Practical takeaway
Continuous batching is iteration-by-iteration rescheduling for autoregressive inference: completed requests can leave, and eligible queued work can enter later iterations. Its value comes from making batch capacity more adaptable to uneven request lifetimes. Prefill, decode, KV-cache capacity, token budgets, admission policy, and the service’s latency target determine how that flexibility works in practice. Evaluate a real deployment with matched workloads and both responsiveness and throughput measurements rather than assuming the scheduling method alone predicts the result.
