Raise remote or hybrid work before you accept, and make the request specific: name your preferred work location, office-day schedule, availability for extra attendance, and any practical fallback. Treat it as one part of the offer, alongside pay, benefits, travel, start date, and equipment support. An employer may agree, propose a compromise, or decline, so decide in advance which terms are essential to you.
Clarify what “remote” or “hybrid” means for this role
Do not rely on the label alone. Ask how the arrangement works for this team and location. Harvard’s career guidance recommends checking whether a job is remote or hybrid, how often office attendance is expected, and whether home-office setup assistance is offered: Harvard’s job-offer evaluation guide.

- How many office days are expected, and are they fixed or flexible?
- Which office is the assigned location, and are there restrictions on where you may work remotely?
- How much travel or additional in-person attendance may be required, and how much notice is typical?
- Are there different expectations during onboarding, team events, or client work?
- Is equipment or home-office support included?
These details make offers comparable and help prevent a mismatch between your understanding and the team’s expectations.

Decide what you need before you negotiate
Separate requirements from preferences. For example, a location constraint may be essential, while a particular office-day pattern may be negotiable. Consider what trade-offs could make the role workable, and connect your proposal to the work: deliverables, customer coverage, collaboration, availability, and any agreed travel.

Career guidance from the University of Texas at Austin recommends considering your priorities and circumstances, while Harvard advises weighing the offer against the role, field, location, and experience level. See UT Austin’s offer-negotiation guidance and Harvard’s evaluation guide.
Make a clear proposal before accepting
If remote work is a condition of taking the job, say so early in the offer conversation rather than waiting until after acceptance. If it is a preference, start by expressing enthusiasm, then explain the arrangement you are requesting and how you will meet the role’s needs. Penn and UT Austin career services treat location and remote or hybrid work as negotiable offer terms and recommend setting priorities and offering options when a preferred term is difficult to change: Penn’s negotiation guide and UT Austin’s guide.
A useful structure, which you should adapt to your circumstances, is: “I’m excited about the role. Before I accept, could we confirm the work arrangement? My preference is [specific arrangement]. I can be in the office [specific cadence] and will plan for [agreed meetings, onboarding, or other needs]. If that schedule is difficult, could we discuss [fallback]?”

Be concrete. “Hybrid” could mean several days at the office each week or occasional scheduled visits. State the pattern you mean, the location you would work from, and whether you can accommodate additional attendance with notice. If a trial period or later review would help, propose a timeframe and agree what will be reviewed.
Negotiate related offer terms together
Work location can affect travel, start date, equipment needs, and the overall value of an offer. Consider those terms together rather than making a series of disconnected requests. Penn’s guide recommends packaging requests, and UT Austin’s guidance likewise encourages candidates to rank priorities and raise related terms together.
For example, if regular travel to an office is possible but costly or disruptive, ask how often it would occur and whether the schedule or travel arrangements can be clarified alongside the work-location agreement. Avoid presenting a preference as an ultimatum unless it genuinely is a condition of accepting.

If the employer says no or cites policy
Ask what requirement the policy is intended to address. It may concern onboarding, client contact, security, team coordination, or a company-wide rule. Once you understand the reason, offer a narrower alternative that could address it:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Attend in person more often during an agreed onboarding period, then review the cadence.
- Cluster office days around meetings or team events.
- Use a different office or provide advance notice for occasional travel, if feasible.
- Agree on specific availability, deliverables, or collaboration practices to support remote work.
UT Austin advises making realistic requests and giving the employer options; Acas says employers should consider flexible options before a new employee starts. If no alternative meets a requirement that is essential for you, weigh the arrangement against the entire offer and your other options before accepting.
Get the arrangement confirmed in writing
Before accepting, check the offer letter and any policy or agreement it refers to. Ask for the agreed work location, office cadence, travel expectations, and any time-limited or reviewable arrangement to be recorded clearly. A verbal understanding may leave important details unsettled, and the effect of an offer letter or policy depends on the documents and applicable law.

In Great Britain, Acas says an agreed change to contract terms must be put in writing within one month. That is a jurisdiction-specific rule, not a universal deadline; it is still practical to seek written clarity before you accept. See Acas guidance on agreeing changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Compare offers on the arrangement, not just the label
If you are considering more than one offer, compare the terms that affect your actual working week. Harvard’s career guidance includes remote or hybrid status, office frequency, and home-office setup assistance among offer-evaluation factors.
| What to compare | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Office cadence | Number or pattern of in-person days, including onboarding and exceptions. |
| Predictability | Whether days are fixed, flexible, or scheduled with notice. |
| Work location | Permitted remote location and assigned office. |
| Travel | Expected frequency, purpose, and notice for additional attendance. |
| Home-office support | Whether setup assistance or equipment is included. |
| Stability | Whether terms are ongoing, subject to policy, or scheduled for review. |
Then weigh those practical terms alongside salary, benefits, role scope, growth opportunities, and personal fit rather than treating a “remote” label as a complete description.

Know that legal rights depend on where you work
Legal routes and timing vary by jurisdiction, employment status, and circumstances. In Great Britain, Acas says a person offered a job can discuss flexible arrangements before or after starting; the statutory right to make a flexible-working request starts on the first day of employment. Eligible employee requests must be handled reasonably and may be accepted, partly accepted, or refused for a genuine business reason. GOV.UK describes possible changes to hours, start or finish times, days, or location, and notes that Northern Ireland has different rules. Read Acas’s guidance and the GOV.UK flexible-working overview for the rules applicable there.
Australia has a different system. The Fair Work Ombudsman explains formal flexible-work requests for certain eligible employees as well as workplace rules that may apply to working from home: Fair Work Ombudsman: flexibility in the workplace. These UK and Australian examples do not establish rights in other countries. A disability-related need may also involve separate reasonable-adjustment duties; Acas distinguishes that from an ordinary flexible-working request. For an individual legal dispute, consult official guidance for your location or a qualified adviser.
