Before opening a PlayStation 4, find its CUH model number and choose instructions written for that exact revision. Replacing the hard drive is a limited procedure; opening the case to clean or remove internal components is a deeper repair. Sony warns users not to disassemble or modify the system and cautions about electric shock and laser exposure.
Find your PS4 model number first
The PS4 name covers several hardware families, and screw locations and opening steps differ. Sony says the model and serial numbers appear on the console chassis and original packaging, with locations varying across CUH-10xx/11xx/12xx, CUH-20xx, and CUH-70xx systems. Use Sony’s model-number location guide to identify yours before selecting a repair procedure.

Do not assume that an original PS4, Slim, and Pro open the same way. Sony’s HDD instructions separate steps by model family, and repair references likewise provide revision-specific procedures.

Choose the right level of disassembly
- Hard-drive replacement: Use Sony’s HDD procedure for your model. This accesses the drive bay and does not require taking apart the full console.
- Dust cleaning: Opening the case goes beyond Sony’s user-facing HDD steps. Follow a case-opening or cleaning guide that explicitly matches your model.
- Component repair: Fan, power-supply, or other internal work requires a model-specific teardown. Do not extend a guide for one revision to a different PS4.
For a hard-drive upgrade, follow Sony’s model-specific steps
Sony’s PS4 HDD upgrade instructions begin with backing up saved data, confirming the console model, and preparing a long Phillips screwdriver. The page provides different instructions for CUH-7000, CUH-2015, and CUH-1200/1110/1000 families; select the section that matches your console rather than combining steps.

For the original-family procedure, Sony describes moving the top panel, removing the PlayStation-symbol screw, sliding out the drive, removing the four caddy screws, and fitting the replacement drive. These are hard-drive steps, not a full teardown. Sony notes in its CUH-7000 instructions that removing the HDD bay cover sticker will not affect the warranty; that statement should not be read as approval of full internal disassembly.
For case opening and dust cleaning, match the guide to the revision
Original PS4 guide example
The iFixit opening and cleaning guide covers an original PS4. Its procedure begins with the console upside down and the rear facing you. It removes rear stickers to expose case screws, then removes three 7.2 mm TR8 security Torx screws. The lower shell is also held by plastic clips, which may take significant force to release.

That screw count and sequence apply to the guide’s stated model scope, not automatically to Slim or Pro consoles or every original revision. For another model, use the matching entry in iFixit’s PS4 repair index.
Use the right tools for the job
- For the cited original-PS4 case-opening procedure, the guide specifies a TR8 security Torx driver.
- For Sony’s HDD replacement procedure, Sony specifies a long Phillips screwdriver.
These tools serve different tasks. Confirm the required tool in the guide for your exact model before starting.

Handle the power-supply connector and clips carefully
In the original-PS4 cleaning guide, the power-supply cable connector can be firmly seated. Grip the white connector head and work it out; do not pull hard on the wires. Release shell clips carefully rather than twisting the case or levering blindly, since force on a connector, wire, or plastic clip can cause damage.
Dust cleaning does not automatically require thermal-paste replacement
Removing loose dust and performing a deeper cooling-system service are different levels of work. Thermal paste is relevant when a repair requires removing the heatsink; it is not an automatic requirement every time the case is opened for cleaning. Only proceed with that deeper work if the model-specific guide calls for it and you are prepared to complete the reassembly correctly.

Know Sony’s warning before opening the console
Sony’s safety guidance says, “Never disassemble or modify the system or accessories.” It also says there are no user-serviceable components inside the PS4 system; the supplied hard disk drive may be removed, but not disassembled or modified. The guide warns of electric shock and laser-radiation exposure. The cited safety document is for model CUH-7215B, so its warranty wording should not be generalized to every model or region.

If you continue with internal service, use a procedure for the exact CUH revision and stop if a connector, screw, or component does not match the guide. Reassemble using the same model-specific reference
Keep screws and parts organized as you remove them, and use the guide’s reassembly sequence rather than relying on memory. If you are addressing a diagnosed fault, use repair documentation for that component and model from the PS4 repair index. Do not substitute a teardown sequence from another revision.
