Use a consistent, zero-padded number at the start of each filename—for example, 01 - Topic - Part 1.mp4, 02 - Topic - Part 2.mp4. That keeps files in a predictable order on your computer. After uploading, set the playback sequence in YouTube itself: filenames are not a documented way to control playlist order.
Choose a filename format that sorts cleanly
Decide the sequence first, then use one numbering scheme for every file in the series. Put the number at the beginning, followed by a useful description:

Use the same number of digits throughout. For a series with ten or more videos, 01, 02, … 10 sorts more predictably in common file views than 1, 2, … 10. Zero padding is a practical file-organization convention, not a YouTube requirement.

If viewers need to know an episode’s place in the series, also include its part number in the public video title; a local filename and a published title serve different purposes.

Set the actual order in YouTube
Once the videos are uploaded and added to a playlist, arrange the playlist itself. YouTube’s desktop help says playlist items can be reordered by dragging them up or down. YouTube Studio’s computer instructions give this editing route:
- In YouTube Studio, open Content, then select Playlists.
- Find the playlist and choose Edit on YouTube.
- Drag the videos into the intended sequence.
- Save the changes.
YouTube’s playlist creation flow also lets you enter a title and description, set visibility, choose how videos are arranged, and add videos. For the final intended sequence, check the playlist after arranging it and confirm the items appear in the order you expect.

The official help pages describe playlist ordering controls; they do not establish that a local filename determines playback order. Treat numbering as a way to organize files, and use YouTube’s playlist editor to set the sequence viewers will see.

YouTube’s desktop playlist help says drag reordering is unavailable for playlists containing only YouTube Shorts. If the playlist consists entirely of Shorts, the documented drag-and-drop method may not be available.
