OCR reads text in the page images and adds a text layer, so you can search for words and usually select or copy the recognized text while keeping the scanned pages visible. Save a backup first, then check the results against the page images: OCR can make mistakes.
Choose an OCR method
Use Acrobat for a graphical workflow, especially if you are processing a document or a batch through its interface. OCRmyPDF is a command-line option for local, repeatable processing and automation. The reviewed official sources do not establish that one produces more accurate text than the other; choose based on your workflow, language needs, scan condition and output requirements.

Make a scanned PDF searchable in Acrobat

Adjust any applicable settings, then choose Recognize Text.

Save the processed PDF. Search for a phrase visible on a page, then select or copy text from several pages and compare it with the scan.
For a batch, choose In multiple files, add the PDFs, set the output folder and filename preferences, configure general settings, and run recognition. Adobe advises reviewing recognized text for accuracy and completeness.

Improve a poor-quality scan in Acrobat
If the scan is difficult to read, Acrobat provides an enhancement route that combines image cleanup and OCR. Choose All tools > Scan & OCR > Enhance scanned file, select the pages, enable Recognize text, adjust scan settings if needed, and run the enhancement. Review the resulting page images as well as the text layer; cleanup can change the appearance of a scan.
Run OCRmyPDF from the command line
OCRmyPDF adds a searchable text layer using Tesseract. Install OCRmyPDF and its required Ghostscript and Tesseract components using the current instructions for your operating system. The project provides packages for common Linux distributions, Homebrew and other supported systems; installation details can change, so confirm the commands for your platform in the current project documentation.

Decide whether PDF/A is appropriate
OCRmyPDF supports PDF/A output with --output-type pdfa. PDF/A is an archival subset of PDF, but the project’s versioned documentation notes two practical tradeoffs: it can increase file size, and it does not allow encryption. Use it when an archival requirement calls for it, and check the behavior and defaults in the version you have installed rather than relying on older documentation.
Check the OCR result and fix common problems

Search finds nothing: Confirm that recognition ran and that you saved the processed file. Test a phrase that is clearly visible in the page image.

Text is garbled or incorrect: Check the recognition language and, with OCRmyPDF, make sure the matching language data is installed. Also inspect page clarity and orientation. In Acrobat, try the enhancement controls; in OCRmyPDF, try deskewing or rotation correction where appropriate.

Some pages are missing recognized text: In Acrobat, check the selected page range. With either route, inspect the output across the full document rather than assuming every page was processed successfully.

The selected text does not match the page: Compare the OCR layer with the page image and correct the text or rerun recognition with adjusted settings. OCR is not a guaranteed transcription.

The PDF is protected: Adobe says security restrictions may need to be removed before editing. Only modify the document if you are authorized to do so.

The PDF/A file is unexpectedly large or cannot be encrypted: Check whether PDF/A is actually required for your use case before choosing that output type.
What OCR can and cannot tell you
OCR is useful for making printed words in scanned page images findable and selectable, but the recognized text should not be treated as a perfect copy. Accuracy depends on the document and its settings; the reviewed official sources do not provide a controlled accuracy comparison between Acrobat and OCRmyPDF, or establish guarantees for handwriting, stamps, tables or poor-quality scans. For important material, inspect a representative set of pages and verify the text you plan to rely on.
