To transfer files over USB, connect your unlocked Galaxy phone or tablet to a computer, open the USB notification on the device, and select the file-transfer option. Depending on the model and software, it may be labeled Transferring files / Android Auto, Transferring files, or MTP. Tap Allow if the phone asks you to authorize the connection.
Change the USB connection to file transfer
- Unlock your Galaxy phone or tablet and connect it to the computer with a USB cable. Use a cable compatible with both devices.
- If the phone displays a permission prompt asking whether to allow the connection, tap Allow.
- Swipe down from the top of the Galaxy screen to open the Quick panel or notification shade. Tap the USB charging notification. On One UI 8.0, Samsung labels it USB for charging phone.
- Select Transferring files / Android Auto, Transferring files, or MTP, whichever file-transfer option appears on your device. Samsung’s One UI 8.0 instructions specify Transferring files / Android Auto.
- On Windows, open File Explorer and select the Galaxy device. You can then browse and copy files between the computer and phone.
Samsung’s labels and available options can differ by software version, region, and device model. The key is to select a file-transfer mode from the USB notification; charging by itself does not make the phone’s files available to the computer. If the Galaxy only charges
Check the selected USB mode
Open the USB charging notification and choose a file-transfer option. Samsung says Galaxy devices running One UI 8.0 or later default to Charging phone only, so you may need to change the mode each time you connect.
Unlock and approve the phone
Keep the phone unlocked while connecting. If it asks you to allow access or authorize the computer, tap Allow. If no notification appears, disconnect and reconnect the phone, then check the notification shade again.

Try a data-capable cable and another port
Some USB cables are designed only for charging and cannot transfer files. Try another compatible cable and a different USB port. If possible, test the phone with another computer or connect another device to the original computer to help identify which connection is failing. Android’s file-transfer help also recommends checking the cable when a device charges but does not transfer data.
Restart and check the connection
If the correct mode is selected and a known data-capable cable still does not work, restart both devices and reconnect. Samsung also recommends checking that the chosen USB function is supported by the connected devices; see its Galaxy connection options guide.

Windows file-browsing limits to know
Samsung describes a specific File Explorer drag-and-drop workflow with limits: it supports moving up to 100 files at a time, does not support moving entire folders, and does not allow a single file larger than 512 MB through that workflow. These limits apply to Samsung’s described Windows method, not necessarily to other operating systems or transfer methods. Details are in Samsung’s Windows sharing instructions.

USB file browsing is different from moving to a new phone
For browsing or copying files between a Galaxy device and a computer, use the USB file-transfer mode and the computer’s file browser; Smart Switch and a USB OTG adapter are not required. For moving content from one phone to another, Samsung offers Smart Switch, which can transfer over cable or wirelessly. Samsung says most wired phone-to-phone Smart Switch connections require a USB OTG adapter. See Samsung’s file-transfer guide and Smart Switch connection guidance.
