How to Normalize Podcast Audio Levels for a 24/7 YouTube Stream

A practical workflow for keeping podcast episodes consistent on a 24/7 YouTube stream—without confusing EBU loudness references with YouTube requirements.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a 24/7 YouTube podcast stream, normalize episodes before they enter the playlist whenever you can: measure each full episode’s integrated loudness, bring episodes toward one consistent editorial target, control true peaks, and audition episode transitions. A compressor or loudness controller running live can help with longer-term level changes, but it cannot anticipate the next sound and may alter the program’s dynamics.

There is no YouTube Live LUFS target in YouTube’s encoder guidance. The commonly cited −23 LUFS figure is an EBU broadcast reference, not a YouTube requirement. Choose a target for your actual distribution chain, then test the encoded stream on YouTube.

What to measure: loudness and peaks are different

Integrated loudness, measured in LUFS, helps compare how loud complete episodes sound over time. Peak measurements answer a different question: whether brief loud sounds approach or exceed digital clipping. A program can have a reasonable integrated reading and still contain excessive peaks, or have safe peaks while sounding much quieter than the next episode.

  • Integrated/programme loudness: use this to compare episodes and set a consistent overall level.
  • True peak: use this to check for peaks that may exceed the available digital headroom, including after encoding.
  • Clipping: keep the encoded output below 0 dBFS; clipping is distortion, not a loudness target.

OBS’s documented audio meter is not an integrated LUFS meter: its meter is a sample-peak programme meter, and its VU display is an RMS reading over 300 ms. Do not use either display as a substitute for measuring integrated loudness. OBS audio mixer guide

What LUFS target should you use?

Use a target that fits your editorial and distribution choices; no single figure guarantees the same listener experience across phones, televisions, computers, headphones, and listening environments. YouTube’s Live encoder instructions specify audio delivery settings and recommend testing and monitoring stream health, but do not specify a live loudness target. YouTube Live encoder settings

Reference What it says How to interpret it for this stream
EBU R 128 v5.0, November 2023 −23 LUFS average programme loudness; use Loudness Range and Maximum True Peak Level descriptors. A defensible broadcast-standard reference, not a YouTube-specific rule. EBU R 128
EBU R 128 S2 v3, November 2023 Its baseline approach recommends streaming unchanged at −23.0 LUFS. Where metadata is not used to manage device gain and the broadcaster wants to control dynamic treatment, it gives an interim distribution range of −20.0 to −16.0 LUFS. Context-dependent guidance, not a preset or universal target for YouTube podcasts. The supplement distinguishes playback contexts, including devices with limited gain/headroom or more background noise. EBU R 128 S2

Normalize episodes before streaming: the most controllable workflow

  1. Build a representative set. Include the quietest and loudest episodes, plus recurring intros, ads, music beds, and interstitials. Measure a whole program or a representative segment, not a short isolated phrase.
  2. Measure integrated loudness. Use an audio tool that reports integrated or programme loudness in LUFS. Record results consistently for each episode; peak-only meters cannot provide this measurement.
  3. Choose one editorial target. Base it on the material and distribution chain. If you use an EBU reference, retain its qualification: −23 LUFS is the EBU R 128 broadcast reference, while the −20 to −16 LUFS range in R 128 S2 applies to the stated interim distribution context.
  4. Apply gain to approach the target. Gain adjustment is often enough when episode levels are broadly consistent. Re-measure after changes.
  5. Use dynamics processing only where needed. Compression can manage large speech-level variations; limiting can control true peaks when gain changes reduce headroom. Avoid aggressive settings that make speech tiring, flatten meaningful emphasis, or cause audible artifacts.
  6. Check true peaks and clipping. Inspect the processed file’s peak behavior and ensure the encoded output stays below 0 dBFS. Do not infer true-peak safety from an integrated LUFS number.
  7. Audition real transitions. Listen from the end of one episode through the beginning of the next. Include silence, ads, music beds, and interstitials if they are part of the actual stream. A pair of individually acceptable readings can still make a jarring handoff.
  8. Test the delivery chain. Run the playlist through the live encoder and check the actual YouTube stream before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video activity similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Repeat the test after changing source gain, filters, playlist composition, or encoder settings.

When real-time loudness correction makes sense

A live controller is useful when episodes are assembled at broadcast time and cannot practically be prepared in advance. It can respond to longer-term level differences, but it cannot know what comes next. As a result, a controller may react to an expressive quiet passage or a sudden loud moment in a way that changes intended dynamics.

AES guidance describes a rolling analysis period between 30 seconds and two minutes for active real-time loudness controllers. This is contextual guidance, not a mandated setting; longer periods usually sound more natural and produce fewer audible artifacts. Listen for pumping, abrupt level changes, or flattened speech dynamics rather than assuming the controller’s target number guarantees a good result. AES Loudness Normalization resource

Choose between offline normalization and live correction by weighing consistency across full episodes and transitions, response to sudden changes, preservation of expressive speech, risk of pumping, ability to inspect peaks in advance, and the reliability of an unattended playlist. If you can prepare files, offline normalization gives you the chance to inspect and correct each episode before broadcast; real-time correction trades that control for less preparation.

YouTube audio delivery and stream checks

For delivery, follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions rather than confusing transport settings with loudness targets. The cited Live guidance specifies AAC or MP3, 44.1 kHz stereo, and 128 Kbps stereo audio. It also recommends testing audio similar to the planned stream and monitoring stream health. Those settings do not prescribe an LUFS level. YouTube Live encoder settings

Copyright and continuous-playlist checks

Level consistency does not grant permission to stream a podcast, music bed, advertisement, or inserted clip. Before scheduling a 24/7 playlist, confirm that you have the rights needed for the audio and video in every episode, including music and third-party segments. YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies are separate from audio-level standards; normalization does not prevent copyright claims or establish eligibility for monetization. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance and channel monetization policies.
