To mute a player for everyone on a Rust server, connect with an RCON client and run mute "player_name_or_steam_id". Restore chat with unmute "player_name_or_steam_id". These native commands affect text and voice chat when used with administrator authority; they are not supported in Rust’s in-game F1 console.

What Rust’s native mute command does
Rust has native mute, unmute and mutelist commands. The target can be a player name or a Steam64 (SteamID64) identifier. The result depends on the authority of the person executing the command:

Shockbyte’s October 27, 2024 administrator guidance says native mute and unmute commands do not work in the in-game console. BisectHosting’s March 10, 2026 documentation also directs administrators to RCON. If the goal is to silence someone for the whole server, administrator authority and an RCON execution path are therefore essential.
Before you mute anyone
Confirm administrator authority
A server-wide mute requires the permissions associated with server administration. If you execute the command without admin authority, the official Rust Wiki says the mute is local rather than global. That difference explains why another player may still see or hear the supposedly muted person.

Prepare an RCON connection
Use the RCON client supplied by your hosting control panel or your server-management setup. Authenticate to the correct server, then send the command in the RCON command field. The exact screen names differ between RCON applications, but the command text is the same.
Choose a stable identifier
A player name is convenient, but names can contain spaces, change, or be shared by more than one person. The documented syntax accepts a Steam64 ID, so use that identifier when a name is ambiguous or the player is changing names. Put a name in quotation marks, especially when it contains spaces.

- Open your RCON client and connect to the Rust server on which you have administrator permissions.
- In the command input, enter
mute "player_name_or_steam_id". Replace the example value with the player’s current name or Steam64 ID. - Submit the command. On an administrator connection, the native mute applies server-wide and blocks the target’s text and voice chat according to the behavior documented by Shockbyte and Corrosion Hour.
- Record which identifier you used and the moderation reason in your normal staff log. This prevents confusion if the player changes names or another administrator later needs to reverse the action.
For a player named Red Builder, the command would be mute "Red Builder". If you know the player’s Steam64 ID, use that instead: mute "7656119XXXXXXXXXX", replacing the example with the complete ID. Do not treat the example ID as a real account identifier.
How to unmute a player
Unmute by name or Steam64 ID
- Reconnect to the same server with an administrator-enabled RCON account.
- Run
unmute "player_name_or_steam_id", replacing the value with the name or Steam64 ID used for the mute. - Have the player send a text message and use voice chat, if appropriate, to verify that access has been restored.
Using the Steam64 ID is safer when the player has changed names. If you muted by name and that name now identifies a different player, identify the original account before issuing an unmute.

Use the mute list when an index is returned
The official Rust Wiki lists mutelist for checking locally muted players. It returns the local mute entries and provides indexes that can be used with unmute. This is useful when you are managing your own local mute list and need to identify an entry by its displayed index. A local list does not, by itself, prove that a player has a server-wide administrative mute.

Command spelling matters. Use the native command names exactly as shown, and keep quotation marks around names containing spaces. If your server uses a moderation plugin, its command names and target format may supersede these native commands.

“Unknown command” or no effect in the F1 console
The most common cause is using Rust’s in-game F1 console. Current hosting documentation from Shockbyte and BisectHosting identifies mute and unmute as commands that do not work there. Close the F1 console and send the command through an authenticated RCON client instead.
The player name is rejected
Names are not always reliable identifiers. A name may have changed, include spaces or punctuation, or match more than one visible entry. Run the command with the player’s Steam64 ID, which is accepted by the documented native syntax. If you do not have the correct ID, stop rather than muting a similarly named account.

Only you can no longer hear or read the player
This indicates a local mute, normally caused by running the command without administrator authority or using a client-side mute feature. The Facepunch Rust Wiki distinguishes local non-admin muting from global administrative muting. Confirm that the RCON account is actually authorized on the server and that you connected to the intended instance.
Text is blocked but voice is not, or vice versa
Native administrative mute is documented as covering both text and voice chat. If only one channel changes, check whether a plugin is intercepting moderation commands or whether a separate voice-moderation system is active. Plugin behavior is not guaranteed to match the native command.

Check the target server, the RCON account’s permissions and the server’s installed plugins. A command sent to a staging server, a different shard or an outdated RCON connection will not affect the player on the server you intended to moderate. Plugin compatibility can also vary with the current Rust server build; consult the plugin’s documentation and permissions before combining it with native commands.
The player reconnects and the mute seems gone
The cited native command references establish how to issue mutes and unmute them, but they do not specify a universal persistence policy across server builds or plugins. If a mute must survive reconnects or restarts, verify that behavior in your server’s current build and any moderation plugin documentation rather than assuming persistence.

Native commands versus moderation plugins
Plugins are permitted on community servers, and they can add moderation workflows that differ from Rust’s built-in commands. Compare the implementation on your server across these points before choosing a command:

For example, the uMod Voice Mute documentation uses /voice unmute <name or id> to restore voice access. That syntax is not interchangeable with native unmute. If a plugin is installed, read its command and permission documentation first, and use the plugin’s own mute command for actions it controls.
A dependable moderation workflow
Identify the account
Use the player’s Steam64 ID whenever possible. Keep the name and ID together in staff notes so a later unmute cannot be applied to the wrong person.
Use the correct authority and interface
For a server-wide action, connect through RCON with an administrator account. Do not test the command in F1 and conclude that native moderation is unavailable.
Apply the smallest effective action
If the issue is voice harassment, determine whether your installed moderation system supports a voice-only action. Native administrative mute is documented as covering both text and voice, so it may be broader than a plugin’s voice-specific command.

Check the command response in RCON, then confirm with another staff account or an affected player when practical. A local mute can look successful from the issuer’s perspective while leaving the rest of the server unaffected.
Reverse the action deliberately
When the sanction ends, run the matching unmute command through the same authority path. If the player was handled by a plugin, use that plugin’s unmute syntax instead of mixing command systems.
