You can broadcast one live production to Instagram Live and YouTube by sending it through a hosted multistream relay such as Restream, then completing the Instagram launch in Instagram Live Producer. The key distinction: starting your encoder sends the feed, but it does not start the Instagram broadcast—you must wait for the preview and click Go Live in Instagram.

Choose how to send one production to both platforms
Hosted relay: the simplest route
A multistream service receives one feed from OBS or other streaming software and routes it to the destinations you connect. Restream documents connecting Instagram Live with a stream key and connecting YouTube through account authorization. This keeps the destination setup in one place and avoids configuring separate software outputs. Check the service’s current plan and destination support before relying on it.

Direct multi-output from OBS: an advanced alternative
OBS’s compatibility page lists a Multiple RTMP Outputs plugin for the OBS Studio 28 Windows and macOS variants covered by that page. It was published August 31, 2022; it is not a current installation or support guide. Confirm compatibility with your installed OBS version and plugin before using this approach. Check eligibility and prepare both accounts
Instagram Live Producer
Restream’s April 22, 2026 guide says its workflow requires a Professional Instagram account and that public accounts with at least 1,000 followers can go live. It also states that Instagram Live is limited to one hour. These are Restream’s published instructions, not independently verified Meta policy; account access and feature availability may vary. Confirm Live Producer and the stream-key option are present in your account before planning the event.

- Use Instagram on a desktop browser and confirm you can open Live Producer.
- Plan to generate a fresh stream key for each broadcast; Restream says the key must be refreshed every time.
- Keep the Instagram Live Video tab open during the stream.
YouTube live streaming
Restream’s July 9, 2026 guide says YouTube live streaming must be enabled before connecting. For a channel’s first stream, it describes phone verification followed by a 24-hour wait. It also says the connected account must be the channel owner, not a manager or editor. YouTube has no stream-duration limit in that guide, but it says only streams under 12 hours are archived. - Open Instagram Live Producer on desktop. In Instagram, choose Create, then Live video. Set the title and audience, then copy the stream key shown for this broadcast.
- Add Instagram to the relay. In Restream, add Instagram as a destination and paste the current stream key. Leave Instagram’s Live Video tab open.
- Connect YouTube. Add the YouTube channel through account authorization and confirm you are using the channel owner’s account.
- Prepare the encoder. In OBS or compatible streaming software, select the relay as the destination and configure the production for both platforms. Use the relay’s current connection instructions; do not reuse an old Instagram key.
- Start sending the feed. Start streaming in the encoder. Wait for the preview to appear in Instagram Live Producer; at this point the feed is arriving, but Instagram is not yet live.
- Start Instagram Live. Click Go Live in Instagram Live Producer. Confirm the YouTube destination is also receiving the feed and live as expected.
- End in the right order. End the broadcast in Instagram first, then stop the encoder or relay. Restream warns that ending only in the encoder or Restream can leave the Instagram video frozen for four minutes.
Choose settings that work for both destinations
Instagram’s vertical-oriented recommendations and YouTube’s broader encoder guidance do not translate to one universal best setting. Decide whether the production should prioritize a full-screen vertical Instagram frame or a layout that remains readable on both services. The cited guidance does not establish an automatic per-destination reframing workflow, so do not assume one will be applied.

These figures come from Restream’s streaming software settings guidance; use them as Instagram-oriented guidance rather than a universal setting for the combined stream.
YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s official encoder guidance covers H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. The recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and delivery conditions, so choose a value for the actual output rather than treating Instagram’s range as the YouTube optimum. Only use video, music, images, and other material you have rights to stream, or that you are otherwise legally entitled to use. A live broadcast can be interrupted or restricted when rights holders or platform systems identify material. Check each platform’s current rules and any rights conditions attached to licensed content before the event. For YouTube, also consider whether the channel’s overall content complies with its monetization and reused-content rules; a technically successful multistream does not establish policy eligibility.

Troubleshoot common launch problems
- No Instagram stream-key option: Confirm Live Producer is available to the account, and check the account type and eligibility described in Restream’s instructions. If it is unavailable, do not schedule around a workflow you cannot access.
- Instagram shows no preview: Confirm the encoder is actively sending to the relay, the current Instagram key was pasted correctly, and the Live Video tab remains open. Refresh the key for a new broadcast.
- Preview appears but Instagram is not live: Click Go Live in Instagram Live Producer; encoder output alone does not complete the Instagram launch.
- YouTube cannot be connected or started: Check that live streaming is enabled, that any first-time verification and wait are complete, and that the authorized account is the channel owner.
- One destination looks poorly framed: Revisit the shared composition. Instagram’s 9:16 recommendation may crop or make a landscape layout difficult to read; redesign key text and subjects to remain legible instead of assuming the relay will reframe automatically.
- Instagram freezes at the end: End the live in Instagram before stopping the encoder or relay.
